Commonwealth University faculty, coaches, to take no-confidence vote on university president

Yahoo30-01-2025

MANSFIELD, Pa. (WETM) — Faculty and coaches from three campuses of Commonwealth University will vote anonymously in February to give their voice in suggesting if the current president step down or stay, according to information from the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties.
The no-confidence vote on Commonwealth University President Bashar Hanna will be done on Feb. 11 and 12 electronically and anonymously, the APSCUF said.
The vote is months of APSCUF efforts to convince authorities to do what is in the best interest of the university and its students, with all three campuses announcing plans in December to hold the vote.
Community Climbing Day to be held at CU-Mansfield
The results of the vote will be announced later that week. If passed, the vote could lead to the termination of Hanna's presidency at the university.
Hanna has been under scrutiny for months about his leadership of the university with APSCUF President, Kenneth M. Mash stating in a November release the university saw drops in enrollment, hiring issues, major technical issues, and much more.
Hanna has been found liable for the wrongful termination of a dean who was a mandated reporter and remained in power as the final say in sexual harassment cases and other disciplinary cases, according to Mash. The case stems from when Hanna fired the dean after they reported Hanna for suspected harassment against a university employee, Mash said in a statement.
Hanna was President of Bloomsburg University from 2017 until 2021 when he became interim President of Mansfield University until the merger of Mansfield, Bloomsburg, and Lock Haven universities became Commonwealth University.

'Red stop' 24-hour crackdown: Israel police arrest nine suspects, seize weapons, vehicles

Israel Police, in a joint 24-hour crackdown with IDF and Border Police, arrested nine suspects in the West Bank for serious crimes, seizing weapons and stolen vehicles. Israel Police officers in the West Bank arrested nine suspects during a 24-hour crackdown in an operation titled "Red Stop," which targeted weapons, ammunition, stolen vehicles, and suspects involved in serious crimes, the police announced Wednesday. The operation, which District Commander Commissioner Moshe Pinchi led, was carried out in collaboration with IDF forces and Border Police units across several areas in the West Bank. According to police, the coordinated effort yielded significant results in combating crime and strengthening governance. In Hebron, local officers, together with Yehuda Brigade troops, seized a 9mm handgun, 50 bullets, a hunting rifle, and six shotgun shells during a search guided by station intelligence. Two Hebron residents were arrested and taken in for questioning. In Beit Awwa, near Hebron, an offensive operation led by the Yehuda Special Patrol Unit and detectives from the Yehuda subdistrict crime-fighting unit, with IDF forces, resulted in the discovery of a Carlo-type submachine gun and a matching magazine. A local resident was arrested and taken for further investigation. In the village of Kabalan, near Nablus, a combined intelligence and detective operation by the Ariel station and IDF forces from the Shomron Brigade led to the arrest of four suspects believed to be part of a vehicle-theft ring. Police seized a stolen 2023 vehicle, a 'Mash-tova' vehicle, break-in tools, and a tow cable. The suspects were transferred to the Ariel station for further questioning. Modi'in Illit station police officers located a stolen vehicle from the Holon area near the entrance to Rantis. A suspect from Kabatiya was arrested and transferred to the Holon station in the Tel Aviv district for investigation. In Hebron, Border Police tactical units, along with Shahar Battalion forces from the Yehuda Brigade and Hebron station officers, arrested a suspect considered a main target for property crimes and vehicle theft. The suspect, a resident of Idhna, was taken to the Border Police's southern district Yamar unit and Kiryat Malachi station for further questioning. Elsewhere, police officers conducted a large-scale traffic operation, including six license suspensions, 10 vehicle seizures, and 16 citations for weight violations. A truck found with a 62% overload was seized, the driver's license was revoked, and a criminal case was opened. Another driver was found driving while disqualified — for the second time — with additional violations, and was sent to Ofer Prison. The West Bank District Police said they would continue to act decisively, in cooperation with all security branches, to fight serious crime, seize weapons, and enhance the sense of security for residents of the region.

Walnut Hill Study Exposes Systemic Medicare Advantage Barriers Causing Delays, Denials, and Patient Abandonment

DALLAS, June 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Walnut Hill Medical has released findings from its MAD (Medicare Advantage Denial) Study, revealing that Medicare Advantage plans are systematically delaying or denying access to a non-opioid, non-steroidal chronic pain treatment: Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS). Based on a proprietary dataset of 1,210 Medicare Advantage patients who sought prior authorization for PNS in 2024, the study paints a troubling picture—raising urgent concerns about transparency, equity, and access in America's most popular form of Medicare coverage. "Prior authorization isn't just a bureaucratic hurdle—it's being weaponized to deter care," said Chris Hanna, CEO of Walnut Hill Medical. "Transparency is the first step toward accountability." Understanding the Issue: What Is Medicare Advantage and Prior Authorization? Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) is a private alternative to traditional Medicare, now covering over half of all Medicare beneficiaries. These plans are managed by private insurers and often tout extra benefits—but they also impose stricter controls, including prior authorization (PA) requirements for many medical services. Prior authorization requires providers to obtain insurer approval before delivering care. While designed to ensure medical necessity and control costs, PA can also result in significant care delays—or outright denials. The 2022 Warning That Went Unheeded In 2022, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) found that 13% of denied services in Medicare Advantage met Medicare coverage criteria and should have been approved. The OIG warned that plans may be inappropriately restricting access to necessary care. Walnut Hill's 2024 data show the problem is even worse—especially for patients seeking advanced therapies like PNS. Key Findings: Denials, Drop-Off, and Delays in Pain Treatment Access PNS is a minimally invasive, FDA-cleared therapy for chronic pain. Walnut Hill's study found: 29% of patients were denied on their first prior authorization attempt—more than twice the OIG's 2022 benchmark. 28% of patients abandoned care after an initial denial—never appealing or resubmitting. Among those who appealed: 56% had their denial overturned. 69% who escalated to a Medicare hearing (OMHA) were approved. "This isn't just inefficiency," Hanna said. "It's a sorting mechanism that weeds out patients without time, resources, or strong clinical advocates." The Cost of Denial: Financial Incentives and Patient Harm Of the 1,210 patients studied, 210 were denied and never received their PNS therapy. Based on 2024 Medicare Advantage reimbursement rates, Medicare Advantage plans withheld $6.2 million worth of care from patients—highlighting how administrative attrition reduces cost at the patient's expense. A Call for Oversight and Reform "Medicare Advantage now covers the majority of eligible seniors," said Hanna. "With that dominance must come responsibility. Our data show that without reform, prior authorization becomes a silent gatekeeper—not just delaying care but denying it altogether." Walnut Hill is urging lawmakers to strengthen transparency and accountability provisions in the bipartisan Improving Seniors' Timely Access to Care Act of 2025, introduced by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA). Loretta Swit, M*A*S*H Star, Dies at 87

Loretta Swit, beloved for her groundbreaking role as Major Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan on M*A*S*H, died on May 30, 2025. She was 87. Swit's portrayal of Major Houlihan helped transform the character from a punchline to a powerful presence—one of the first truly complex female figures in primetime comedy. Over the show's 11-season run, Swit was nominated for an Emmy every season, winning twice, in 1980 and 1982. Her passing drew heartfelt tributes from fans and longtime co-stars Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, and Jamie Farr, as well as from PETA, where she was a passionate advocate for animal rights. Jamie Farr said in a statement released to USA Today: 'I dearly loved Loretta! As close as family can get… I can't begin to express how much she will be missed.' According to PETA's website, Swit 'worked with many animal charities and had her own called 'SwitHeart Animal Alliance.' This charity works to bring back dogs from Afghanistan to reunite them with their human companions and matches veterans with homeless animals.' They also ask that those who can would adopt a new friend from a shelter in her memory. Behind the scenes, Swit was a vocal advocate for gender equity, pushing for deeper storylines for women both in the writers' room and onscreen. Standing up to a male-dominated industry can be lonely. In one memorable scene, Major Houlihan finally expresses her loneliness and need for someone on her side, but Swit is clearly speaking from her own heart. ☕️ #ClassicMASH #MASH #mash4077 #war #majormargarethoulihan #margarethoulihan #hotlips #lorettaswit #coffee " class="tiktok-embed" data-video-id="7251202849466535211"> Though set during the Korean War, M*A*S*H spoke to a generation grappling with Vietnam, Watergate, and shifting social norms. The show's mix of humor and heartbreak helped audiences process the real costs of war and still does. It continues to air in reruns, especially around Memorial Day and Veterans Day, reminding viewers that behind every uniform is a human story. Swit's legacy lives on in those stories and in the countless lives she touched, both on and off screen.
