Attacker who killed a London schoolboy with a samurai sword is convicted of murder

Associated Press6 hours ago

LONDON (AP) — A man armed with a samurai sword who killed a teenager on his way to school and injured five other people during a 20-minute rampage in London in 2024 was convicted of murder on Wednesday.
A jury at London's Central Criminal Court found Marcus Arduini Monzo guilty of murdering 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, along with counts of attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary, and possessing a bladed article.
The 37-year-old had admitted to carrying two samurai swords but denied all other charges.
Monzo, who has dual Spanish and Brazilian citizenship, killed Anjorin during an attack in April last year in the Hainault area of east London that began when he struck a pedestrian with his van. He told the victim he was going to kill him and slashed the man's neck. The wounded man was able to get away and survived.
Monzo then ambushed Anjorin, who was wearing headphones, and did not hear a neighbor yelling to warn him. He went on to attack several other people, including two police officers.

1 dead, 1 injured in San Jose stabbing; suspect arrested

One person was stabbed to death and another was injured following a confrontation in San Jose on Tuesday, and a suspect was arrested, authorities said. The San Jose Police Department said in a press release Wednesday that the incident happened on Alvernaz Drive in Ramblewood/Tuers neighborhood of South San Jose, just west of U.S. Highway 101 and south of E. Capitol Expressway. Officers responded at about 10 p.m. to a report of a stabbing at a home and arrived to find two men who had each been stabbed at least once, police said. Officers were also informed that the suspect was still inside the home, and he was taken into custody without further incident, police said. One of the victims was unresponsive and not breathing, and officers began emergency first aid while medics were called. Despite the life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said. The second victim had injuries that were not life-threatening. According to homicide investigators, all three of the people involved knew each other and had been engaged in a verbal dispute just before the stabbing. The motive and full circumstances remained under investigation, police said. The suspect was identified as 44-year-old San Jose resident Buu Trinh. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder. The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office. Police said it was the city's 12th homicide of 2025. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Detective Sergeant Van Den Broeck #3829 and Detective Estantino #4339 of the San José Police Department's Homicide Unit at 3829@ and/or 4339@ or at 408-277-5283.

How to Steal a House

Businessweek Finance When Arash Missaghi was murdered in suburban Toronto last year, his killer accused him of swiping properties and ruining his investors' lives. By Handguns and assault rifles aren't easy to get in Canada. So when Alan Kats decided to kill two people, he went to the local Bass Pro shop to examine its selection of hunting firearms. He settled on a Winchester SXP Defender shotgun, designed for speedy pump action between shots, and bought four boxes of ammunition meant to stop large game. On a warm June afternoon, he found the people he was looking for at a sparsely populated office building in the Toronto suburb of North York. Shepherding both into the building's marble lobby, he fired a shot to let them know he was serious, then demanded the return of the C$1.28 million ($936,000) he and his wife had given them.

British Man Is Charged in Attempted Mock Wedding With 9-Year-Old at Disneyland Paris

A convicted sex offender from Britain has been detained in France after he was accused of attempting to stage a mock wedding with a 9-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris that involved scores of unwitting paid actors. The event was held early on Saturday, before the amusement park opened to the public, but was quickly cut short when staff at the park realized that the 'bride' was a minor. Jean-Baptiste Bladier, a prosecutor in Meaux, a French city just northeast of Disneyland Paris, said in a statement that the police were called to the scene and determined that the wedding was 'a fictitious ceremony intended to be filmed privately' with fake guests. The episode has raised questions about how a registered sex offender was able to book a private event involving a minor at one of the world's most prominent theme parks. The main suspect, a 39-year-old British citizen, used a stolen Latvian identity and fake documents to book the event, the police said. Mr. Bladier did not name the man but said he was 'professionally made-up to show a face totally different from his own.' Mr. Bladier said the man had been charged with fraud, identity theft and money laundering. He was also named as an assisted witness — a step short of being formally charged — in an investigation into the potential corruption of a minor. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
