Bangladesh and Kazakhstan have been drafted into the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament, replacing Pakistan and Oman, as per the schedule released on Tuesday. The tournament will take place in Rajgir, Bihar, from August 29 to September 7.
India, the host nation, finds itself in Pool A alongside China, Japan, and Kazakhstan. Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Bangladesh.
The opening match on August 29 will see Malaysia face Bangladesh, while India will take on China in the final fixture of the day. The final, third-place play-off, and classification matches are scheduled for September 7.
Why Pakistan pulled out?
While the Indian government had assured visas for Pakistani players, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel, citing security concerns. The organisers, anticipating the uncertainty, had already approached Bangladesh to step in and complete the eight-team field.
The bigger picture: Tensions beyond sport
Pakistan's absence is significant as the Asia Cup also serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup. The refusal comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed.
India launched Operation Sindoor to dismantle terror infrastructure across the border, further straining bilateral sporting relations. Pakistan's withdrawal underscores how regional conflicts continue to spill into the sporting arena, impacting athletes and international competitions.
India's challenge ahead
For India, the tournament represents not just an opportunity to dominate on home soil but also a chance to seal an early qualification for the World Cup. Drawn with familiar rivals Japan and China, India will be expected to top Pool A, but the inclusion of Kazakhstan adds a new dynamic to the group stage.

If the first half of the year was dedicated to question marks over the Test captaincy for India's men's national team, the second half has begun with questions regarding captaincy in ODI cricket. With rumours swirling regarding the oncoming retirement of incumbent ODI captain Rohit Sharma, a fair few names have been thrown around as candidates for limited-overs leadership in recent days. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have developed into central members of India's ODI team.(PTI) High amongst those is Shreyas Iyer, whose stock as a captain in white-ball cricket is at an all-time high after reaching two consecutive IPL finals with two different franchises. Iyer's mixture of experience, leadership, and x-factor has made him a sudden crowd favourite to take over the captaincy mantle from Rohit, as and when Team India reaches that bridge. Recent reports suggested Iyer will be the frontrunner, but those calls might have been nipped in the bud early. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia denied all claims of discussions to replace Rohit having taken place. In an exclusive comment to Hindustan Times, Saikia stated: 'That's news to me. There have been no such discussions.' Rohit is certainly in the twilight of his career at age 38, having retired from T20I and Test cricket already. However, ODI cricket remains arguably his strongest format, where he has provided no indication thus far of hanging up his gloves. Nonetheless, tough questions must be asked regarding whether or not Rohit will be in the picture when the 2027 ODI World Cup rolls around, at which point he will have reached his 40th birthday, while someone like Iyer would be at the peak of their strength and with a decade of international experience holding him up to boot. 'No way' Shubman Gill shouldn't be ODI captian': BCCI official While Iyer is a fixture in the Indian ODI team after a pair of sensational tournament performances in the World Cup and Champions Trophy, he may still not be the frontrunner for the captaincy position. Shubman Gill remains a premier ODI opening batter for his team, and given his fast-track to leadership positions within the IPL and for the Indian Test team, might have pipped Iyer to being Rohit's natural successor. Given that the BCCI also enjoys relative continuity between teams in terms of leadership, Gill is being touted as the heir apparent by officials within the cricket board. A source stated to Hindustan Times that the current Indian Test captain would be the natural choice for the ODI captaincy as well. 'He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes,' stated the source. While Iyer has his supporters given his quality and his pedigree as a long-time captain in the IPL, India are clearly looking to groom Gill as the long-term leader for the team, at almost 5 years Iyer's junior. Gill's success leading in the IPL and a successful first series on the tour of England also play in his favour: while he might be a work-in-progress for another year or two, there have been no red flags to sway the BCCI away from handing him the reins of India's future, in terms of leadership or his primary skill of batting. Whichever player is chosen will have to wait, with Rohit holding on to captaincy as India head to Australia for a three-match series this October.

Pakistan seniors reportedly left shocked, feel disrespected after PCB removes Category A from contracts list
Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were the only players included in Category A, the top bracket of the Pakistan Cricket Board's contracts list last year. The two seniors, however, have been demoted to Category B this year, with the Mohsin Naqvi-led board removing the top category entirely. In addition to their demotion in the PCB contracts list, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have also been overlooked for the upcoming Asia Cup. Reuters Senior members of the Pakistan cricket team have reportedly expressed shock at the removal of Category A from the central contracts list by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from 1 July this year. While the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB has increased the number of contracted player to 30 from 27 in the previous year's list, which includes 12 new additions, the fact that they have decided to get rid of the top bracket altogether has raised eyebrows. A player can play for Pakistan without a central contract. The players, additionally were made aware of the development on Monday by an official from the board, but were not offered an explanation for the PCB's decision to remove the top bracket entirely. Additionally, there also have been speculations of some players getting promoted or included in the contracts list under the influence of selector and former head coach Aqib Javed as well as current white-ball coach Mike Hesson. The board, however, firmly denies reports of favouritism, with sources claiming that '100% merit was followed, and as players' performances improve, their contract categories will also improve accordingly.' The Pakistan cricket team also finds itself facing heavy criticism after suffering a first ODI series defeat at the hands of West Indies in 34 years with a 202-run thrashing last week. Their inconsistency across formats has led to concerns over their performance at next month's Asia Cup in the UAE, where they have been grouped alongside arch-rivals India.
