Two shot at in Hazaribagh days after Rs 5 lakh extortion demand
Hazaribagh: In a chilling incident in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district, two youths were shot at in broad daylight on Wednesday in the Keredari police station area, police officials said.
The attack occurred barely a week after they were allegedly threatened with an extortion demand of Rs 5 lakh.
The victims, identified as Phooleshwar Bedia and Baiju Bedia, both residents of Lurunga village in Barkagaon block, have been admitted to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital in Hazaribagh.
Phooleshwar, who sustained a bullet injury in the chest, is reported to be in critical condition.
According to police, the two run a pig farm in their village and were returning by auto after collecting leftover food from the mess of the BGR Mining Company in Barkagaon.
Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, six armed assailants on three motorcycles intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on them.
Baiju, who survived the attack, told police that about a week ago, a group of youths had demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion. Since both victims are involved in small-scale farming, they had dismissed it as a prank. However, Wednesday's attack confirmed their worst fears.
After the shooting, local residents rushed the injured to the Community Health Centre in Keredari, from where they were referred to the Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Police from the Keredari station reached the spot soon after the incident and launched an investigation. No arrests have been made so far.
Earlier on Sunday, criminals opened fire -- reportedly 6 to 7 rounds -- at a jewellery shop in Hazaribagh city.
A day later, in Jorakat village of Barkagaon block, miscreants torched seven vehicles, including a JCB and a truck engaged in road construction work. Labourers at the site were also assaulted.
Interestingly, the shooting took place on a day when traders in Hazaribagh had shut down their businesses to protest the rising crime in the district.

7,799 train passengers fined for ticketless travel in Sonepur division
Patna: Sonepur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) has recorded a collection of Rs 59,04,320 as fine and arrested 7,799 passengers for ticketless travel in a single day operation conducted on June 23, said Sonepur divisional railway manager, (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood. According to Sood, each travelling ticket examiner (TTE) in the Sonepur division achieved an exceptional daily average earning of Rs 8,137, surpassing the ECR's average of Rs 6,911 per TTE. This impressive performance marks a significant leap in both operational efficiency and revenue generation for the division, he said. Sonepur senior divisional commercial manager (senior DCM) Raushan Kumar on Wednesday told this newspaper that the large-scale drive targeted unauthorised travel on mail and express trains with a special focus on reserved coaches. "The action not only contributed to cleaner and more orderly passenger services, but also offered much needed relief to the genuine passengers in peak summer," he said, adding a positive outcome of the operation was a 15% rise in sale of unreserved tickets across the division. "Coordinated effort reflected our commitment to enhancing passenger experience while safeguarding railway revenue. The response from passengers has been largely supportive and we will continue such drives to maintain discipline and fairness in the system," Kumar said.

Four murders in 8 months: Romil Vohra, a sharpshooter of Rana brothers' gang
Romil Vohra, the 21-year-old sharpshooter who was gunned down in an encounter in South Delhi on Tuesday, had been giving sleepless nights to the Haryana Police for over a year. He was booked in nine criminal cases – seven registered in Haryana, and one each in Punjab and Delhi – related to murder, extortion, and shootings, police records showed. According to the police, Romil was a sharpshooter in the Kala and Noni Rana brothers' gang, notorious for allegedly targeting liquor barons and other businessmen in Yamunanagar and nearby areas in Haryana for extortion. Romil, who had a reward of Rs 3.10 lakh on his head – announced by the Haryana government – sustained multiple gunshot injuries during a joint operation by the Delhi Police Special Cell and the Haryana Police's Special Task Force at Kishan Garh on Tuesday morning. Police said he was travelling on a motorcycle when police teams intercepted him. He allegedly opened fire and was subsequently shot in retaliation. He later succumbed to his injuries. Police have claimed to have recovered a foreign-manufactured pistol from his possession. Parents in jail According to the police, Romil's parents are both currently in jail. His father Kapil Vohra is allegedly involved in the illegal liquor trade in Haryana. 'Kapil and Romil's mother Risha Vohra are currently lodged in a Haryana jail in connection with illegal supply of liquor and cases of conspiracy. Both were arrested by Yamunanagar Police in March,' said an officer. The officer further said that the local administration had recently issued demolition notices for the family's two-storey house located at Ashok Vihar in Yamunanagar. Only child, short temper Another police officer said that Romil had been involved in petty fights since his school days. After completing Class 12, he enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce programme at a college in Yamunanagar. During this time, he allegedly came into contact with Noni Rana, who is suspected to be based in Canada currently. Noni and Romil stayed in touch, another officer said. 'Since Romil was already involved in petty crimes, Noni asked him to work for him in October 2024. He then decided to join the Rana brothers' gang, which was initially led by Kala Rana, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail,' the officer said. The officer further said that Noni exploited Romil's short temper to execute his plans. 'At Noni's behest, Romil committed four murders and carried out two firings in Haryana and Punjab within eight months.' According to the police, the Rana brother gang had earlier claimed responsibility for the murder of liquor baron Shantanu in Kurukshetra on June 13. Last December, Romil, along with his associates, allegedly gunned down three persons outside a gym in Yamunanagar. Last month, he allegedly opened fire multiple times at an IELTS centre in Yamunanagar in an extortion-related incident. Rana brothers and Lawrence connection A police officer said that Kala Rana used to operate in collaboration with the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate at Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar in Haryana. 'He befriended Bishnoi while staying in jail,' the officer added. For the past few months, his younger brother, Noni, has been running the gang from abroad, following his extradition to India from Bangkok in 2022, the officer further said. According to the police, Noni was involved in the daring escape of gangster Kuleep Mann alias Fajja from East Delhi's GTB Hospital in March 2021. This January, the National Investigation Agency had conducted raids at Kala Rana's residence in Yamunanagar, said police.

Man gets 7 years imprisonment for attempt to murder tailor
The Assistant Sessions Court at Padmanabhapuram has awarded 7 years rigorous imprisonment to a man for attempting to murder a tailor. According to prosecution, G. Gopan alais Babu of Nagalcode Padanilam under Kulasekaram police station limits had illegally occupied a portion of the land belonging to neighbour K. Jayakumar, 64, and built a compound wall on the encroached property 10 years ago. As Mr. Jayakumar opposed it, there was an enmity between them. When Mr. Jayakumar was in his tailor shop on January 2, 2013, Babu and his wife Ambili trespassed into the shop around 7 p.m. and verbally abused him. Moreover, Babu attacked Mr. Jayakumar with a knife he was carrying, in which the victim sustained bleeding injuries on the head and left shoulder. Subsequently, the Kulasekaram police registered case against Babu and Ambili for trespassing into the shop and attempting to murder Mr. Jayakumar. The couple was arrested. While acquitting Ambili, Padmanabhapuram Assistant Sessions Judge K. Mariappan on Wednesday awarded 2 years imprisonment to Babu for trespassing into the shop and causing injury and imposed a fine of ₹ 2,000. The judge also awarded 7 years rigorous imprisonment to him for attempting to murder Mr. Jayakumar and slapped a fine of Rs. 3,000.
