Cyclist struck by vehicle in Ottawa awaiting surgery, no time frame for recovery

Article content According to their mother, Leslie-Anne Barrett, Padron is a talented painter and poet who has put their art skills to use by helping Barrett with her freelance hair and makeup work. Article content Article content 'They're a very, very brainy person,' Barrett said of Padron. 'In our family we go, 'How's the big brain doing?' because it's hard to keep up with them.' Article content Article content On July 22, while cycling on Sweetnam Drive, south of Hazeldean Road and east of the Amberwood Village Golf and Country Club, Padron was struck by a vehicle before being transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Article content Article content An Ottawa Police Services investigation is ongoing. Article content Padron has been unconscious with brain and bone injuries at the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital since the collision. As of the afternoon of July 31, they were getting slowly taken off sedatives and being prepared for orthopedic surgery, which Barrett said was expected within the next 48 hours. Article content Doctors could not provide the family with an estimated time frame for recovery, Barrett said. 'It's a waiting game now … We're just praying that there is a time frame.' Article content 'We can see a little light through the clouds,' Barrett added, 'but by no means are we out of the woods.' Article content Article content Barrett is the primary caregiver of her elderly mother, and Padron moved in with Barrett in April. A GoFundMe to support Barrett and Padron's family has raised more than $47,000 so far. Article content Before the accident, Padron was preparing to head back to work as an outreach worker with the Somerset West Community Health Centre, supporting people experiencing homelessness and substance addiction. 'Going back to this type of work was a big decision for them,' Barrett said. Article content 'But that's one thing I can say about my kid … They've never, ever made it about themselves,' she continued, adding that Padron didn't often let others take their photo. Article content The 'devastation' of the accident has had a 'significant' impact on Padron's family, with Barrett saying they've been unable to return to work since the incident. Article content One day after Padron's collision, one child on a bicycle and another child on a scooter were both struck by vehicles on Ottawa roadways. On July 26, a woman cyclist in her 70s was killed in a collision with a motor vehicle on Mitch Owens Road in the city's south end. Article content Barrett wants drivers to be mindful of the others sharing the road. Article content 'When you're driving a car or you're in a hurry and you want to cut through because your time is so important, remember that there could be an elderly person with a dog, there could be someone with a baby carriage, there could be children coming home from school, or there could be someone on a bicycle,' she said.

Prince Edward Island acquires land for new hospital and health centre

(Source: government of Prince Edward Island) The Government of Prince Edward Island announced Thursday it has acquired land for the future Kings County Memorial Hospital (KCMH) and Community Health Centre in Three Rivers. The land is located near Montague off AA MacDonald Road, a 'centrally located and accessible site,' a news release from the province said. 'We are planning for the future of health care in Prince Edward Island, with a focus on what Islanders will need in the years ahead,' said Rob Lantz, premier of Prince Edward Island. 'Securing this land is a key step as we work toward a new Kings County Memorial Hospital. It reflects our long-term commitment to supporting strong communities across the province.' The 84.7 acres of land was purchased through a private sale. The site will include several health facilities such as the KCMH, which will replace the existing hospital and a new Community Health Centre. The next phase of development will determine how the land can best support health services for the region. 'This is about planning smart for the future. Having the right land in the right location gives us a strong foundation for future development,' said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Ernie Hudson. 'This kind of early, proactive investment ensures that when we're ready to move forward with design and construction, we'll be well positioned to do so.' Specific timelines on building design and construction will be determined during future phases of the project. 4 Girl Students In Hospital. They Were Made To Do 200 Sit-Ups For Being Late
Four students were admitted to a hospital in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum on Monday as they collapsed after allegedly being made to do 200 sit-ups for reaching school late, according to their families. They were class 12 students of the Kasturba Gandhi Girls School in Bagunda in Patamda block. They are at present undergoing treatment at the ICU of MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur. They were made to do the sit-ups as they reached school five minutes late, their families alleged. Following the sit-ups, the girls started vomiting and fell unconscious. They were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Macha, from where they were sent to the MGM Hospital. District Education Officer Manoj Kumar told PTI that he will conduct a probe into this incident and take appropriate action against the teacher, who ordered the punishment, if found guilty. JMM MLA Mangal Kalindi, who visited the hospital, told PTI that two of the students were fasting as it was an auspicious Monday of the holy Shravan month. He directed the hospital authorities to take special care of the students, whose condition was stated to be stable. He said the KGGS band had earned laurels for their performance during the Republic Day parade in New Delhi.

Following Barabanki stampede, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex gratia of five lakh for the families of deceased. Panic and chaos erupted after a live wire broken by monkeys fell onto a tin shed leading to electrocution at 2:00 am on July 28. The CM's Office issued a statement on X of behalf of Yogi Adityanath stating that the CM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Barabanki's temple. The post in Hindi states, "Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath Ji Maharaj has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in an unfortunate accident at the Shri Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple premises in Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased." Revealing that the UP CM directed the district administration officials to ensure timely delivery of relief operation and expedite the proper treatment of the injured, the post added, 'Maharaj Ji has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations. Maharaj Ji has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the Supreme Deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured.' Two people died and over 30 were injured due to electrocution from a fallen wire at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki early on Monday morning. On the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan devotees had lined up for darshan when the incident happened at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev temple at 2:30 am. Those injured people were taken to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh and Trivediganj. "The incident happened in the Awsaneshwar temple at around 2-2.30 am. Some people came in contact with electric wires, which caused panic. A total of 29 people were brought to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh. One of them was referred to the district hospital. His condition is out of danger. Nine people were taken to the community health centre Trivediganj, out of which two were brought dead and the remaining seven are out of danger," Chief Medical Officer Awadhesh Prasad said. "There were six more injured, who were taken to the community health centre... All have been discharged," he added. District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya reached the temple premises along with senior officers. DM Tripathi said, "Devotees came to Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple to offer prayers on Monday of the 'saavan' month. The electric wire broke and fell on the shed. Around 19 people were injured by electric shocks. The injured were taken to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centre. Two people are in a critical situation and have been referred to the District law and order situation is normal here." Some monkeys jumped onto the overhead electric wires, causing them to fall onto the tin shed. Some of those injured were taken to the Trivediganj Community Health Centre, while a few others were referred to a higher medical facility due to their critical condition. On Sunday, a stampede took place at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, claiming the lives of eight people and leaving 30 others injured. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, when a large crowd of devotees was climbing nearly 800 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, according to officials. Upon receiving the information, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire brigade arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations.
