Barabanki stampede: Yogi Adityanath announces ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for victims' families, orders swift relief efforts
The CM's Office issued a statement on X of behalf of Yogi Adityanath stating that the CM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Barabanki's temple.
The post in Hindi states, "Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath Ji Maharaj has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in an unfortunate accident at the Shri Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple premises in Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased."
Revealing that the UP CM directed the district administration officials to ensure timely delivery of relief operation and expedite the proper treatment of the injured, the post added, 'Maharaj Ji has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations. Maharaj Ji has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the Supreme Deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured.'
Two people died and over 30 were injured due to electrocution from a fallen wire at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki early on Monday morning.
On the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan devotees had lined up for darshan when the incident happened at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev temple at 2:30 am. Those injured people were taken to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh and Trivediganj.
"The incident happened in the Awsaneshwar temple at around 2-2.30 am. Some people came in contact with electric wires, which caused panic. A total of 29 people were brought to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh. One of them was referred to the district hospital. His condition is out of danger. Nine people were taken to the community health centre Trivediganj, out of which two were brought dead and the remaining seven are out of danger," Chief Medical Officer Awadhesh Prasad said.
"There were six more injured, who were taken to the community health centre... All have been discharged," he added.
District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya reached the temple premises along with senior officers.
DM Tripathi said, "Devotees came to Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple to offer prayers on Monday of the 'saavan' month. The electric wire broke and fell on the shed. Around 19 people were injured by electric shocks. The injured were taken to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centre. Two people are in a critical situation and have been referred to the District Hospital...The law and order situation is normal here."
Some monkeys jumped onto the overhead electric wires, causing them to fall onto the tin shed. Some of those injured were taken to the Trivediganj Community Health Centre, while a few others were referred to a higher medical facility due to their critical condition.
On Sunday, a stampede took place at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, claiming the lives of eight people and leaving 30 others injured. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, when a large crowd of devotees was climbing nearly 800 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, according to officials.
Upon receiving the information, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire brigade arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a magisterial inquiry and announced ex-gratia of ₹ 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹ 50,000 for the injured. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced ₹ 2 lakh financial aid for families of the deceased from Uttar Pradesh.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), in a joint operation with Sitapur police, gunned down two wanted criminals —Raju Tiwari and his brother Sanjay Tiwari—in an early morning encounter in the Pisawan area of Sitapur on Thursday morning. Both were carrying a cash reward of ₹1 lakh each for information leading to their arrest. According to Additional Director General (ADG) of STF, Amitabh Yash, the slain duo were residents of Atwa village under Misrikh police station limits and were the prime accused in the sensational murder of journalist and RTI activist Raghvendra Vajpayee. The 36-year-old reporter, associated with a national Hindi daily, was shot dead in broad daylight on March 8 in Sitapur. While police had arrested Shivanand Baba and two others a month after the murder, the shooters had remained at large—until Thursday's encounter. STF officials said the shootout occurred during a targeted raid based on intelligence inputs about the movement of the absconding accused. As the joint team closed in, the suspects opened fire, prompting retaliatory action. Both Raju and Sanjay sustained serious bullet injuries and were rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), from where they were referred to the District Hospital, Sitapur. Doctors there declared them dead on arrival. Additional SP of STF, Raj Kumar Mishra, said that Raju Tiwari alias Rizwan was also wanted in the 2006 murder of Sub-Inspector Parvez Ali in Lakhimpur Kheri. In that case, he had allegedly hacked the officer to death and fled with his service revolver. His brother Sanjay Tiwari had shot and killed one Devi Sahay Shukla in 2011 in the Machhrehata police station area of Sitapur. STF said the brothers had a long and violent criminal record spanning over two dozen cases, including murder, loot, dacoity, and illegal arms possession. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and further legal formalities are underway, officials said.

Uttar Pradesh govt proposes new law to decriminalise 293 minor offences
In a bid to create an industry-friendly atmosphere and remove irritants in the ease of doing business, the Uttar Pradesh government proposes to enact a new law to decriminalise 293 minor offences and replace the provisions for imprisonment with civic penalties The state government is working on bringing the new law on the pattern of the Jan Vishwas Adhiniyam that the Centre enacted in 2023, those aware of the development said. (REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE) Those aware of the development said the 293 provisions proposed to be decriminalised are part of nearly 15-20 acts and the proposed law would ensure that the penalties are commensurate with the seriousness of the crime. The Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, the laws for urban local bodies that include the municipal corporations, the Fire Services Act, the Tree Protection Act, labour laws and the laws for industry have provisions for imprisonment for minor offences. The proposed new law will decriminalise them. Under the proposed new law, there will be provisions for compounding of minor offences. The provisions for imprisonment up to about six months will be replaced by a fine of a few thousand of rupees or to a lakh or so. 'We propose to enact a new law to decriminalise 293 of 294 provisions of law as part of the state government's efforts to provide an industry-friendly atmosphere and relax provisions for the ease of doing business. No relaxation will be made in the provisions for imprisonment if the offence causes health hazards or directly affects human lives,' said a senior officer of the state government. The state government is working on bringing the new law on the pattern of the Jan Vishwas Adhiniyam that the Centre enacted in 2023, those aware of the development said. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has time and again asked the officers to remove irritants in the ease of doing business. Chief secretary SP Goyal also chaired a meeting convened on Tuesday to review the progress under the flagship Compliance and Reduction and Deregulation 2025 initiative. Efforts to ease the regulations and create an industry-friendly ecosystem are part of this initiative. A senior officer said the draft of the new law is being finalised and once approved by the state cabinet, the proposed legislation may be moved in the monsoon session of the state legislature commencing on August 11.

West Bengal: Tension in Barasat after clashes break out during Suvendu Adhikari's rally
Tensions flared in Barasat, in the North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday during the BJP's 'Kanya Suraksha Yatra' rally, led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, as Trinamool Congress supporters allegedly clashed with BJP participants, during the event aimed at highlighting crimes against women in the state. According to reports, a confrontation erupted when the BJP procession reached the Champadali More, in Barasat, where a TMC party office is located. The BJP has alleged that TMC workers made provocative remarks toward Adhikari, sparking a scuffle, and leading to stone-pelting and vandalism. A BJP supporter was reportedly injured in the incident. In response, the TMC supporters, reportedly, not only accused the BJP of instigating the violence, but also claimed that BJP participants shouted slogans to harass them and physically assaulted them, retaliating with sticks and water bottles, while they were standing near their party office. A banner featuring TMC leader Mamata Banerjee was also reportedly targeted. Police personnel, including those from Rapid Action Battalion, were deployed to bring the situation under control, officials said. Several motorcycles were also reportedly vandalised in the chaos. The senior BJP leader later claimed he was attacked in Barasat, but managed to escape, drawing a parallel to the Cooch Behar incident. Following the incident, Adhikari posted on X that the 'Kanya Suraksha Yatra' was a demand for the safety of women in the state, citing a rise in violence against women under the TMC government. Adhikari further said that atrocities against women were on the rise in Bengal due to a 'complete collapse of law and order.' There was no immediate response from the TMC regarding the allegations. The incident comes a day after Adhikari's convoy was allegedly attacked by some people in Cooch Behar district on Tuesday afternoon.
