Investigating Weather With New Satellites

It's no surprise to many of us that the world is facing unique kinds of weather challenges right now.
Governments around the world are trying to get up to speed on information about changing weather and the life of the biosphere.
In the U.S., The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA is responsible for much of this research.
Among recent NOAA findings is that the United States has experienced 24 weather-related disasters causing over $1 billion dollars in damages, and that the country has been experiencing at least 10 of these a year for a decade. That's part of what has set the stage for ongoing efforts to improve our national response to the climate situation.
The NOAA maintains various types of equipment and methods to analyze global weather and predict likely outcomes, while diagnosing the health of the planet. Citing increased disaster risk, the agency has established key goals including disaster response, recovery (restoring essential services and facilities) and mitigation of damage.
But how does this work? What tools do we have at our disposal, and how does the public sector work with the private sector to address this?
Innovating Weather Investigation
Dan Slagen is CMO at Tomorrow.io, a company that is helping to figure out what's happening at a global level. I covered the work of this startup before, in the context of what happens at Davos each year, and our 'under the dome' work with TCS, although the prior post had a bigger focus on deep space and market context.
In a recent TED talk, Slagen reviewed more of what's happening with this type of research, and how the company is contributing to more granular understanding.
He pointed out the value in observations with model training, inference and initialization, and reinforcement learning.
'Why is weather forecasting so hard?' Slagen asked.
Answering his own question, Slagen suggested that there's a critical data problem that he called a 'lack of global coverage,' along with other 'coverage performance limitations.'
But new satellites and deployment strategies may help.
The Technology
One of the interesting parts of Slagen's presentation, to me, was the enumeration of five kinds of data work that support operations.
The first one is multi-spectrum imaging, and the second one is high-resolution imaging.
These are pretty straightforward. The third one was new to me – It's called radio occultation.
On Googling, it turns out that this is the study of planetary landscapes and infrastructure with remote sensing (check out this link from UCAR).
Then there's a synthetic aperture radar, which according to the expert sources I reviewed, is a form of active remote sensing that uses the movement of the radar platform (like a satellite or plane) to simulate a large antenna — a "synthetic aperture" — which allows it to capture very high-resolution images.
ChatGPT provides this step-by-step explanation of how it works, in plain English, using Wikipedia and government sources:
In addition to the above four technologies, Slagen simply named 'telecom.'
None of these, he suggested, is specifically designed for atmospheric 3-D research.
A Government Directive
'NASA realized (the deficiency) years ago,' Slagen said, 'and they essentially said, 'look, whoever comes up with a new data architecture is going to completely give a step step function change to global weather forecasting forever.'
Tomorrow.io went to work, building a microwave sounder satellite, and now has seven of these in orbit, having launched the most recent one from Cape Canaveral weeks ago.
'We're building a full-blown constellation that is the first commercial constellation on earth,' Slagen added, 'in order to 'see' weather for the first time.'
Why is it important? One of Slagen's points is the collective cost of disasters; estimated at $1 billion every 13 days in the U.S. That keeps insurance adjusters busy.
'There are very few things on earth that affect all 8 billion people,' Slagen said. 'Weather just happens to be one of those things.'
First of Its Kind
As for Slagen's claim that Tomorrow.io is pioneering private sector work on microwave sounder satellites, when I googled, I also found resources for a similar project undertaken by Northrop Grumman, a publicly traded company on the NYSE. However, digging a little deeper, it appears that the firm created the tech for NOAA, so yes, technically, Tomorrow.io's project represents that first fully private sector initiative of its kind.
Watching the rest of the presentation, you can see how all of this contributes to robust weather data: Slagen shows us vibrant color pictures of weather activity, much of which, he explains, is new. We see storm movement in detail, and can forecast what's going to happen in our personal lives as weather events develop. That's a big value in a world where the weather seems to be constantly changing more and more often.

Chatbots can be genuinely impressive when you watch them do things they're good at, like writing realistic-sounding text or creating weird futuristic-looking images. But try to ask generative AI to solve one of those puzzles you find in the back of a newspaper, and things can quickly go off the rails. That's what researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found when they challenged different large language models to solve Sudoku. And not even the standard 9x9 puzzles. An easier 6x6 puzzle was often beyond the capabilities of an LLM without outside help (in this case, specific puzzle-solving tools). The more important finding came when the models were asked to show their work. For the most part, they couldn't. Sometimes they lied. Sometimes they explained things in ways that made no sense. Sometimes they hallucinated and started talking about the weather. If gen AI tools can't explain their decisions accurately or transparently, that should cause us to be cautious as we give these things more and more control over our lives and decisions, said Ashutosh Trivedi, a computer science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and one of the authors of the paper published in July in the Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics. "We would really like those explanations to be transparent and be reflective of why AI made that decision, and not AI trying to manipulate the human by providing an explanation that a human might like," Trivedi said. When you make a decision, you can at least try to justify it or explain how you arrived at it. That's a foundational component of society. We are held accountable for the decisions we make. An AI model may not be able to accurately or transparently explain itself. Would you trust it? Why LLMs struggle with Sudoku We've seen AI models fail at basic games and puzzles before. OpenAI's ChatGPT (among others) has been totally crushed at chess by the computer opponent in a 1979 Atari game. A recent research paper from Apple found that models can struggle with other puzzles, like the Tower of Hanoi. It has to do with the way LLMs work and fill in gaps in information. These models try to complete those gaps based on what happens in similar cases in their training data or other things they've seen in the past. With a Sudoku, the question is one of logic. The AI might try to fill each gap in order, based on what seems like a reasonable answer, but to solve it properly, it instead has to look at the entire picture and find a logical order that changes from puzzle to puzzle. They find logical next moves but don't necessarily think three, four or five moves ahead. That's the fundamental skill needed to play chess well. Chatbots also sometimes tend to move chess pieces in ways that don't really follow the rules or put pieces in meaningless jeopardy. You might expect LLMs to be able to solve Sudoku because they're computers and the puzzle consists of numbers, but the puzzles themselves are not really mathematical; they're symbolic. "Sudoku is famous for being a puzzle with numbers that could be done with anything that is not numbers," said Fabio Somenzi, a professor at CU and one of the research paper's authors. I used a sample prompt from the researchers' paper and gave it to ChatGPT. The tool showed its work, and repeatedly told me it had the answer before showing a puzzle that didn't work, then going back and correcting it. It was like the bot was turning in a presentation that kept getting last-second edits: This is the final answer. No, actually, never mind, this is the final answer. It got the answer eventually, through trial and error. But trial and error isn't a practical way for a person to solve a Sudoku in the newspaper. That's way too much erasing and ruins the fun. AI and robots can be good at games if they're built to play them, but general-purpose tools like large language models can struggle with logic puzzles. Ore Huiying/Bloomberg via Getty Images AI struggles to show its work The Colorado researchers didn't just want to see if the bots could solve puzzles. They asked for explanations of how the bots worked through them. Things did not go well. Testing OpenAI's o1-preview reasoning model, the researchers saw that the explanations -- even for correctly solved puzzles -- didn't accurately explain or justify their moves and got basic terms wrong. "One thing they're good at is providing explanations that seem reasonable," said Maria Pacheco, an assistant professor of computer science at CU. "They align to humans, so they learn to speak like we like it, but whether they're faithful to what the actual steps need to be to solve the thing is where we're struggling a little bit." Sometimes, the explanations were completely irrelevant. Since the paper's work was finished, the researchers have continued to test new models released. Somenzi said that when he and Trivedi were running OpenAI's o4 reasoning model through the same tests, at one point, it seemed to give up entirely. "The next question that we asked, the answer was the weather forecast for Denver," he said. Explaining yourself is an important skill When you solve a puzzle, you're almost certainly able to walk someone else through your thinking. The fact that these LLMs failed so spectacularly at that basic job isn't a trivial problem. With AI companies constantly talking about "AI agents" that can take actions on your behalf, being able to explain yourself is essential. Consider the types of jobs being given to AI now, or planned for in the near future: driving, doing taxes, deciding business strategies and translating important documents. Imagine what would happen if you, a person, did one of those things and something went wrong. "When humans have to put their face in front of their decisions, they better be able to explain what led to that decision," Somenzi said. It isn't just a matter of getting a reasonable-sounding answer. It needs to be accurate. One day, an AI's explanation of itself might have to hold up in court, but how can its testimony be taken seriously if it's known to lie? You wouldn't trust a person who failed to explain themselves, and you also wouldn't trust someone you found was saying what you wanted to hear instead of the truth. "Having an explanation is very close to manipulation if it is done for the wrong reason," Trivedi said. "We have to be very careful with respect to the transparency of these explanations."

Sonos confirms tariffs will increase its prices this year

Tom Conrad took over as CEO of Sonos in January as it continues to recover from last year's disastrous mobile app update, and now the company has issued its first quarterly earnings report after he dropped the interim tag from his title. Beyond the numbers, with $344.8 million in revenue and a net loss of $3.4 million, Conrad acknowledged the impact that President Trump's tariffs will have on its business, saying that 'it has become clear that we'll need to raise prices on certain products later this year,' as reported earlier by Bloomberg. Conrad didn't go into detail on the price changes and said that Sonos is working with its partners to share the extra costs, as nearly all of its products for the US are made in Vietnam and Malaysia, which are both facing higher tariff rates soon. Conrad: With respect to our operations, like many companies, the most significant near-term challenge has been the uncertain tariff environment. As a reminder short of a few accessories, and our passive speaker partnership with Sonance (I think this is what he said?) we do all of our us-bound manufacturing in Vietnam and Malaysia. We talked last quarter about the contingency planning we underwent to minimize the effects of terrorists on our business, while also doing what we can to limit the downstream impact to our customers. Last week's news, the tariff rates we were subject to going forward, appeared to be 20 percent for Vietnam and 19 percent for Malaysia. We continue to work closely with our contract manufacturers and our Channel Partners to share tariff costs, though it has become clear that we'll need to raise prices on certain products later this year. As these pricing changes land, we'll monitor consumer behavior closely as well as competitive Trends across our categories and will make adjustments in collaboration with our Channel Partners, when and if necessary, to ensure we're exploring every opportunity to optimize our respective top and bottom lines. In response to one of the analyst's questions, Conrad said, 'I think the best way to think about what we're trying to do here strategically is to craft a pricing plan that supports our goal of optimizing growth profit dollars.' As a result, the executive said that the price changes could vary across different products, depending on the market and with an eye towards what competitors are doing. He pointed to some software updates Sonos has released lately, like multiuser TV audio swap and TrueCinema audio adjustments for its Ace headphones, and a recent AI speech enhancement for the Arc Ultra.
