Delhi: PWD, Flood Control dept to begin drain inspections to tackle waterlogging before monsoon

India Gazette22-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): Following unseasonal rainfall that led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, the Delhi government has stepped up its efforts to address this recurring issue ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
The Public Works Department (PWD) and the Irrigation & Flood Control Department will jointly inspect the cleaning and repair of drains across Delhi.
All engineers have been instructed to submit their inspection reports for 1,259 km of roads by May 28. Special focus is being given to the cleaning of drains alongside roads under the jurisdiction of the PWD
Meanwhile, the national capital witnessed an intense dust storm on Wednesday, followed by thunderstorms, hail, and rain, which lashed parts of Delhi.
The power outages were seen in Delhi's Bawana, Narela, Jahangirpuri, Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirabad, Dhirpur, and Burari areas.
Many domestic and international flights to Delhi airport were put on hold or diverted due to inclement weather conditions. 'Many domestic and international flights to Delhi airport from various airports have been put on halt or diverted due to weather conditions,' said airport sources.
The rain brought down the temperature by 14 degrees Celsius. IMD officials said that from 37 degrees Celsius at 7.30 pm, it dropped to 23 degrees Celsius at 8.30 pm at Palam.
Delhi Fire Service received more than 25 calls after the weather change, most related to fallen trees.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited waterlogged areas and described the problem as a 'disease' inherited from the previous government. She acknowledged that resolving the crisis will take time, but assured residents of the government's firm commitment to finding lasting solutions.
'This disease, which we have got from the previous government, will take time to be cured. The government is fully prepared to fix these problems, and officials are working on the roads. It is our responsibility to complete all arrangements on time,' Gupta said. (ANI)

Heavy rainfall likely in north Tamil Nadu this week

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted heavy rainfall in north Tamil Nadu districts and later in the Western Ghats region this week while Chennai may experience a drop in day temperature. What began as a warm Monday (June 9, 2025) morning turned into a refreshing surprise in the afternoon hours as sharp showers swept across several parts of Chennai, offering much-needed respite from the day's heat. Several areas, including Mylapore, Chintadripet, Anna Nagar, Adyar and Chepauk received rainfall since 2.30 p.m. on Monday. The sudden showers slowed down traffic on arterial roads and motorists had to wade through waterlogged stretches, including Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. The day temperature in Chennai took a sharp fall to 30 degree Celsius by 4 p.m., thanks to the showers and the overcast sky. Wet weather in T.N. till weekend The RMC Chennai has forecast wet weather to continue over Tamil Nadu with heavy rainfall expected in various districts till the weekend. B. Amudha, Head (Additional in-charge), RMC Chennai, said an east-west oriented trough in the upper levels triggered the wet weather in the city. Chennai will continue to experience light to moderate rainfall in some areas on Tuesday (June 10) as well, she added.

Delhi's temperature to surpass 45 degrees Celsius in coming days, IMD issues orange alert

Amid the national capital sizzling with heat, the India Meteorological Department has predicted that the temperature may rise to over 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. According to the Met Department, the city's temperature reached its highest point of June so far, 44 degrees Celsius, on Monday. In the early morning, it touched 27.6 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels recorded at around 48 per cent. Earlier on Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature at 42.1 degrees Celsius. Warning of 'hot and humid' conditions continuing in the city, the IMD has issued an orange alert for the next four days for national capital and surrounding states, including Haryana, Punjab and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. "If we talk about Northwest India, then for the next four days, most of the subdivisions—especially in the plains—are likely to experience heatwave conditions. In Delhi NCR, the temp is expected to rise above 45 degrees Celsius today and tomorrow [Monday and Tuesday], creating heatwave conditions in isolated places. A yellow alert has been issued for the region,' IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava told ANI. Not only this, the air quality also worsened in Delhi, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 219 on Monday morning. The level is categorised as 'poor' by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). According to the Met Department, Delhi may witness rain by the middle of the week. IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall across parts of North India, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph). In Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh, light to moderate rainfall are expected on 13-14 June, while Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh could see scattered showers between 11-14 June. Punjab may also receive rain on 14 June. However, the rainfall may be patchy and may bring temporary respite from the searing temperature. IMD advised residents to stay alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds during this period.
