Saints Play of the Day: Alvin Kamara's smooth, clutch 31-yard pickup helped seal a win
Back in Week 16 of the 2018 season, New Orleans was riding high on a fantastic campaign and fighting for the best playoff seeding possible. They were 12-2, but would have a tough challenge ahead of them against a feisty Pittsburgh Steelers squad that was fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger were dueling it out in the twilight of their careers, each facing a solid defense. Brees threw an early interception, but the Saints defense did a good job in holding the Steelers to just a field goal.
New Orleans held a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter, but Pittsburgh tied the game with just 40 seconds left in the half. With no timeouts left, it looked like the game was going to head into the break at 14-14. But quick gains from Ted Ginn Jr. and Benjamin Watson gave the Saints a glimmer of hope.
That's when Kamara did what he did best and came up with an ultra-clutch catch-and-run. Brees delivered a pass to the back just past the line of scrimmage and then Kamara glided through (and past) defenders, managing to pick up 31 yards and getting out of bounds.
This set up a 43-yard field goal by Wil Lutz. New Orleans would go on to win the game 31-28, with those three points that Kamara helped pick up at the half proving crucial.

5 things that stood out in the Chargers' preseason win over the Saints
The Chargers improved to 2-0 in preseason play, defeating the Saints on Sunday. While the record is meaningless during this time of the year, there were still a few things to take away from this game regarding the evaluation process. Here is what stood out from Los Angeles' 27-13 win over New Orleans. Trey Lance is taking the lead Trey Lance made a strong impression in the Hall of Fame Game against the Lions, where he popped as a passer. Lance, who relieved Taylor Heinicke, wasn't as sharp in that department on Sunday, but he did make his mark with his mobility. He led the team in rushing with 48 yards on seven carries, which included a five-yard touchdown. 'He was a good presence and poised and in control,' Jim Harbaugh said about Lance. 'You make the right decisions. That's really what it comes down to. Not everybody can do it.' After Heinicke's struggles and another stock-raising performance, Lance is making his case to be Justin Herbert's primary backup. Eric Rogers excels Last week against Detroit, it was Nikko Reed who was the standout performer among the cornerbacks. While Reed was sidelined and not suited up, Rogers took the spotlight this week. The undrafted rookie out of Rutgers recorded two interceptions, one of which was returned for a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter that extended the Chargers' lead to 17-3. He also had a pass deflection in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Rogers injured his ankle on the kickoff coverage unit. He was seen on crutches in the locker room after the game. Roster spot secured? Heading into the summer, I thought the Chargers would only roster four edge rushers, with those being Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, Bud Dupree, and fourth-round pick Kyle Kennard. But now, they are in a position where it might be five players rostered, and the fourth spot could end up going to Caleb Murphy. Murphy followed up a standout performance against the Lions with another dominant showing. He notched two sacks, including a strip-sack that set up the Bolts' first points of the game. Along with his defensive efforts, Murphy has been a core special teamer, working with the first-team coverage units. He's had a special teams tackle in both preseason games. Raheim Sanders emerges The Chargers' running back battle behind Omarion Hampton is heating up. With Najee Harris' availability uncertain due to his eye injury, they will need to figure out who will be Hampton's running mate if Harris is unable to start the season. After missing most of the practices and the Hall of Fame Game with an injury, Raheim "Rocket" Sanders made his presence known, leading all running backs with 42 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while adding a catch for 11 yards. Questions on offense The Chargers picked up the win, but it was largely due to the defensive efforts, while the offense was disjointed, especially early on in the game. Heinicke only completed one of his five passes for eight yards. Lance was 50% on his passes. With the passing game taking a backseat, it didn't offer much from an evaluation standpoint for the receivers. The interior part of the offensive line also struggled, particularly in picking up stunts.

Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough comes off the bench, outplays Spencer Rattler
Rookie second-round draft pick Tyler Shough seems likely to be the New Orleans Saints' starting quarterback in Week 1. It's not like they have many great choices. The Saints are holding a quarterback competition through training camp and preseason, and while Shough had a big mistake on an interception returned for a touchdown, he performed better than his main competition, Spencer Rattler. Rattler started the game, but it might not be long before Shough overtakes him on the depth chart. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Rattler got the start, a nod to his one year of experience. He didn't do much with the opportunity. The Saints punted on their first possession, were stopped on downs after that despite recovering a muffed punt at the Chargers' 17-yard line, punted again after a three-and-out and then Rattler lost a fumble on a strip sack. Rattler has some athleticism and got a first down with an 11-yard run on third-and-7 on New Orleans' fifth drive, but that drive also stalled and ended with a punt. It wasn't exactly the type of audition Rattler, a fifth-round pick last year, needed. He had 53 yards on 7-of-11 passing and the offense scored zero points in nearly a full first half with him at quarterback. Rattler exited the game with 1:38 left in the second quarter, and Shough came on for his first NFL snaps. Shough ran the two-minute offense and completed his first pass for 9 yards. On the next play Shough missed a deep shot down the right sideline, throwing just a bit long, but rebounded quickly for a nice pass for a 12-yard gain and then another 11-yard completion over the middle. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 42 yards, and had another incompletion when he spiked it to stop the clock. The Saints got their first points of the half with a field goal. The two-minute offense can simplify things for any quarterback, especially a rookie, but Shough looked very comfortable in that situation. The third quarter didn't start as well. The Saints went three-and-out, with Shough taking a sack on third down. It got worse. The next possession, Shough threw a pick 6. Shough made a bad decision to throw a well-covered out route and cornerback Eric Rogers broke on his pass, intercepted it and returned it 43 yards for the score. Shough got the touchdown right back. He was well protected and found Mason Tipton wide open downfield for a 54-yard score. It was a good play for the rookie and also showed resilience after a big mistake. Shough completed 15 of 22 passes for 165 yards, with a touchdown, an interception and he took two sacks. He wasn't perfect but did some things well. Jake Haener, who started one game for the Saints last season, took over for Shough with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Shough showed good poise through some mistakes, which you'd expect from a quarterback who will turn 26 years old in September and played part of seven different college football seasons. Shough had plenty of supporters in the pre-draft process. When the team drafted him and Derek Carr retired, it seemed clear Shough would probably be New Orleans' starter this season practically by default. He hasn't taken the top spot yet, but it might not be too long before he does.

6 players who impressed Jim Harbaugh in the Chargers' preseason win over the Saints
The Chargers defeated the Saints, 27-13, in a preseason game that featured a handful of standout players. At his media availability, head coach Jim Harbaugh highlighted six of them that impressed him: Rogers, the undrafted rookie out of Rutgers, took advantage of his extensive playing time. Rogers recorded two interceptions in the game, including a 43-yard interception returned for a touchdown in the third quarter. Harbaugh called it "as good a play as I've ever seen." Rogers left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury and was seen with crutches after the game. The third-year player Murphy continued his stellar summer with two sacks, including a strip-sack in the second quarter. Harbaugh believed Murphy deserved credit for three sacks in the game. He also noted that Murphy is making a "very good case" for a spot on the 53-man roster. The undrafted rookie out of Syracuse, Wax, led the team with nine tackles. He also notched a sack. While Taylor Heinicke struggled in his first preseason outing of the year, Lance continued to make a strong case to be the primary backup to Justin Herbert. Lance showcased his rushing ability, leading the team in that department with 48 yards on seven carries, including a 5-yard rushing touchdown. Despite the passing game taking a backseat in this game, Campbell still made the most of his opportunities. The former Gamecock finished with three catches for 62 yards, including a 49-yard haul late in the game from DJ Uiagalelei. Campbell also converted a two-point attempt from Lance. Williamson stood out in the tackling department, both on defense and special teams.
