Mavi Garcia becomes oldest stage winner at women's Tour de France at 41
The 41-year-old Spaniard clinched the second stage with a solo breakaway. She looked back twice before realizing she would not be caught and then raised her arms aloft at the finish line.
Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten was 39 when she won a mountain stage on the 2022 women's Tour, organizers said.
Garcia attacked with about 11 kilometres left on the 110.4-kilometre hilly stage through Brittany and ending in Quimper. She looked like being caught near the end as the peloton loomed large behind her, but she kicked in and won by three seconds.
'I've been racing for a long time and I hadn't been having my best year, but this win really gives me a massive boost of energy,' Garcia said. 'I really didn't believe I was going to win at the end. I've tried many times like that and it never worked out, so I just couldn't believe it until I was five metres from the line.'

Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes was second and Kim Le Court of Mauritius took third place in a sprint to the line.
Le Court did just enough to take the race leader's yellow jersey from cycling great Marianne Vos, who won Saturday's opening stage in a close finish and placed fifth on Sunday.
Le Court and Vos have the same overall time after two stages, but Le Court now leads overall courtesy of her better combined stage finishes over the first two days.
Stage 3 on Monday is a flat stage for sprinters, ending in the western city of Angers. The nine-stage race ends on Aug. 3.
Last year provided the smallest winning margin in the history of the women's and men's races, with Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma beating 2023 champion Demi Vollering by four seconds, and Pauliena Rooijakkers only 10 seconds off the pace in third place.

Staff say this is part of a summer trial aimed at improving flexibility and access for drop-in users at all outdoor pools, including Kitsilano Pool, Second Beach Pool, New Brighton Pool, and Maple Grove Pool. The discount doesn't apply to length swim sessions between 7 and 8:30 a.m., or to reservations. The park board is also extending the broken-up afternoon sessions at Kits Pool into one long session. So that means the 3 to 5:30 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. sessions will now be combined for a 3 to 8:30 p.m. session. The reservation system will remain in place, with 80 per cent of spots allocated for reservations and 20 per cent allocated for drop-ins. The park board says its reservation system allows users, especially those travelling from farther away, to plan their visits with confidence. However, some argue that the reservation system, which was brought in during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, is too limiting for patrons. Earlier this month, park board chairperson Laura Christensen declined to hear a motion by ABC Vancouver park board commissioner Marie-Claire Howard to end the controversial reservation system. Cancelled reservations are non-refundable and don't go back into the system if someone decides not to come. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim argues there has been overwhelming public feedback asking that the 'outdated' booking system be scrapped. Christensen disagrees and has 'personally received significant positive feedback from residents who use and appreciate the booking system.' Twins deal Griffin Jax to Rays; Ty France, Louis Varland to Jays
(Photo credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images) The Minnesota Twins, who sit in fourth place in the American League Central, finished off their liquidation sale by making deals with a pair of AL East teams ahead of Thursday's deadline. The Twins dealt right-handed reliever Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays, landing right-handed starter Taj Bradley in return. And Minnesota shipped infielder Ty France and right-hander Louis Varland to the Toronto Blue Jays for rookie outfielder Alan Roden and left-handed prospect Kendry Rojas. Jax, 30, has spent his entire five-year major league career with Minnesota and is 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 50 relief appearances this season. He had a heated face-to-face with Twins manager Rocco Baldelli on Wednesday after being inserted into a blowout loss to the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning. He gave up three singles on 12 pitches before Baldelli pulled him for position player Kody Clemens. Jax was angry with the odd decisions but later said he apologized to Baldelli. While Jax gets a change of scenery in Tampa Bay, the Twins acquired a young arm in Bradley, 24, who is 6-6 this season with a 4.61 ERA in 21 starts. Across three years with the Rays, Bradley has gone 19-25 with a 4.70 ERA and thrown 378 strikeouts in 354 innings. France, 31, played 101 games in his first season with Minnesota after previous stops with San Diego, Seattle and Cincinnati. France is batting .251 this season with six homers and 44 RBIs. A 2022 All-Star selection, France is a career .262 hitter with 80 homers, 356 RBIs and a .736 OPS. Varland, 27, is a St. Paul native and went to college in the Twin Cities before being drafted by Minnesota in 2019. He has made 51 appearances out of the bullpen this season, pitching to a career-best 2.02 ERA while amassing a 3-3 record. He's 8-14 with a 4.62 ERA in 89 career games (22 starts) for the Twins. Roden, 25, has batted .204 with one home run and eight RBIs in 43 appearances as a rookie. Rojas, 22, has gone 1-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) this season across four minor league levels.
