Kannur set to launch its own cashew liquor, inspired by Goan Feni
KANNUR: Raise a toast, 'Kannur Feni' is officially on its way! Payyavoor Service Cooperative Bank has received the final green light to produce low-alcohol cashew liquor, and it's set to make its much-anticipated debut next cashew season. Inspired by the iconic Goan Feni, this homegrown version will be crafted from fresh cashew, distilled right here in Kannur.
The idea first took shape in 2016 when the cooperative approached the state government with a bold proposal to turn the region's abundant cashew harvest into a signature spirit. After years of waiting, and an official nod from government in June 2022, the project was held up by regulations. Now, with the assembly subject committee's report approved and the finance department setting tax rates, the stage is finally set.
'Payyavoor and surrounding areas have abundant cashew cultivation. I've nurtured the idea of Kannur Feni since 1990, when I was president of Payyavoor panchayat. It has been a long journey to secure the assembly subject committee's approval. We've applied for the excise licence, and the excise commissioner has assured us it will be granted. We expect to begin production by December this year,' said T M Joshi, president of the bank.
The cooperative has earmarked four acres of land in Kankirakolli for the distillery. 'Bringing together local farmers will help ensure quality. We estimate the production cost of one litre of Feni at around `200-250. With 100% excise tax, we expect to price it between `500-600,' Joshi said.
However, there's some uncertainty regarding the name. 'We had hoped to call it 'Kannur Feni', but since there is a patent for 'Feni' in Goa, we're cautious about using the term. With excise approval in hand, we'll seek legal advice on this matter,' he said. The licence permits distillation strictly from cashew, with the season running from December to May.

‘Naksha' Pilot to ensure accurate urban land records in UP: Minister
The 'Naksha' pilot programme aims to provide accurate and easily accessible urban land records in Uttar Pradesh. It will also contribute to transparent property ownership, more efficient urban planning, and improved infrastructure development, said Manoj Joshi, secretary, department of land resources, ministry of rural development while addressing a press conference on Monday. He said, the 'Naksha' pilot programme has been launched by the ministry of rural development in 157 urban local bodies in 27 states and 3 union territories in the year 2024-25 for the preparation of land records of urban areas. Ten urban local bodies of Uttar Pradesh have been selected under the programme. It includes Tanda (Ambedkar Nagar), Nawabganj (Barabanki), Anupshahr (Bulandshahr), Chitrakoot Dham (Chitrakoot), Gorakhpur (Gorakhpur), Hardoi (Hardoi), Jhansi (Jhansi), Chunar (Mirzapur), Puranpur (Pilibhit) and Tilhar (Shahjahanpur), he said. The state-of-the-art aerial and field survey techniques under Naksha are helping to build a comprehensive, GIS-integrated database of urban land parcels. Currently, 22.27% of Uttar Pradesh's population lives in urban areas. This figure is projected to rise to around 40% by 2031, he said. In view of the fast urbanisation there is a need for accurate and accessible urban land records. The programme will play important role in streamlining urban planning. The land records of urban areas maintained by urban bodies for tax collection have been found inadequate for establishing ownership rights. With the introduction of mapped urban land records, the status of land and ownership will now be clearly defined. This accurate determination of ownership is expected to help prevent fraud in urban property transactions. In case of disputes, it will facilitate smoother judicial proceedings. The data will not only aid in urban planning but also support the development of infrastructure facilities. The legally certified land data will help boost municipal revenue collection, enhance disaster preparedness, and attract private investment, he added. Speaking about the rural land records, Joshi stated the Uttar Pradesh revenue department has been managing them digitally by incorporating technology in land management processes, with support from the Revenue Board. Currently, land records such as real-time khatauni, maps, and khasra have been digitised. Village maps have also been digitised and geo-referenced, with each plot assigned a Geo-Aadhaar—Unique Land Parcel Identification Number (ULPIN)—based on its geospatial coordinates. ULPIN includes ownership details, plot size, and its latitude and longitude information. This system will streamline real estate transactions, aid in resolving property taxation issues, and enhance disaster planning and response efforts, he said. Joshi reviewed the progress of Digital India Land Record Modernization Program (DIL1RMP) and 'Naksha' programme in UP in a meeting with chairman of revenue board Anil Kumar. He stated that currently, details such as land ownership shares recorded in the khatauni, land disputes, sale transactions, maps, complaints filed on the Anti-Land Mafia Portal, enemy or evacuee property status, and bank mortgage information are all available online with just a single click. The facility of online application for succession, non-agricultural land declaration, income/caste/residence certificate, transfer of land of Scheduled Caste landholder, authorisation of transfer of more than 12.5 acres of land, complaint of illegal occupation of land, lease allotment, chief minister krishak accident welfare and correction in khatauni is available to the general public, he said. The revenue court computerised management system is functional for the settlement of land related disputes, through which the plaintiff and the defendant have the facility to view all the details regarding the status of their case online such as date of case, status of case, order etc. He said that an action plan is underway to link land records with Aadhaar, which will enable access to complete land details with a single click and help curb fraud in land transactions. Under the Swamitva Yojana, land surveys are being conducted using drones to generate accurate land records and GIS-based maps for rural planning. The aim is to ensure financial stability for people living in rural areas by enabling them to use their property as a financial asset to access loans and other financial benefits.

10 ULBs in UP selected for updation of land records under NAKSHA scheme
Lucknow, Ten urban local bodies in the state have been shortlisted under 'NAKSHA' programme for the creation of an up-to-date database of urban land records. According to Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Department of Land Resources , the 10 shortlisted ULBs in the state are Tanda , Nawabganj , Anoopshahr , Chitrakootdham , Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Jhansi, Chunar , Puranpur and Tilhar . "In the country, 152 such ULBs have been shortlisted. Of the 10 ULBs in UP, aerial mapping has been done in seven ULBs, and the work of ground verification has started. We want the maps of these 10 ULBs to be ready by September-October," Joshi said while speaking to reporters on Monday. He added that when these new land records are created, various land-related disputes will be solved. According to the web portal of the Department of Land Resources, NAKSHA is a one-year pilot programme launched by the department under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme. It aims to revolutionise urban land records across 157 ULBs in 27 states and three Union Territories, covering over 4,484 sq. km and benefiting over 1.5 crore citizens. Using cutting-edge aerial and field survey techniques, NAKSHA is building a comprehensive, GIS-integrated database of urban land parcels. According to the portal, the initiative would play a pivotal role in addressing this demand by enabling transparent property ownership, streamlining urban planning processes, and supporting better infrastructure development. It would also contribute to enhancing municipal revenue collection, strengthening disaster preparedness and response, and boosting public trust and private investment through reliable, legally certified land data. Joshi stated that 90 per cent of the people's assets in our country are in the form of land and property, and two-thirds of the disputes in courts are related to them. "If the land record system is good, then a lot of these can be resolved," he asserted. Later, in a statement issued, the UP government said that currently, around 22.27 per cent of the state's population resides in urban areas, and it is estimated that by 2031, this percentage will increase to approximately 40 per cent. Given this, the need for accurate and accessible urban land records is critical, it said.

26 cr people lifted out of poverty in 11 yrs of Modi govt: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi
Hubballi, June 9 (UNI) Marking the completion of 11 years of the Narendra Modi government, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday stressed that one of the most remarkable achievements of the administration has been lifting nearly 26 crore people out of multidimensional poverty. Addressing the media, Joshi said that detailed press meetings and nationwide publicity campaigns would be organised to highlight the government's transformative progress, especially over the last year of Modi's third term. "From 21.9 percent in 2013-14, multidimensional poverty has plummeted to just 5.18 percent today. This means that nearly 26 crore Indians have risen above extreme poverty in just over a decade. Such a milestone is unprecedented in India's recent history," Joshi said, emphasising that the data was corroborated by the World Bank. He attributed this phenomenal success to the government's wide-ranging welfare schemes, robust economic expansion, accelerated infrastructure development, and increased job opportunities, particularly in the private sector. Joshi further noted that only about 5 percent of the population remains below the poverty line, underscoring the sustained efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to improve the socio-economic conditions of millions of Indians.
