Louth beat Antrim to win All-Ireland Junior title

Yahoo2 days ago
Antrim were denied a first All-Ireland Junior Football Championship since 2022 after losing to Louth by 0-13 to 1-9 at Croke Park.
Bronagh Devlin netted a third-minute penalty for the Saffrons after Theresa Mellon was fouled within the square.
Aoife Russell cancelled out another swift point by Mellon, but Antrim extended their advantage through Omolara Dahunsi.
Dahunsi responded to back-to-back points from Louth forwards Russell and Ceire Nolan, and the Saffrons' advantage was cut further after Kate Flood and Shannen McLaughlin capitalised on Devlin's yellow card.
Louth held a 0-8 to 1-4 advantage at the break after a score by captain Aine Breen and two points from Flood.
Maria O'Neill got Antrim back on level terms early in the second half, but Eimear Byrne soon restored Louth's advantage.
Louth, who lost the 2024 decider to Fermanagh, put one hand on the title when Flood, Breen, Mia Duffy and Lucy White put them five points clear in the closing stages.
Antrim rallied late on through Ana Mulholland, Mellon and a late O'Neill point, but Louth had enough in hand to get over the line.

Wrexham confirm striker Kieffer Moore signing from Sheffield United

Kieffer Moore has become Wrexham's eighth summer signing after joining from Sheffield United in a £2million deal. The 32-year-old — his next birthday is on Friday — joins ahead of the opening weekend trip to Southampton after signing a three-year deal. 'I'm over the moon to join the club and can't wait to get started,' said Moore, who has twice previously won promotion from the Championship with Bournemouth and Ipswich Town, in a statement on their website. 'I want to be that experienced leader and bring a lot to the team. Advertisement 'My work ethic is one of my strongest assets and I want to be someone that can help drive the team forward.' Moore joins Conor Coady, Lewis O'Brien, Josh Windass, Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward in bringing much needed second-tier experience to the side. George Tomason and Liberato Cacace complete the roll-call of new signings. He spent last season at Sheffield United, helping Chris Wilder's side to the Championship play-off final where they lost to Sunderland at Wembley. With 49 international caps to his name, Moore becomes the eighth senior striker at the SToK Cae Ras. Wrexham are also chasing Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead in a possible £7.5m transfer. In a double-header friendly that saw Wrexham field a different XI in two fixtures against Dutch side FC Groningen on Saturday, Parkinson fielded Sam Smith and Ollie Palmer in a morning 1-0 defeat with Mo Faal coming off the bench on the hour. Windass and Hardie then played the full 90 minutes in the afternoon meeting against Groningen, a 3-1 defeat that saw the former net his first goal in Wrexham colours. Jay Rodriguez missed much of pre-season with a stress fracture in his foot that means he'll also be absent at Southampton this weekend.

'Fans go crazy for my biceps' - Norwich new-boy Topic

New Norwich City signing Mirko Topic said his intimidating physique has already impressed Canaries fans. The 24-year-old Serbian midfielder has four international caps and joined from Portuguese side Famalicao. Topic told BBC Radio Norfolk that supporters have reacted to a social media post published by the club. "After the club posted on Instagram, fans were getting crazy about my biceps and about my physicality. "They have been waiting for a 'number six' like me. I'm ready for that and can't wait for the Championship to start," he added. Topic began his professional career at hometown club Vojvodina in Serbia and he said his style of play will suit English football. "I'm very good for this league, I believe. I will adapt very quickly and I can't wait to feel the atmosphere at the games, to fight, to run. I know everything here is high intensity." Norwich supporters have been calling for the club to sign a defensive midfielder for some time. Despite finishing 13th during the 2024-25 Championship campaign, the team were second-highest scorers behind title winners Leeds United. It was a different story at the other end of the pitch though, conceding 68 goals and producing defensive displays littered with individual errors. Former Bristol City head coach Liam Manning was brought in to replace Dane Johannes Hoff Thorup, who was sacked in April. Norwich have made 11 signings this summer and there is an abundance of central midfield options, including former Manchester City player Jacob Wright. The 19-year-old joined following a successful loan spell during the 2024-25 campaign. Topic will compete for a place in that midfield and said he came to Norwich to fulfill a dream of one day playing in the Premier League. "I believe it's one step forward and one step away from the Premier League. "In the Championship it's not only long balls and running, teams try to play as well. It's very competitive, you can win against everyone and also you can lose. "Norwich want to be promoted this season and that is the highest ambition you can have." Topic said he is already feeling comfortable in a crowded Norwich dressing room. "The atmosphere is very nice. Vladan (Kovacevic) and Jakov (Medic) have helped me a lot, and Ante (Crnac) as well because they are Balkans guys. "We speak the same languages and that makes it easier for me to adapt quickly. "New players, new coach, maybe we will need time to connect but I think we will do it quickly." Norwich begin their Championship campaign on Saturday at home to Millwall (15:00 BST).
