Over 20 Yazidi ISIS victims identified through DNA testing
On Tuesday, Iraq's Ministry of Health identified 22 Yazidi victims killed by ISIS in Nineveh, nearly a decade after the group's massacre in the Sinjar region.
The atrocities date back to 2014, when ISIS overran Sinjar and the surrounding Yazidi-populated areas. Thousands of men were executed, while more than 5,000 women and children were abducted—many subjected to enslavement and abuse. Though some have been rescued, thousands remain unaccounted for.
Remains were matched to relatives using DNA analysis, which involved extracting genetic material from the victims' bones and comparing it with blood samples submitted by family members.
A full list of the identified individuals has been made public, and authorities urged families of the missing to continue providing reference samples to aid further identifications.

The ministry renewed its appeal for international intervention, cautioning that extreme shortages of food, clean water, and medicine are accelerating the crisis. Since early March, border crossings have remained largely closed, cutting off essential supplies to Gaza's 2.4 million residents. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that child malnutrition rates doubled between March and June as food and medicine disappeared from markets. The World Health Organization added that nearly 20% of children in Gaza City are acutely malnourished, warning that the blockade continues to paralyze the healthcare system and fuel preventable deaths. Humanitarian agencies have described the situation as 'one of Gaza's worst disasters.' According to the Health Ministry, 61,258 Palestinians have been killed and 152,045 injured since the start of Israeli military operations on October 7, 2023—many of them women and children. 'The operation resulted in the complete dismantling of the terrorist cell, as it was revealed that its members were involved in carrying out assassinations' against five Iraqi nationals, Idlib security chief Ghassan Mohammed Bakir said, as cited by the state-run SANA news agency. During the operation, a weapons depot containing explosive vests, bombs, sniper rifles, machine guns, and mortar shells was seized. 'A workshop dedicated to manufacturing and detonating explosives' was also located, according to Bakir. ISIS attacks in Syria have largely been focused on the Kurdish-held regions of north and east Syria, but attacks in areas held by the new Damascus-affiliated authorities remain rare. ISIS has continued to carry out attacks on Kurdish-led forces. On Wednesday, two Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters were killed in an ISIS attack in the eastern Deir ez-Zor province. Kurdish-led forces are also intensifying their counter-ISIS raids. A senior ISIS operative was captured in northeast Syria's (Rojava) Hasaka city on Wednesday, in an operation with support from the US-led global coalition.
