Over 20 Yazidi ISIS victims identified through DNA testing

Shafaq News2 days ago
Shafaq News – Baghdad
On Tuesday, Iraq's Ministry of Health identified 22 Yazidi victims killed by ISIS in Nineveh, nearly a decade after the group's massacre in the Sinjar region.
The atrocities date back to 2014, when ISIS overran Sinjar and the surrounding Yazidi-populated areas. Thousands of men were executed, while more than 5,000 women and children were abducted—many subjected to enslavement and abuse. Though some have been rescued, thousands remain unaccounted for.
Remains were matched to relatives using DNA analysis, which involved extracting genetic material from the victims' bones and comparing it with blood samples submitted by family members.
A full list of the identified individuals has been made public, and authorities urged families of the missing to continue providing reference samples to aid further identifications.

Awareness among youth: Babil launches open-air anti-drug exhibit

Shafaq News – Babil Iraq's Directorate for Drug and Psychotropic Substance Affairs in Babil launched on Thursday an open-air educational exhibit to raise public awareness about drug abuse, with a particular focus on protecting youth. The mobile exhibit, structured as a visual awareness convoy, features life-sized models of commonly abused substances—including crystal meth, Captagon, hashish, and heroin—as well as dramatized depictions of the stages of addiction, from initial use to full loss of control. 'This year, we wanted the display to be different—something that engages people directly and instills real awareness,' one officer involved in the initiative told Shafaq News. 'The goal isn't just arresting people. It's treatment, rehabilitation, and safe reintegration into society.' The exhibit also highlights Iraq's legal framework for drug rehabilitation, particularly Articles 39 and 40 of the Anti-Drug Law No. 50 of 2017. Article 40 allows users to voluntarily seek treatment without facing legal penalties—an important distinction officials say must be emphasized in public discourse. Information was also shared about free treatment centers available in the province.

Gaza hunger: 96 children among the dead

Shafaq News – Gaza Gaza's Ministry of Health confirmed, on Thursday, four additional deaths from famine and malnutrition over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 197, including 96 children. The ministry renewed its appeal for international intervention, cautioning that extreme shortages of food, clean water, and medicine are accelerating the crisis. Since early March, border crossings have remained largely closed, cutting off essential supplies to Gaza's 2.4 million residents. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that child malnutrition rates doubled between March and June as food and medicine disappeared from markets. The World Health Organization added that nearly 20% of children in Gaza City are acutely malnourished, warning that the blockade continues to paralyze the healthcare system and fuel preventable deaths. Humanitarian agencies have described the situation as 'one of Gaza's worst disasters.' According to the Health Ministry, 61,258 Palestinians have been killed and 152,045 injured since the start of Israeli military operations on October 7, 2023—many of them women and children. In the past 24 hours alone, Israeli airstrikes killed 100 people and wounded 603 others. The ministry also documented casualties among those seeking aid, with at least 1,706 killed and more than 12,030 injured.

Syria dismantles suspected ISIS cell accused of killing Iraqis

Also in Syria ENKS urges Damascus to hold 'serious' talks with Rojava delegation Suspected ISIS attack kills two SDF fighters in east Syria SDF captures suspected senior ISIS operative in Hasaka Suspected ISIS attack injures three Asayish in east Syria A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syria's interior ministry said on Thursday that security forces arrested a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) cell in the northwestern Idlib province, accused of assassinating five Iraqi nationals. 'The operation resulted in the complete dismantling of the terrorist cell, as it was revealed that its members were involved in carrying out assassinations' against five Iraqi nationals, Idlib security chief Ghassan Mohammed Bakir said, as cited by the state-run SANA news agency. During the operation, a weapons depot containing explosive vests, bombs, sniper rifles, machine guns, and mortar shells was seized. 'A workshop dedicated to manufacturing and detonating explosives' was also located, according to Bakir. ISIS attacks in Syria have largely been focused on the Kurdish-held regions of north and east Syria, but attacks in areas held by the new Damascus-affiliated authorities remain rare. In June, a deadly bombing struck the Mar Elias Church in Damascus during Sunday mass. Two assailants opened fire on worshippers before detonating an explosive vest, killing 25 people and injuring 63 others. Damascus blamed ISIS for the attack. ISIS rose to power and swept through swathes of Syria in a brazen offensive in 2014, declaring a so-called 'caliphate.' But the militants were territorially defeated in 2019 as local Syrian and Kurdish fighters, supported by a US-led international coalition, clawed back territory from the group. ISIS has continued to carry out attacks on Kurdish-led forces. On Wednesday, two Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters were killed in an ISIS attack in the eastern Deir ez-Zor province. Kurdish-led forces are also intensifying their counter-ISIS raids. A senior ISIS operative was captured in northeast Syria's (Rojava) Hasaka city on Wednesday, in an operation with support from the US-led global coalition.
