Reward for reporting waste dumping gets heftier
In a measure aimed at encouraging the public to report instances of waste dumping to the authorities, the Local Self-Government department has removed the clause regarding the maximum amount that can be awarded for those who report such cases with evidence.
As per an order issued by the department on Thursday, those who report such cases will get one-fourth of the fine amount imposed. The government has decided to remove the current maximum limit of ₹2,500.
Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh said in a press release on Friday that with the revised order, those who report serious crimes with evidence will get a higher reward. He directed the local self-government institutions to ensure that everyone who provides information with evidence gets a reward. Haritha Karma Sena members, National Service Scheme volunteers, Student Police Cadets, and college students will also be made part of this monitoring system.
More complaints are being received on the WhatsApp number 9446700800. A special control room has been set up in the Principal Directorate of the LSGD to monitor this properly and take action. So far, 8,674 complaints regarding garbage dumping in public places have been received through the WhatsApp number. Out of this, 5,361 complaints received with accurate information have been accepted. In 4,525 cases, action has been taken, including removing the garbage (84.41%). In 439 cases received with details and evidence of the garbage dumpers, a fine of ₹33.5 lakh has been imposed. Prosecution proceedings have also been initiated against 31 people based on the information received through WhatsApp. The highest number of complaints is reported from Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The least is in Wayanad district.
Individuals and institutions are currently fined up to ₹5,000 for dumping or burning waste. Those who discharge sewage into public places or waterbodies are liable to a fine of ₹5,000 to ₹50,000. Dumping waste in waterbodies is an offence punishable by a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 and imprisonment of six months to one year. The penalty for selling banned plastic is a fine of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000. Illegal transportation of waste or septage in vehicles will result in action including confiscation of the vehicle.

Bangladesh says attacks on Tagore's property an 'altercation between two visitors and caretaker'
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh stated that the attacks on Rabindra Kachari Bari were a result of altercation between two visitors and the caretaker of the property. The statement added that two arrests have been made pertaining to the incident. "Attention of the Government of Bangladesh has been drawn to a reported incident in the government-owned property related to the revered Bengali Nobel laureate, poet Rabindranath Tagore , in the district of Sirajganj in Bangladesh. The incident centered around an altercation between two visitors and the Caretaker of the property a few days back which is managed by the Department of Archaeology of the Government," as per the statement. "Following the incident, a criminal case had already been filed with the local Police on 10th June. Two persons had also been arrested in this connection. A local inquiry board has also been formed by the District administration. Appropriate legal actions are being taken by the local administration," the statement read. The statement further said that in Bangladesh, there is no scope for any divisive attempt to fuel controversy on the attacks' incident. "Rabindra Kachari Bari, Shahjadpur, Sirajgonj is a protected monument by the Bangladesh government. Every year, thousands of visitors from home and abroad come to visit the place associated with the poet's memory", the statement said.

CBI nabs accused who provided SIM cards, mule bank accounts to cyber frauds
MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Kalyan resident as part of its crackdown on a cybercrime syndicate specialising in perpetrating investment frauds, and conducted multi-state searches at 10 locations, including in the city. The agency's actions were part of its probe into an investment fraud case in which funds worth ₹160 crore were allegedly defrauded from victims. A special court sent the arrested accused to judicial custody. The syndicate allegedly duped gullible victims by entrapping them with the lucrative offer of shares of reputed listed companies at discounted rates and then misappropriated their funds, CBI officials said on Friday. The accused, identified as Pratik Tanpure, a resident of Kalyan, was arrested by the CBI after his alleged role as a logistics provider to such criminal networks surfaced in its probe into an investment fraud case against the syndicate. CBI's probe revealed that the accused was allegedly actively involved in providing pre-activated SIM cards and mule bank accounts to cybercrime networks, thereby enabling and sustaining their illegal operations, agency officials said. During a search at his premises, the CBI recovered incriminating material in his possession, which is being assessed for their evidentiary value, agency officials said. Apart from the premises of the arrested accused, the agency also carried out searches at nine other locations in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra, Hisar (Haryana), Delhi and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) as part of its crackdown, internally known as Operation Chakra-V. The CBI's case pertains to an organised, orchestrated fraud wherein unsuspecting individuals were allegedly cheated through a fraudulent mobile application and WhatsApp groups, the agency officials said. The perpetrators deceitfully lured innocent investors by promising shares of reputed listed companies at discounted rates. Once the victims invested their hard-earned money, the accused misappropriated the funds, causing significant financial loss to the investors, the officials said. During the coordinated searches, the CBI seized digital and documentary evidence from the premises of the accused persons, unearthing the modus operandi employed to dupe innocent investors, the officials said, adding that 'Operation Chakra-V' underscores the central agency's unwavering commitment to dismantling cyber-crime syndicates and infrastructure supporting commission of such offences. Last September, as part of a similar crackdown, the CBI had arrested 26 alleged cybercriminals, including 10 in Pune, who used illegal call centres across four Indian cities to cheat people globally, especially in the United States. In the same month, the CBI also busted another transnational cybercrime network by arresting its key operator from Mumbai.
