What we learned from the Irish League this week - comeback wins, hat-tricks, London buses and same old Cooper

Yahoo6 days ago
After several months of anticipation the Irish League was back with a bang last weekend, although coming the final whistle after the first round of fixtures a few fans might have been calling for a restart.
With Larne and Linfield's extended run in the Conference League there was a double helping of Irish Premiership fixtures on Saturday and Sunday.
We had goals, drama, supporters complaining about refereeing decisions once more, three away wins on Saturday and three homes wins on Sunday.

Here are the key points to takeaway from the first round of fixtures...
The Irish League has always had an element of unpredictability about it, and that was served up perfectly again at Seaview on Saturday.
Declan Caddell's young Crusaders side looked to be heading towards a superb three points after they cut through the Carrick Rangers defence like the proverbial hot knife through butter racing into a three-goal lead inside 32 minutes.
But Stephen Baxter, on his first return to Seaview as a manager since leaving the Hatchetmen's hot seat, inspired the visitors to an incredible comeback as a brace apiece from Jack Scott and Danny Gibson either side of the break secured them was was an unlikely victory a one point.
The old saying about London buses was on everyone's minds at Mourneview Park on Saturday.
With only three goals in his previous 87 appearances Donal Rocks probably wasn't expected to be Ballymena United's two-goal hero against Glenavon.
But the tough-tackling midfielder showed his quality with a brace against the Lurgan Blues, including a stunning long-range effort that had his manager stunned afterwards.
"When he hit the shot I was ready to scream at him, but then I started celebrating," said Jim Ervin.
Ahead of the new season Bangor boss Lee Feeney insisted his side weren't going to throw away their chance in the Irish Premiership as they returned to the topflight for the first time since 2009.
Their home form is going to be crucial and if Sunday's win over Cliftonville is anything to go by not too many sides will fancy a trip to the Seaside.
Just like they did in the Irish Cup last season Feeney's men took the game to the Reds picking up a very valuable three points as they kicked off the new campaign in style.
While the likes of Coleraine, Glentoran and Larne have been mentioned as potential champions in some circles Linfield showed why they shouldn't be written off.
The Blues swept aside Dungannon Swifts at Windsor Park with Kieran Offord bagging himself an opening day hat-trick.
His goals will be crucial for David Healy's men this season if they are to mount a successful title defence.
It was hardly a surprise to see Joel Cooper pop up with the winning goal for Coleraine on Sunday.
Last season's Player of the Year was signed by the Bannsiders to be the difference maker and he proved his worth on his home debut against Larne.
Ruaidhri Higgins' men looked like they may have to settle for a point in the opener until Cooper's telling intervention with four minutes to go as he produced a typically clinical finish to secure all three points...the first of many no doubt!

Bears QB Caleb Williams receives compelling take from ESPN analyst

Bears QB Caleb Williams receives compelling take from ESPN analyst originally appeared on The Sporting News Caleb Williams quickly erased doubts about his comfort with the offense under new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson. He completed 6 of 10 passes, including a touchdown, in Chicago's 38-0 win over the Buffalo Bills last weekend. Entering his second season in the NFL and under a new head coach, Williams faces pressure to show real progress, especially with an offensive-minded coach like Johnson. He and his teammates are still adjusting to a new offense during practices and the preseason. Despite the national media's concern over Williams, one analyst is advising Bears fans to be excited about the future of the USC product under Johnson. Can Caleb Williams take the next step? ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes appeared on "SportsCenter," noting that Williams was able to run Johnson's offense and show glimpses of how it's meant to function, pointing out that there were shades of how the Bears head coach ran the system during his time with the Detroit Lions. "It was backups," Kimes said. "I feel like you always have to say that in the preseason, but it feels like the Bears fans should be pretty excited based on what they saw. This was the first glimpse we saw of the marriage between Ben Johnson, new head coach, play caller, and Caleb Williams. It was interesting. You saw some of the same hallmarks of the Ben Johnson offense in Detroit: Caleb was under center, condensed formations, misdirection, all that jazz." Additionally, Kimes offered a take regarding how Williams looks from season No. 1 to season No. 2 in Chicago. MORE:Colin Cowherd sounds off on Bears QB Caleb Williams' showing against Bills "You also saw Caleb look as comfortable as I have seen him in the NFL," Kimes added. "We showed earlier the scene ball that he ripped to Cole Kmet. He saw the safety drop, middle of the field open, ripped it. That's the Caleb Williams that was the No. 1 overall pick for a reason. That's the one Bears want to see—a guy who looks comfortable, accurate, decisive. Very promising start."

NY Giants injury updates: Two offensive stars returning to practice

EAST RUTHERFORD - Fans of the New York Giants can exhale: star left tackle Andrew Thomas is back. Thomas began training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continued to work his way through foot surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury suffered last October. The Giants activated Thomas on Tuesday and he will participate in practice, likely on an individual basis to start, but he is in line to protect Russell Wilson's blindside on Week 1 in Landover against the Commanders. Star wide receiver Malik Nabers and rookie running back Cam Skattebo are also returning to practice, per Brian Daboll. Atalanta go for Krstovic, tired of waiting for Muniz and Fulham

As previously reported by Football Italia, Atalanta have lost patience with Fulham over Rodrigo Muniz after the price was raised to €50m, and are instead closing a deal with Lecce for Nikola Krstovic. La Dea had chosen Muniz as their ideal replacement for Capocannoniere Mateo Retegui, but they had set a deadline and were running out of time. (Photo by) With Fulham asking for circa €50m to release the striker, that was considered beyond the pale and put an end to the negotiations. Now multiple sources agree that Atalanta have decided the proposal for Muniz was more than sufficient, so they are turning their focus elsewhere and won't raise the bid any more. EPA-EFE/ABBONDANZA SCURO LEZZI The primary target is now Krstovic, who has already told Lecce that he wants to make the next step in his career. There had been links with Roma if Artem Dovbyk was sold, while Leeds United had also made an approach, but Atalanta can promise Champions League football this season. As we had already reported, there was contact between Atalanta and Lecce to lay the groundwork, so the time has come to step on the gas. Krstovic is 25 years old and scored 11 goals with five assists in 37 Serie A appearances last season.
