CHICAGO (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians placed shortstop Gabriel Arias on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain before Tuesday night's game at the Chicago Cubs and recalled infielder Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus.
Rocchio was in Cleveland's lineup at shortstop and batting ninth for the series opener at Wrigley Field.

Arias was taken off the field on a cart after getting hurt in the third inning of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The team said X-rays were negative and Arias underwent an MRI on Monday.
'It looks like we got pretty lucky," manager Stephen Vogt said. "It looks like a moderate ankle sprain. So we'll have more information on him when we get back (to Cleveland on Friday), but it sounds like he avoided some major injury, which is great.'
Arias is batting .231 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 77 games in his first full season as a starter.
Arias went deep into the hole to field a grounder by Masyn Winn with one out, but caught his left spike on the grass and awkwardly rolled his ankle. The ball wound up in left field for a single. Arias immediately grabbed his leg and remained down for several minutes.

Rocchio opened the season with the Guardians, but was optioned to Triple-A on May 12 after batting only .165 with eight RBIs in 35 games. In 41 games with Columbus, he hit .252 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.

Guardians' Gold Glove OF Called 'Perfect Fit' As Giants Trade Target
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco Giants are clinging to postseason hope, and once again, they're a step or two behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. While the Giants have made big moves over the last few months, they need to continue to turn the heat up in the offseason or else the Dodgers and Padres will continue to run the National League West. Nick San Miguel of Around the Foghorn recently suggested the Giants could swing xa trade for Cleveland Guardians Gold Glove outfielder Steven Kwan in the offseason after whiffing at the trade deadline. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 9: C.J. Kayfus #63 of the Cleveland Guardians high fives teammate Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians after hitting a home run in the sixth inning of the game against... CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 9: C.J. Kayfus #63 of the Cleveland Guardians high fives teammate Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians after hitting a home run in the sixth inning of the game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on August 9, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. More"The SF Giants were sellers at the trade deadline, but if they were buyers, they would have been a perfect fit for both starting pitcher Joe Ryan and outfielder Steven Kwan," San Miguel wrote. "They can still make a run at both players in the offseason. "Kwan has been great for Cleveland as well. He is slashing .281/.342/.394 with nine home runs and 39 runs batted in. The Los Gatos native has won three straight Gold Gloves and would be a perfect upgrade over Mike Yastrzemski, who was recently traded to the Royals, in right field. The two players would fill pressing needs on the team and just so happen to be Bay Area natives. It sounds almost too good to be true." Kwan would be the perfect outfield option for the Giants to pursue if the Guardians are still looking to shop him in the offseason. It seems a bit unlikely that he's traded because the Guardians have a few years of team control left and they're firmly in the American League postseason race. Still, if Kwan ends up on the trade block again, the Giants have the prospect capital to go get a deal done. Adding Kwan to the top of the lineup would make San Francisco a World Series contender without a doubt. More MLB: Yankees' Gerrit Cole Provides Encouraging 5-Word Injury Update

MLB drops plan to start World Series early if both League Championship Series end by Game 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball dropped its plan to start the World Series early if both League Championship Series are short, announcing Tuesday that this year's Fall Classic will start on Oct. 24. MLB last year said Game 1 would move up from Oct. 25 to Oct. 22 if the LCS ended by Oct. 19, when both leagues were scheduled to be through Game 5. But the New York Mets won Game 5 of the NL Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6. Since the LCS expanded to best-of-seven in 1985, both leagues ended in four or five games in 1989, 2001, 2002, 2014 and 2022. Last year was the first in which MLB announced a flexible schedule. Game 7 of this year's World Series would be on Nov. 1. The World Series ended in November in 2001, '09, '10, '15, '16, '17, '21 and '22 and '23, going as late as Nov. 5 in 2022. The World Series is scheduled to start on a Friday for the fifth straight year. Before 2022, the Series had not started on a Friday since 1915. NL Division Series will have an extra scheduled off day between Games 1 and 2, a format that allows a team to have the same pitchers start Games 1 and 4, and Games 2 and 5 on normal four days' rest. Last year, AL Division Series had the extra off day. All four best-of-three Wild Card Series are scheduled for consecutive days from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the side of the higher seed. Twelve teams make the playoffs under the format that began in 2022. The top two teams in each league get first-round byes, while the No. 3 seed faces No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5. The higher seed will be home in each best-of-three series. In the best-of-five Division Series, the top seed plays the 3-vs.-6 winner and the No. 2 seed plays the 4-vs.-5 winner. The Division Series will have the familiar format of the higher seed home for Games 1 and 2, and, if necessary, Game 5. AL Division Series also will start Oct. 4-5 followed by travel day and switch to the other sites for games on Oct. 7-8. Game 5s would be Oct. 10. NL Division Series start on Oct. 4, have an off day followed by a game on Oct. 5, then switch to the other cities on Oct. 8-9. After another travel day, Game 5s would be played Oct. 11. ___

Grealish looks to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Man City
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — England midfielder Jack Grealish will look to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Grealish, one of the poster boys of English soccer, became the country's most expensive player after a 2021 move from Aston Villa to City for 100 million pounds (then $139 million). He was a regular pick in City's historic 2022-23 season when the team won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. However, Grealish has fallen out of favor over the last two seasons, not even making City's squad for the recent Club World Cup, and has chosen to move to Everton for a season ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans." The loan switch removes not only a high-earner from City's wage bill but also one of the many attacking midfielders built up in City's stacked squad. Grealish often had a free, roaming role when making his name at Villa, but had to be more disciplined and restricted as a left-sided forward in City manager Pep Guardiola's system of play. Everton manager David Moyes will try to get the best out of Grealish again, with the team's first match of the Premier League season at Leeds on Monday. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,' Grealish said. ___
