Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025
Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has solidified its position as one of Malaysia's top investment destinations, recording RM10.9 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of 2025, surpassing its total for the entire year of 2024. According to the latest investment performance report by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Sabah now ranks third nationally in total investments, behind Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
Advertisement Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) led the surge, contributing RM6.6 billion or 61pc of the total, while Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) accounted for RM4.29 billion (39pc). The manufacturing sector emerged as the top contributor with RM7.3 billion in investments, making Sabah the number one recipient of manufacturing investments in Malaysia for the quarter. Of the manufacturing total, RM6.59 billion (91.3pc) came from foreign sources, reflecting robust international confidence in Sabah's business environment. Domestic investment in the sector amounted to RM711 million (9.7pc). The services sector drew RM2.83 billion, while the primary sector attracted RM757.1 million. Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe described the milestone as a testament to investor confidence in Sabah's economic prospects and pro-business policies. 'Despite global economic uncertainties and geopolitical pressures, Sabah remains a competitive and trusted investment hub. This performance shows our strategic policies are yielding tangible results,' he said. He added that the state government remains fully committed to strengthening Sabah's investment ecosystem and welcomes both foreign and local investors in contributing to sustainable and inclusive economic growth. 'The State Government will continue to create an enabling environment for investors and push forward with our industrial development agenda,' Phoong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘GST not suitable now, would burden the poor'
Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - Getty Images/iStockphoto LUMUT: The government is not ready to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as it would affect all segments of society, particularly the poor, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said GST is a broad-based tax that would be applied uniformly to all consumers, regardless of income, including fishermen, smallholders, or street cleaners. Advertisement 'GST taxes everybody. While it is efficient and straightforward, just six per cent across the board, I must ask, if everyone has to pay six per cent, why should the poor and the unemployed be taxed as well?' he said when closing the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 here today. Anwar said that although the opposition has suggested GST as a better option, the government has chosen to postpone its implementation to avoid burdening the people, who are still struggling with the rising cost of living. 'That's why we say we're not ready for GST. If, one day, the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more, then by all means, implement GST. But for now, I'm calling for it to be postponed, don't turn it into a political issue,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ministry engaging laundromat operators on subsidised LPG
A group representing laundromat operators has urged the government to allow them to use subsidised LPG cylinders for their dryers. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The domestic trade and cost of living ministry is currently engaging with laundromat operators who are demanding they be allowed to use subsidised liquefied petroleum gas. In a Facebook post, its minister, Armizan Mohd Ali, said they took note of the industry's concerns, but any decision on the matter must take into account 'numerous factors'. 'There is a need to adopt a targeted approach rather than implement a blanket policy without a monitoring mechanism.' Armizan said he had informed Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe about this matter after he raised the issue. A few days ago, a group representing laundromat operators had urged the government to allow them to use subsidised LPG cylinders. This was in addition to micro- and small-sized food and beverage traders. The Malay Unified Laundry Association (Mula) said it was disappointed that the domestic trade and cost of living ministry's review of the Control of Supplies Regulations (Amendment) 2021 pertaining to LPG cylinders was only focussing on these F&B traders. It said the laundromat sub-sector mostly comprised small- and medium-sized enterprises that depended on the subsidised gas tanks for their dryers. Currently, any business using over 42kg of LPG at any one time must apply for a scheduled controlled goods permit. Commercial LPG cylinders cost nearly RM70 each – almost three times the rate of subsidised gas tanks. Armizan recently said the 2021 regulations would be reviewed with a focus on the needs of micro- and small-sized F&B businesses, and to provide greater clarity. Until the review is finalised, no legal action will be taken against micro- and small-sized businesses in the F&B sector regarding the use of subsidised cooking gas tanks.

One-year training levy waiver from 2026: PM
Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - pix Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time, the Government has announced a one-year exemption from training levy payments for all private educational institutions, effective Jan 1, 2026. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the exemption covers all institutions, including preschools, primary and secondary schools, vocational education centres, institutions of higher learning and general training institutes. Advertisement 'After receiving numerous views from (private) education and training institutions, the Madani Government has sought the best solution to train our young people. 'This (exemption) is intended to allow them to focus on improving quality,' he said when officiating at the highlight of the National Training Weeks (NTW) 2025 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium grounds, here, Saturday. Also present was Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. At the same time, the Prime Minister directed the Secretaries-General of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) to monitor and ensure that these training institutions offer quality training following the granting of the levy waiver. 'Also monitor private companies with high profits to ensure they give something back to their workers,' he added. Under the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad Act 2001 (Act 612), employers are required to pay a levy to the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), an agency under the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma), for training and skills development. Anwar also stressed the need to train the younger generation in new fields using current methods, in line with the Madani Economic Framework, and not remain stuck in outdated training approaches. He said these include areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and chip manufacturing. 'Malaysia's semiconductor industry is not small — the country is regarded as a hub and base for the Asean region. Nearly all of the world's largest semiconductor and AI companies are based in Malaysia,' he said. Meanwhile, Kesuma, in a statement, said the levy exemption amounts to RM46 million. It said the exemption involves 1,668 educational institutions and is valid from Jan 1 to Dec 31 next year. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
