An anti-PM rally that began as disquiet with urban renewal
PETALING JAYA : The 'Turun Anwar' rally to be held later today has been billed as the largest anti-government rally since Anwar Ibrahim was appointed prime minister in 2022.
Rally organisers say they expect up to 300,000 participants, but police estimates put it at some 10,000 to 15,000.
A similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300 people. However, today's rally will feature several prominent politicians, including former prime ministers Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim as well as former PKR MP Tian Chua.
Yet, despite the recent back and forth between Anwar's supporters and detractors in the past few days, the push for Anwar's removal was not the initial goal of the rally.
In February, PAS Youth announced plans to hold a rally to protest against the Urban Renewal Act, which was expected to be tabled on July 31, claiming that it would displace minorities.
But in June, the wing decided to rebrand the rally, shifting the focus to a demand for Anwar's resignation, based on issues arising from decisions made by the prime minister.
The change was mocked by a PKR Sabah leader who accused PAS Youth of shifting the goalposts due to the lukewarm response it received to the planned anti-URA rally.
On Thursday, Perikatan Nasional Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the rally was specifically about Anwar and not aimed at toppling the unity government.
Leaders from PKR have criticised the organisers, saying any change in government should be done democratically – via the Dewan Rakyat – rather than through street protests.
On Friday, PKR Tenggara chief Fakharuddin Moslim said Anwar does not make unilateral decisions and that government policies were a collective decision
FMT columnist Tajuddin Rasdi also wondered who could succeed Anwar should the opposition get what they wished for, suggesting that there is no worthy candidate to take over the reins.
On the other hand, Anwar seems to be taking this matter in his stride.
The prime minister was a student activist and the inspiration for anti-government rallies during the Reformasi period following his unceremonious sacking from government in 1998 and he also supported the Bersih rallies over the past 18 years.
According to his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, Anwar has only expressed hope that the rally proceeds peacefully and in an orderly manner, and had even instructed the police to facilitate today's gathering.
Tunku Nashrul said the government's stance on the matter is in line with one of the Madani principles the administration espouses, 'celebrating democracy'.
In driving home the point on respecting such rights, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said he has ordered all public transport services, including KTM and RapidKL, to operate as usual tomorrow.
Loke even encouraged participants to use public transport.

Anwar wants MCMC to investigate Muhyiddin's denial of defending foreigners in RON95 subsidy issue
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate Pagoh Member of Parliament Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's denial regarding allegations that he defended the rights of foreigners in the issue of RON95 subsidy targeting. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated today that Anwar has also ordered appropriate action to be taken in this matter. 'The Prime Minister's Office has taken note of the denial statement by the Pagoh Member of Parliament regarding the allegation of defending the rights of foreigners in the issue of RON95 subsidy targeting. 'As a government that upholds transparency and accountability, the Prime Minister has instructed MCMC to investigate this matter and take appropriate action,' the statement said. Yesterday, Anwar was reported in the Dewan Rakyat to have said that he received a report that an opposition Member of Parliament had defended the right of foreigners to benefit from subsidy rationalisation. Following this, Muhyiddin, who is also a former Prime Minister, denied in a social media post that he had ever made any statement defending the rights of foreigners in the targeting of the RON95 subsidy. He said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) has always been consistent that the benefits of subsidy implementation should prioritise the interests of the people. Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has taken note of the matter and will take immediate and appropriate action based on existing legal provisions. 'The MCMC reminds the public not to misuse social media platforms to spread any unverified content,' the statement said. — Bernama

Reaffirming Malaysia's chip ambitions
by CIMB SECURITIES AT THE ASEAN Semiconductor Summit 2025 (ASEMIS), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz reinforced Malaysia's ambition to become a global semiconductor powerhouse under the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS). Launched in May 2024, the NSS aims to shift Malaysia beyond a 'Made in Malaysia' model to a 'Made by Malaysia' one by strengthening local capabilities in integrated circuit (IC) design, research and development (R&D), advanced packaging and nurturing homegrown champions across the value chain. NSS Progress Since its launch, the NSS has attracted RM63 billion in investments (RM58 billion foreign direct investment [FDI], RM5.2 billion domestic direct investment), led by high-impact projects from Infineon (opened world's largest 200mm silicon carbide power fab), Carsem (M) Sdn Bhd's advanced packaging technologies for artificial intelligence (AI) and energy efficiency, NXP Semiconductors NV's semiconductor products, Syntiant Corp's micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphone and sensors, and Plexus Corp' manufacture and re-manufacture of printed circuit boards. These investments underscore rising investor confidence in Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem. Building Local Champions Malaysia aims to develop 10 local semiconductor firms with revenues exceeding US$1 billion (RM4.24 billion) and 100 firms with revenues exceeding RM1 billion. The government has identified 13 Malaysian-based companies across the semiconductor value chain as key beneficiaries, including Carsem (Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd [MPI]), Inari Amertron Bhd, Pentamaster Corp Bhd, ViTrox Corp Bhd and Kellington Group Bhd. In addition, promising IC design and services firms like Oppstar Bhd, SkyeChip Sdn Bhd, Infinecs Systems Sdn Bhd and Experior are also being nurtured to spearhead Malaysia's next phase of semiconductor growth. Talent Development and Wages Uplift Over 30,000 high-skilled workers have been trained under NSS-linked programmes. Initiatives by Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST), TalentCorp (M) Bhd and the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) have led to wage gains of up to 20% for over 1,100 participants. The median manufacturing wage rose 6% year-on-year (YoY) to RM2,745 per month in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25). Strategic Funding and Support More than RM2 billion has been committed by government-linked investment companies (GLICs) (eg, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Retirement Fund Inc [KWAP]) and development banks via the GEAR-uP initiative. This complements a planned RM25 billion in total fiscal support under the NSS to accelerate R&D, ecosystem development and global partnerships. ASEAN Supply Chain Integration As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia is spearheading the ASEAN Integrated Semiconductor Supply Chain Framework to harmonise talent flows, fiscal incentives and infrastructure across member states. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the semiconductor associations of Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines aims to create a unified regional chip ecosystem. Conclusion Malaysia's transition from a back-end assebly base to a design-to-packaging semiconductor hub remains a work in progress. However, we are encouraged to see that the NSS is gaining investor traction, institutional support and regional momentum. With RM63 billion in committed investments, an increase in local champions and stronger ASEAN alignment, Malaysia is positioning itself as a neutral, indispensable node in the global chip supply chain. We see this as one of the key advantages in ensuring Malaysia remains an attractive destination for semiconductor manufacturing globally. Our current top picks in the Malaysian outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) sector are Inari Amertron ('Buy'; target price [TP]:RM2.20) and MPI ('Buy'; TP: RM30). We also like ViTrox ('Hold'; TP: RM3.80) for exposure to the Malaysian Automated Test Equipment (ATE) sector. Extracted from CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd's report dated July 25, 2025. Miti: Malaysia set for RM104b in 2025 investments, trade target unchanged despite global headwinds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has projected 2025's approved investments to amount to RM104 billion involving manufacturing and selected services sectors under the purview of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida). Its Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said this projection takes into account gross domestic product (GDP) forecast, projects currently under evaluation, and potential projects. 'Based on Mida's investment statistics, the first quarter of 2025 approved investments were RM89.8 billion, a 3.7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. 'Therefore, considering the increasing trend of investment applications to Mida, the investment outlook is expected to maintain positive for the whole of 2025,' he said in a written reply on the Parliament's website yesterday in response to Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) who asked for the government's 2025 investment projection as well as the measures to ensure that export and investment values are not severely affected by rising US tariffs and global geopolitical uncertainty. Tengku Zafrul said the projection remains unchanged for now as the tariff impact is mainly felt by companies that rely heavily on the US market. He added that Miti currently has no plans to revise its 2025 trade growth targets despite the US imposing a 19 per cent tariff. Miti will continue to monitor current developments, especially exports to the US market, and formulate appropriate mitigation strategies, he said. 'Trade performance is expected to experience a slight decline in the second half of 2025 due to reduced demand from the US following the tariff enforcement. 'A more significant impact is expected to be felt in the first quarter of 2026, when trade activity resumes post-tariff implementation,' he said. Miti had previously projected a 5 per cent rise in Malaysia's total trade value to RM3.01 trillion against RM2.87 trillion in 2024. Meanwhile, he said US President Donald Trump's latest announcement on the 19 per cent tariff rate has opened a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to remain competitive alongside other trading partners, especially among Asean member states with similar tariff rates. 'It should be emphasised that Malaysia successfully secured a lower tariff rate without having to compromise on core policies or national sovereignty,' he said. However, he acknowledged that the tariff rate will still have an impact on export and investment performance, and in turn, affect Malaysia's economy. In the long term, he said the imposition of high reciprocal tariffs will cause a global economic slowdown, including in Malaysia, due to rising prices and declining demand, which will indirectly affect Malaysia's economic growth rate and the global economy in general. — Bernama
