Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen pulls out of the US Open after elbow surgery

Yahoo7 days ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen withdrew from the U.S. Open on Monday, two days after announcing she had arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow because of 'persistent pain.'
The sixth-ranked Zheng was coming off a first-round loss at Wimbledon last month.
'Over the past months, I've been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches,' the right-handed 22-year-old from China said on social media Saturday. 'Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away.'
Zheng said she anticipated her recovery would take months, so the exit from the year's last Grand Slam tournament was not a surprise. The U.S. Open begins Aug. 24.
She was replaced in the field by France's Leolia Jeanjean.

Pedulla Reveals Galatasaray Have Made ‘Massive Offer' For Inter Milan Linked PSG Star – Adds ‘Man City Also Eyeing Up A Deal'

Alfredo Pedulla reports that Galatasaray have made Galatasaray a massive offer, whilst Man City are also considering a deal. Pedulla reported, via FCInter1908, that there is a real chance Donnarumma could leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer. As things stand, Gianluigi Donnarumma still has not signed a new contract with PSG. And as La Repubblica report, talks between the Italian international and the Champions League winners have not really taken off. Donnarumma wants a wage increase from €10 million net per season to €12 million net. On the other hand, PSG are aiming lower than that. Inter Milan and Juventus have been persistently linked with a move to bring Donnarumma back to Serie A if he is to be available. However, the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri are far from the only clubs eyeing up the Italy captain's situation. Pedulla: 'Galatasaray Have Made Donnarumma A Massive Offer, Man City Also Keen' FLORENCE, ITALY – OCTOBER 08: Gianluigi Donnarumma of Italy looks on prior to the Italy training session at Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano on October 08, 2024 in Florence, Italy. (Photo by) Alfredo Pedulla reports that the next few days will be 'crucial' for Donnarumma's future. 'There's still no agreement on a contract extension, with his deal set to run out.' 'In fact, there's still a gap. So much so that Paris Saint-Germain are hedging their bets by targeting Lille's Chevalier, who's valued at €40 million.' And Pedulla notes that 'there's a lot of movement' on the Donnarumma front. 'Galatasaray, having settled the Osimhen issue, have made him a massive wage offer,' he reports. 'And they're ready to negotiate with PSG for a deal.' 'The keeper appreciates the Turkish club's effort,' adds Pedulla. 'But he's incline to wait.' 'Galatasaray have also sounded out Ederson, whose contract with City runs out next summer. He never had a chance of joining Napoli, but could interest other clubs.' 'Manchester City themselves are also monitoring Donnarumma,' Pedulla reports. 'That could be key.' 'Despite having reached an agreement to bring Trafford back from Burnely.' 'The English club have asked to be informed. And Guardiola is crazy about Donnarumma.' However, Pedulla cautions that 'Italian clubs, after having asked for information in the last few months, are currently holding back.'

Ahmed Hassan leaves Le Havre

Ahmed Hassan (32) has left Le Havre AC, just six months after joining the club on a free transfer. The Egyptian forward's contract at Rio Ave expired last summer. Without a club for several months, he pitched up at Le Havre in January. Signing a short-term deal, he was brought in to secure the club's top-flight status. Having accomplished that mission, he has now made a swift departure. After arriving at the Normand club, Hassan scored three goals in 16 appearances, earning the club seven points in the process. Those goals were crucial as Le Havre secured their survival in the top-flight in the final minute of the final day of the Ligue 1 season. Officialising his departure, HAC said that the Egypt international had 'completed his mission' at the club by helping them reach their objective. Two of his goals came in slender wins over RC Lens and Lille OSC, the other coming in a 1-1 draw against AS Monaco. Hassan is now once again a free agent. GFFN | Luke Entwistle
