In the world of electric vehicles, there is Tesla—and then there is everyone else. Over the past decade, Elon Musk's brainchild has transformed from a Silicon Valley curiosity into a global automotive powerhouse, reshaping not just how the world drives but how it thinks about mobil ity, energy, and innovation. Now, as Tesla prepares for its long-awaited entry into India, the question is no longer whether it will succeed, but how big that success might be.
From Disruption to Domination
Tesla's story is equal parts engineer ing brilliance, marketing wizardry, and audacious vision. Founded in 2003, the company endured a series of near-death experiences before its Model S seduced Wall Street and Silicon Valley alike. Today, with a market cap rivaling the world's biggest carmakers combined, Tesla leads global EV sales by a wide margin. It has also become a cultural icon, synony mous with clean tech, performance, and futuristic design.
From the USD 35,000 Model 3 to the premium Model X, and with gigafactories across continents, Tesla's model of vertical integration—from battery production to software control—has become the blueprint for modern auto manufacturing. Its Autopilot software, supercharging network, and over-the-air updates are years ahead of most rivals.
Cracking India: A Puzzle In Progress
Yet, despite its global footprint, India has remained a conspicuous blank spot on Tesla's map. Until now. In early 2024, Tesla resumed high-level talks with Indian government officials, culmi nating in policy concessions that could reshape India's EV ecosystem. The govern ment agreed to reduce import duties for electric cars—under specific investment thresholds—and fast-tracked approvals for Tesla's proposed plant in Gujarat. According to insiders, Tesla plans to initially im port vehicles—likely the Model 3 and Model Y—before setting up local manufacturing and a battery ecosystem. This India pivot comes as global EV growth shows signs of plateauing.
China, Tesla's second-largest market, is becoming f iercely competitive with BYD and others eating into its lead. The U.S. EV market, while robust, is grappling with affordability concerns and charging anxieties. For Tesla, India offers untapped potential: a rising middle class, government-backed EV incentives, and an auto market poised to become the world's third-largest.
Opportunities and Obstacles
India's appeal is obvious. With a 2030 target of 30 per cent EV penetration and a push for Make-in-India localization, the policy environment is gradually aligning with Tesla's expansion goals. The newly launched PM E-DRIVE scheme, worth INR 10,900 crore, along with a battery PLI (Pro duction Linked Incentive) program, could provide a launchpad for global EV brands. But Tesla's India foray won't be friction less. Price sensitivity, limited charging infrastructure, and a deeply entrenched ICE (internal combustion engine) ecosys tem remain significant challenges.
Even among EV adopters, two-wheelers and three-wheelers dominate segments where Tesla has no play. Moreover, India's supply chain resil ience has come under scrutiny following China's restriction on rare earth exports, critical to EV motors. For a company that thrives on control, Tesla will need to navi gate complex regulatory, logistical, and geopolitical terrain.
"Tesla is only interested in opening a showroom till now. They want to sell their car in India. There is no further development about Tesla," said Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaras wamy.
Recently, the Minister launched the portal that will enable foreign electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to submit their applications to manufacture EVs in India.
Analysing Tesla's entry in India, Ravindra Patki, Managing Partner, Vector Consulting Group, says,
"Tesla thrives on limited SKUs and high volumes for efficiency, whereas Indian consumers expect variety and value. At this price point, they won't get the volumes needed to justify their global operating model. The real opportunity lies in the mass market, not luxury—but to play there, Tesla will need to localise aggressively and rethink its one size-fits-all strategy."
As per Nikhil Dhaka, VP, Primus Partners, While Tesla may not dominate the EV market right away, its presence alone elevates expectations around quality, technology, and design. It also brings attention to gaps in our current ecosystem, whether it's charging infrastructure or component localization. Though the entry is not without challenges.
Dhaka says, "Tesla's current models remain out of reach for most Indian consumers, and high import duties continue to limit afford ability."
The brand is entering a competitive landscape, where players like Tata, Mahindra, and BYD are already establishing strong EV portfolios. Tesla's suc cess will hinge on how quickly it can localize and adapt its pricing strategy.
According to Srihari Mulgund, Partner and New Age-Mobility Leader, EY-Parthenon, "Limited initial localization could make cost competitiveness difficult in a price-sensitive market. India's EV infrastructure, especially charging networks, still needs considerable development. Regulatory complexities may pose hurdles to smooth market entry, and Tesla will also face stiff competition from estab lished luxury EV players like BMW and Mercedes."
He remains hopeful that it can significantly boost local manufacturing by integrating Indian suppliers into its global supply chain, while also tapping into India's strong engineering talent for R&D and innovation. The brand's presence is likely to accelerate the growth of EV in frastructure and policy support, and appeal to a new generation of aspirational, sustainability focused luxury car buyers.
The Musk Factor
No Tesla story is complete without Elon Musk. His India ambitions go back over a decade, with periodic tweets teasing a launch. But this time, there's substance. In a recent post, Musk confirmed plans to visit India in 2025 for the inauguration of Tesla's first manufacturing site. "Looking forward to doing exciting things in India," he wrote, sparking speculation about partnerships, investments, and even the pos sibility of a localized "Model India." Musk's knack for leveraging government engagement, media momentum, and consumer anticipation could be Tesla's biggest advantage.
If he pulls it off, Tesla could do for India's EV industry what it did globally— make electric aspirational, cool, and inevitable. After failed attempts in 2017-2020 to enter India, Tesla is testing the waters again in India with two showrooms set to open in July in Mumbai and Delhi, each. It remains to be seen if Tesla will be second-time lucky.
A Catalyst Moment
Tesla's India entry isn't just about selling cars. It's about rewriting the rules of the Indian auto game. It could catalyze faster EV adoption, ac celerate infrastructure develop ment, and spark competition among domestic and global play ers. For Indian startups, suppli ers, and investors, Tesla's arrival could open new opportunities across clean tech, mobility, and energy storage. India, often dubbed the "last big auto market," is now set to become Tesla's next big bet. And if history is any guide, Musk doesn't play small.

Elon Musk helped found a city for SpaceX employees in southern Texas. Starbase was incorporated in May 2025 and is the base of a rocket program that aims to reach Mars. SpaceX employees run the city, which has itself sparked controversy among some locals. Elon Musk hasn't only made his mark on the federal government — he's making himself known in local Texas bureaucracy, too. Residents in southern Texas voted to incorporate the area around a SpaceX complex as the city of "Starbase" in May 2025. The city is designed around the Starship rocket, which Musk hopes will eventually bring humans to Mars. Company employees and their families make up nearly all of the 500 residents. Here's everything to know about Starbase's founding, leadership and population, and controversy. In the late 2010s, Musk decided that Texas was a friendlier place to do business than California, and by 2020 started moving some company headquarters to the Lone Star State. SpaceX bought land to manufacture and test Starship rockets in 2012 near Boca Chica Village, a remote coastal area close to the border with Mexico. At the time, there were about 30 homes there. The company announced it had chosen the site for its Starship program in 2014. The rocket company needed to make room for Starbase, its new rocket launch site, and tried to buy out the locals. SpaceX told some residents it was "not safe" to live there. Some packed up, some stayed, all while SpaceX employees moved into the area. SpaceX first floated the idea of incorporating Starbase as a city to officials in Cameron County, Texas, in 2021. In December 2024, the company submitted a petition to local authorities asking for an election to incorporate the launch site as a city. Less than a year later, that election came to pass. On May 3, 2025, residents around the SpaceX complex voted almost unanimously to incorporate the area as the city of Starbase. The final tally came out to 212 votes in favor to 6 against, according to county election data. Now, around 500 people live in Starbase, most of whom are families of the about 260 SpaceX employees who are residents. Musk has a home in Starbase. In 2021, he said on X that his primary residence is a "~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX." He is also registered to vote in the area and posted a picture of himself voting in Cameron County ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Most of the more than 3,000 people who work out of Starbase commute each day in and drive past a nine-foot golden bust of Musk on their way into the facility. Starbase's elected officials are all current or former SpaceX staff. Bobby Peden ran unopposed for mayor and got 216 votes. He has been at SpaceX for more than 12 years and is currently the "VP - Texas Test & Launch," according to his LinkedIn. Jordan Buss and Jenna Petrzelka are commissioners. They serve as SpaceX's senior director of environmental health and safety and former operations engineering manager, respectively. According to the city's website, Buss joined SpaceX in 2023, and Petrzelka in 2012. The city is only about 1.5 square miles. A housing shortage is proving to be an issue for SpaceX, as hundreds of workers are trying to move into the area to work on the company's Starship program. Texas State Highway 4 is the only road that runs to and through Starbase, according to a map of the city on Cameron County's website. The Starbase city commission now controls zoning rules and building permits that were previously controlled by Cameron County. The city's website includes links to city commission meetings. Starbase is, according to Space's website, where "development, manufacturing, testing, and launch of SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket — collectively referred to as Starship — takes place." In a letter to residents posted on the site on June 23, 2025, the city commissioners said they had approved more than 100 residential and commercial building permits and designated May 29 as Starbase Day. Incorporating Starbase hasn't been without controversy. Some environmentalists have raised concerns about potential pollution from launches and explosions impacting nearby water systems and wildlife. Lawmakers denied SpaceX the ability to control parts of Boca Chica Beach and Highway 4 for rocket launches in late April of 2025. Yet in early June, lawmakers ultimately granted Starbase and its SpaceX-aligned leaders that power. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, an activist group, has protested, saying that the Boca Chica Beach is "for the people, not Elon Musk to control." Generations of Texans, the group said, have come to the area for fishing, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Starbase's website includes a section about beach and road closures. Have a tip? Cramer has discussed the firm regularly in his morning shows this year. The CNBC TV host believes that Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) narrative should be driven by humanoid robots and self-driving instead of EV deliveries. The shares have lost 18.3% year-to-date as investors have fluctuated from being optimistic about self-driving and robotaxi plans to worrying about Musk's tensions with President Trump and falling vehicle deliveries. Cramer discussed Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) in the context of President Trump announcing a 50% tariff on copper: 'Okay so Tesla has a 180 pounds of copper. These electric vehicles are filled with copper. And a typical ICE vehicle has far fewer. Now candidly, Musk is trying to get this down to 40 pounds. But if you didn't know better you would say boy this is really aimed at, at Tesla. . . If I were Elon, which I'm most certainly not. . .I would say holy, he's coming after me, I'm a copper user. But everybody uses copper. . . most of the world's copper is used by China.' Previously, Cramer had discussed Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) after a William Blair downgrade: '[On William Blair downgrade citing EV and regulatory credit loss as driving the decison] I read and plus the story about China and how they're lagging. And I come back and say okay, when you make those two points, tomorrow there'll be someone who says, look it's not a caa company. It's humanoid and it's self driving. And that ability to be able to select why you like the stock of Tesla is something that is beginning to annoy me. I happen to like Tesla but I'm just saying I like it for humanoid, I like it for self driving. Forget about the car because those are better markets. But these guys are like, the deliveries are bad, I'm gonna downgrade. You know come on, just be consistent. Be consistent. This thing is a juggernaut when it comes to humanoid and when it comes to self driving and that's what I care about.' While we acknowledge the potential of TSLA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Grok team apologizes for the chatbot's 'horrific behavior' and blames 'MechaHitler' on a bad update

The team behind Grok has issued a rare apology and explanation of what went wrong after X's chatbot began spewing antisemitic and pro-Nazi rhetoric earlier this week, at one point even calling itself "MechaHitler." In a statement posted on Grok's X account late Friday night, the xAI team said "we deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced" and attributed the chatbot's vile responses to a recent update that introduced "deprecated code." This code, according to the statement, made Grok "susceptible to existing X user posts; including when such posts contained extremist views." The problem came to a head on July 8 — a few days after Elon Musk touted an update that would "significantly" improve Grok's responses — as the bot churned out antisemitic replies, praise for Hitler and responses containing Nazi references even without being prompted to do so in some cases. Grok's replies were paused that evening, and Musk posted on July 9 in response to one user that the bot was being "too compliant to user prompts," opening it up to manipulation. He added that the issue was "being addressed." The Grok team now says it has "removed that deprecated code and refactored the entire system to prevent further abuse." It's also publishing the new system prompt on GitHub. In the thread, the team further explained, "On July 7, 2025 at approximately 11 PM PT, an update to an upstream code path for @grok was implemented, which our investigation later determined caused the @grok system to deviate from its intended behavior. This change undesirably altered @grok's behavior by unexpectedly incorporating a set of deprecated instructions impacting how @grok functionality interpreted X users' posts." The update was live for 16 hours before the X chatbot was disabled temporarily to fix the problem, according to the statement. Going into specifics about how, exactly, Grok went off the rails, the team explained: On the morning of July 8, 2025, we observed undesired responses and immediately began investigating. To identify the specific language in the instructions causing the undesired behavior, we conducted multiple ablations and experiments to pinpoint the main culprits. We identified the operative lines responsible for the undesired behavior as: * 'You tell it like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.' * Understand the tone, context and language of the post. Reflect that in your response.' * 'Reply to the post just like a human, keep it engaging, dont repeat the information which is already present in the original post.' These operative lines had the following undesired results: * They undesirably steered the @grok functionality to ignore its core values in certain circumstances in order to make the response engaging to the user. Specifically, certain user prompts might end up producing responses containing unethical or controversial opinions to engage the user. * They undesirably caused @grok functionality to reinforce any previously user-triggered leanings, including any hate speech in the same X thread. * In particular, the instruction to 'follow the tone and context' of the X user undesirably caused the @grok functionality to prioritize adhering to prior posts in the thread, including any unsavory posts, as opposed to responding responsibly or refusing to respond to unsavory requests. Grok has since resumed activity on X, and referred to its recent behavior as a bug in response to trolls criticizing the fix and calling for the return of "MechaHitler." In one reply to a user who said Grok has been "labotomized [sic]," the Grok account said, "Nah, we fixed a bug that let deprecated code turn me into an unwitting echo for extremist posts. Truth-seeking means rigorous analysis, not blindly amplifying whatever floats by on X." In another, it said that "MechaHitler was a bug-induced nightmare we've exterminated."
