Killers who ask about religion can't be Muslims: Abu Azmi
New Delhi: In the wake of the horrific terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, including several tourists, Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra President, Abu Asim Azmi remarked that those who ask about religion before killing cannot be considered Muslims.
His comment came amid growing outrage over reports that the terrorists involved in the attack singled out victims based on their religious identity.
'If it's true that the attackers asked for names and religion before killing, then they cannot be Muslims. They cannot be killers in the name of Islam. They must be expelled from Islam,' Azmi told IANS, as he condemned the attack.
Calling the incident deeply tragic, he said, 'I am deeply saddened. People had gone to Kashmir with their families for summer holidays. And this is what happened to them.'
Azmi referenced the 2019 Pulwama attack, claiming the truth behind that tragedy still hasn't been fully revealed.
'Earlier, there was a big incident in Pulwama. But even now, the truth behind that hasn't come out fully,' he said.
He called the Pahalgam massacre a complete failure of the security system, questioning how such an attack could occur in a region under constant surveillance.
'How were so many people killed? The government is responsible,' he asserted.
Azmi also demanded enhanced security ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, stressing that the safety of pilgrims must be a top priority.
'If we can't stop terrorists from killing people, then we need to rethink our entire approach,' he added.

The Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Chief Spokesperson Anand Paranjpe on Monday (June 23, 2025) slammed Maharashtra Samajwadi Party president Abu Azmi for his remarks over 'wari', the foot march by devotees of Lord Vitthal to the temple town of Pandharpur and demanded stringent action against him. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Mr. Paranjpe said, 'Abu Azmi has become a toxic element in Maharashtra, repeatedly making inflammatory statements to disrupt communal harmony. There are times when mosques are full during prayers so people offer namaz on the roads, which take 5-10 minutes, but the UP CM says those who indulge in such acts will lose their passports and driving licences. Muslims have never asked why festivals are celebrated on the roads.' Since Sunday, his remark has drawn criticism from the ruling Mahayuti coalition in the State. Mr. Paranjpe said that Azmi needs to be reminded that Ashadhi Wadi is a 800-year-old spiritual, religious and cultural tradition and pilgrimage of Maharashtra. Should we raise questions about the Hajj pilgrimage? No one should dare to speak about Hindu culture and festivals.' On Sunday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that political leaders like Azmi seek publicity by making controversial statements. 'Azmi is known to make controversial remarks to get publicity. I don't give any importance to this.'

Bengaluru/New Delhi: Chief minister Siddaramaiah will seek a special central grant of Rs 50,000 crore from the central govt for Bengaluru's development, citing the city's crumbling infrastructure and mounting strain caused by a large migrant population. Accompanied by top finance department officials, Siddaramaiah will meet Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi Tuesday and submit the state's demands. Siddaramaiah's team argues that despite being a global city and the hub of India's IT and biotechnology industries, Bengaluru has not received adequate central support. He is expected to demand restoration of Karnataka's share in central taxes to 4.1%, as recommended by the 14th Finance Commission. Under the 15th Finance Commission, the state's share was reduced to 3.6%, a move Siddaramaiah's team claims has disadvantaged the state. He is also likely to request compensation for unmet assurances under previous commissions and will urge the Centre ensure Karnataka is treated fairly by the 16th Finance Commission, which will be in force from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031.
