Julia Ducournau Stuns Cannes With ‘Alpha'
The French director, who shocked and stunned the world's biggest film festival in 2021 when her body horror masterpiece Titane won the Palme d'Or, returned with her latest genre-mash up, Alpha.

Ducourau walked the red carpet with her cast, including Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani and Emma Mackey, with Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche and actress Vicky Krieps also in attendance.
The Cannes crowd gave Ducournau and her team enthusiastic applause and quite a few cheers for the AIDS-coded horror drama about a mysterious virus and the fear and social exclusion it evokes. While considerably less violent and provocative than her Palme d'Or winner Titane, Alpha proved just as moving, with several of the castmembers drying their eyes as the house lights came up. There was particularly loud applause for Melissa Boros, who plays the titular Alpha, for Farahani as her mother, and Rahim as her uncle, a junkie infected with the virus.
But the loudest cheers were for Ducournau. The home crowd continued to cheer her on through a solid 11-minute standing ovation.
The '80s set Alpha imagines a fictitious epidemic closely inspired by the AIDS crisis, following Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old who lives with her single mom, who is rejected by her classmates because of a rumor spreading that she's been infected with a new disease. One day, she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm and her and her mother's world collapse. Newcomer Mélissa Boros plays Alpha, with Golshifteh Farahani as the mother. Tahar Rahim and Emma Mackey co-star.
Neon, which released Titane (part of its 5-year unbroken run of picking the Palme d'Or winner), picked up North American rights to Alpha last year, shortly before the film began shooting.

'Fairyland' Trailer: Scoot McNairy and Emilia Jones Lead Father-Daughter Drama Based on True Story (Exclusive)

Fairyland (in theaters Oct. 10), directed by Andrew Durham, is based on the acclaimed 2013 memoir of the same name by Alysia Abbott. As a new trailer shared exclusively with PEOPLE shows, the page-to-screen adaptation captures young Alysia's coming of age in San Francisco with her father's bohemian friends in the 1970s and '80s. McNairy, 47, plays Steve Abbott, a poet and activist who comes out as gay following the death of Alysia's mother. Played by Nessa Dougherty as a child and Jones, 23, as an adult, Alysia is brought up with more than her share of independence, it appears. 'When I was your age, I couldn't be the person that I wanted to be,' McNairy's Steve can be heard telling his daughter in the trailer. 'And that kind of thing can really eat you up as a kid. Durham, who filmed Fairyland in 21 days, called it 'a parallel coming-of-age story' in a 2023 interview with Collider. 'This is a story of a daughter, or a young girl, raised by her gay father. If you know anything about that sort of community back then, a lot of those men that came out of the closet in the 1970s during the gay lib movement were going through a second adolescence because they had suppressed that initial adolescence.' In the age of Steam censorship, Peak devs bravely go where no Peak has gone before and begrudgingly add requested cannibalism feature: "Fine"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Peak has become even more peak by adding a much-requested feature: cannibalism. After previously announcing, "guys we can't add cannibalism to Peak," developer Aggro Crab has given in. We did it. Yesterday, the official Aggro Crab Twitter account simply posted the word "fine" as a quote tweet to their original cannibalism dismissal. A follow up reports patch 1.10.a adds Polish and Turkish language support – I wonder if they caused the game to crash like French did – bug fixes, and a "secret third thing." Well, we now know that secret third thing is cannibalism, and it's been implemented in a hilarious way. "The new Peak update is wild," reads a tweet from Twitch and YouTube partner Ava Lamp. "If you get too hungry, your friend looks like a cooked turkey, and you can eat them!" I love that the game has gone with the cartoon approach of simply turning one character into food when another gets hungry. It may seem cruel – or funny, depending on who you are as a person – to eat your friend while trying to climb to the top of the mountain. But, since the devs stopped us from being able to claim victory if our dead body makes it over the finish line, it makes sense to offer ourselves up as a sacrifice so that someone else can make it, at least. For a game made quickly to give Aggro Crab its creative spark back, Peak has done phenomenally well, selling over one million copies in the first six days it was out.
