Julia Ducournau Stuns Cannes With ‘Alpha'

Count on Julia Ducournau to leave Cannes speechless.
The French director, who shocked and stunned the world's biggest film festival in 2021 when her body horror masterpiece Titane won the Palme d'Or, returned with her latest genre-mash up, Alpha.

Ducourau walked the red carpet with her cast, including Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani and Emma Mackey, with Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche and actress Vicky Krieps also in attendance.
The Cannes crowd gave Ducournau and her team enthusiastic applause and quite a few cheers for the AIDS-coded horror drama about a mysterious virus and the fear and social exclusion it evokes. While considerably less violent and provocative than her Palme d'Or winner Titane, Alpha proved just as moving, with several of the castmembers drying their eyes as the house lights came up. There was particularly loud applause for Melissa Boros, who plays the titular Alpha, for Farahani as her mother, and Rahim as her uncle, a junkie infected with the virus.
But the loudest cheers were for Ducournau. The home crowd continued to cheer her on through a solid 11-minute standing ovation.
The '80s set Alpha imagines a fictitious epidemic closely inspired by the AIDS crisis, following Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old who lives with her single mom, who is rejected by her classmates because of a rumor spreading that she's been infected with a new disease. One day, she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm and her and her mother's world collapse. Newcomer Mélissa Boros plays Alpha, with Golshifteh Farahani as the mother. Tahar Rahim and Emma Mackey co-star.
Neon, which released Titane (part of its 5-year unbroken run of picking the Palme d'Or winner), picked up North American rights to Alpha last year, shortly before the film began shooting.

Angelina Jolie preparing to put luxe Hollywood estate on the market as upcoming milestone frees her from LA

Actress Angelina Jolie is said to be getting ready to part ways with the historic Los Angeles estate that she has called home for the last eight years, as she prepares for a move away from the U.S. According to multiple reports, the Oscar-winning starlet is planning to 'put the house up for sale' in the coming months with a view to relocating abroad when her youngest children, twins Knox and Vivienne, turn 18 in July next year. Jolie, 50, has previously revealed her desire to live outside of the U.S., telling The Hollywood Reporter that she was only residing in California because it was one of the conditions of her divorce settlement from her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. Speaking to the outlet about the terms of the agreement with Pitt, 61, in the 2024 interview, Jolie revealed that she was bound to remain in L.A. until all of their children reach the age of 18, admitting at the time that she hoped to spend 'a lot of time in Cambodia' when she leaves. Now, as that date approaches, sources claim that Jolie is beginning to make preparations for her exit from U.S. soil, with an insider telling People: '[Angelina] plans to relocate as soon as Knox and Viv turn 18 next year. She's eyeing several locations abroad. She'll be very happy when she's able to leave Los Angeles.' '[She] never wanted to live in L.A. full time. She didn't have a choice because of the custody arrangement with Brad.' 5 Actress Angelina Jolie is said to be getting ready to part ways with the historic LA estate that she has called home for the last eight years. Anadolu via Getty Images Part of those preparations, the insider said, will be making some minor improvements to her historic home, which is known as the Cecil B. DeMille estate in honor of the famed director, who lived there for 40 years until his death in 1959. Jolie took on that slice of Hollywood history in 2017, when she purchased the property for $24.5 million—later explaining that she had chosen the home because of its proximity to her former spouse, from whom she split in 2016. 'I wanted it to be close to their dad, who is only five minutes away,' she told British Vogue in 2021. After her separation from Pitt, with whom she shares six children: Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, Knox, and Vivienne, the pair became embroiled in a bitter divorce battle that saw them sparring over custody arrangements, shared properties, and even involved allegations of abuse. 5 According to multiple reports, Jolie is planning to 'put the house up for sale' in the coming months. nobyline@backgrid / BACKGRID That legal battle raged on for eight years before finally being settled in December 2024. And while both parties have only shared a few scant details about their split, Jolie did hint at some of the legal details agreed upon by herself and Pitt when she spoke out about the nature of their custody agreement and the restraints that it has put on her life. I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they're 18, I'll be able to leave,' she told The Hollywood Reporter about her reasons for remaining in Los Angeles. 'When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety. I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be … that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here. [After Los Angeles,] I'll spend a lot of time in Cambodia. I'll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world.' 5 The property features six bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and an array of amenities. nobyline@backgrid / BACKGRID For much of the time since her split from Pitt, Jolie has resided primarily in the historic 11,000-square-foot abode in Los Feliz, which was built back in 1913, and boasts six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. In addition to its many bedrooms and bathrooms, the Beaux Arts-style mansion, which was built in 1913, also offers an array of living spaces, including a 'beautiful pool house' and a 'studio house' that has its own entrance. And while the home maintains its historic appearance, it underwent an extensive six-year renovation before Jolie purchased it—with the picture-perfect grounds and the swimming pool also given a meticulous overhaul. 5 Jolie, 50, has previously revealed her desire to live outside of the U.S. WireImage 'A newer classic old Hollywood style pool with arched fountains, surrounded by rolling lawns, specimen trees, rose gardens, and dramatic views from the Observatory to Ocean sunsets,' the original listing description said. Should Jolie follow through with her plans to move abroad, she will join a long line of celebrities who have quit the U.S. in recent months—with many pointing to President Donald Trump's reelection as the reason for their relocation. Among those who have fled further afield are actress Rosie O'Donnell, who revealed in January that she had moved to Ireland along with her youngest child, Dakota 'Clay' O'Donnell, 12, who is nonbinary. 5 Jolie revealed that she was bound to remain in L.A. until all of their children reach the age of 18. AFP via Getty Images At the time, O'Donnell said that she no longer felt 'safe' living in the U.S. under Trump's presidency—a declaration that saw him threatening to revoke her citizenship for good. Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres recently confirmed for the first time that her decision to move to the U.K. with her wife, Portia de Rossi, was prompted by Trump's victory in the 2024 election, telling British broadcaster Richard Bacon that they had originally only intended to reside in the country for a few months out of the year. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in,'' she explained during a July 20 appearance at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham, England. 'And we're like, 'We're staying here.''

'Fairyland' Trailer: Scoot McNairy and Emilia Jones Lead Father-Daughter Drama Based on True Story (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at the official trailer for Fairyland, in theaters Oct. 10 An adaptation of Alysia Abbott's memoir, it follows a single father raising his daughter in bohemian San Francisco and the AIDS crisis The Andrew Durham-directed film stars Scoot McNairy, Emilia Jones, Geena Davis, Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, Bella Murphy, Adam Lambert and Nessa Dougherty Scoot McNairy and Emilia Jones are charting a complicated father-daughter journey against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis in their new movie. Fairyland (in theaters Oct. 10), directed by Andrew Durham, is based on the acclaimed 2013 memoir of the same name by Alysia Abbott. As a new trailer shared exclusively with PEOPLE shows, the page-to-screen adaptation captures young Alysia's coming of age in San Francisco with her father's bohemian friends in the 1970s and '80s. McNairy, 47, plays Steve Abbott, a poet and activist who comes out as gay following the death of Alysia's mother. Played by Nessa Dougherty as a child and Jones, 23, as an adult, Alysia is brought up with more than her share of independence, it appears. 'When I was your age, I couldn't be the person that I wanted to be,' McNairy's Steve can be heard telling his daughter in the trailer. 'And that kind of thing can really eat you up as a kid. I just didn't want you to be raised the way that I was raised.' Alysia appears to prefer being what Steve playfully calls 'such a normal girl.' But later in the trailer, Jones can be seen confiding in a friend, tears in her eyes: 'When you keep a secret about something for so long, it becomes a part of you.' Sofia Coppola is among the producers of Fairyland, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. It costars Geena Davis as Alysia's grandmother Munca, as well as Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, Bella Murphy and Adam Lambert. Durham, who filmed Fairyland in 21 days, called it 'a parallel coming-of-age story' in a 2023 interview with Collider. 'This is a story of a daughter, or a young girl, raised by her gay father. If you know anything about that sort of community back then, a lot of those men that came out of the closet in the 1970s during the gay lib movement were going through a second adolescence because they had suppressed that initial adolescence.' Alysia, he continued, 'is coming of age as [Steve] is coming of age again. So we're watching these two worlds collide and also connect.' Lambert, 43, read Abbott's memoir and 'thought it was beautiful,' he recalled, revealing a personal connection to her story. 'I've always loved San Francisco in the '70s, particularly in the Castro, the gay liberation movement. My mom's side of the family, they lived there in the Castro during that time. It hits home for me.' Lionsgate and Willa will distribute Fairyland in theaters Oct. 10. Read the original article on People

In the age of Steam censorship, Peak devs bravely go where no Peak has gone before and begrudgingly add requested cannibalism feature: "Fine"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Peak has become even more peak by adding a much-requested feature: cannibalism. After previously announcing, "guys we can't add cannibalism to Peak," developer Aggro Crab has given in. We did it. Yesterday, the official Aggro Crab Twitter account simply posted the word "fine" as a quote tweet to their original cannibalism dismissal. A follow up reports patch 1.10.a adds Polish and Turkish language support – I wonder if they caused the game to crash like French did – bug fixes, and a "secret third thing." Well, we now know that secret third thing is cannibalism, and it's been implemented in a hilarious way. "The new Peak update is wild," reads a tweet from Twitch and YouTube partner Ava Lamp. "If you get too hungry, your friend looks like a cooked turkey, and you can eat them!" I love that the game has gone with the cartoon approach of simply turning one character into food when another gets hungry. It may seem cruel – or funny, depending on who you are as a person – to eat your friend while trying to climb to the top of the mountain. But, since the devs stopped us from being able to claim victory if our dead body makes it over the finish line, it makes sense to offer ourselves up as a sacrifice so that someone else can make it, at least. For a game made quickly to give Aggro Crab its creative spark back, Peak has done phenomenally well, selling over one million copies in the first six days it was out. Now, climb that mountain and eat your friends. Or, check out all the best games of 2025 so far.
