Opinion: The rise of dark romance and the controversies behind it

Booktok —the reading community on the social media app TikTok— has shaped the publishing industry, its dedicated members playing a crucial role in whether a book joins the New York Times bestseller list or gets buried between other titles crowding the bookstore shelves. Romance has become the most popular literary genre in the U.S., making $1.4 billion in revenue in 2022 with the help of Booktok. Dark romance, a subgenre that focuses on messy, twisted, and often morally questionable love stories and explores themes of abuse, violence and trauma, has also gained significant popularity with the rise of Booktok in 2020. The genre delves into taboo, complicated topics, with some of its tropes being mafias, kidnapping, violence and stalking which are often painted as love or desirability.
Dark romance could be considered an evolution of Dark Romanticism, a genre that emerged from the Transcendental philosophical ideas that grew popular in the nineteenth century . The literary movement was often associated with gothic fiction —another origin of modern dark romance— which originated from works such as Horace Walpole's 'The Castle of Otranto' (1764) and continued by English writers such as Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte and John Polidori. However, dark romanticism emphasized the fallibility of human beings while gothic writers attempt to create an atmosphere of mystery and suspense, making readers feel intense emotions by using elements of horror.
Dark romance books are filled with triggering content such as sexual violence, murder and stalking, yet many of their readers —primarily women — find great comfort in the story. Readers often use fiction as a form of escapism , and the argument can be made that dark romance is therapeutic because no matter what the female protagonist goes through, the story always ends with a 'happy ending' and find love. In addition, the intense tension between the two morally-ambiguous characters can be intriguing to many readers. The main appeal of the genre is how it touches on real-life issues combined with the fantasy it creates, in which the protagonist survives and even finds some sort of love and happiness in the end.
Some supporters of the genre, such as bestselling author of the 'Twisted' series, Ana Huang , argue that 'fiction is a safe way to explore those fantasies and experience these visceral emotions without them actually being in danger .' However, studies also show that repetitive exposure to violence through entertainment, particularly electronic media, increases the risk of violent behavior from viewers . In addition, continuously experiencing negative emotions due to violent or gory scenes through media can lead to the habituation of certain natural emotional reactions or 'desensitization.' This means that consuming dark romance can impact one's perception of the world and shape their behavior, even if they do not consciously romanticize its content, especially for young readers with undeveloped minds . Readers often use these dark romance books as a form of escapism, which leads to withdrawal from social relationships, potentially blurring lines between healthy, realistic boundaries and toxic behaviors depicted in fictional novels. For example, many dark romance fans on TikTok depict anger, forceful love, jealousy and over-possessiveness towards a partner to be a sign of strength, passion and love.
'Fifty Shades of Grey' is a popular example of the harm of dark romance. The book is considered the bestseller of the decade and it depicts the abusive characteristics of the relationship between Anastasia and Christian, such as stalking, intimidation, and isolation, as romantic. The study also proves that reading books containing romanticized violence against women is also directly associated with health risks in adolescent and young adult females. Despite the book having multiple explicit and intense themes throughout the story, the book is purchased by many teenagers , who are especially vulnerable to being mentally impacted by the media they consume. The study emphasizes that if women experienced adverse health behaviors first, reading 'Fifty Shades of Grey' or similar works of fiction might reaffirm those experiences and potentially aggravate related trauma. Likewise, it is possible that the book influences the onset of health behaviors in its readers by creating an underlying context for the behaviors. Such books mold young women's perception of what a relationship should be, and overall, can have negative influences, no matter how much the reader consciously separates reality from fiction.
Another harmful aspect of the genre is how it downplays and misrepresents serious, real-life issues. For example, H. D. Carlton's 'Haunting Adeline,' which has become one of the most popular dark romance books online, depicts Adeline being stalked and forced into a non-consensual relationship by Zade Meadows. Not only does the book glorify a stalker and assaulter as a 'love interest,' but it also tries to depict Zade as a hero by stating that he works to protect women and children from human trafficking. This was not used as an opportunity to discuss and explore a serious and relevant topic, but is simply a plot device to make the character more likeable. However, Zade's harmful behavior towards the protagonist overpowers the subplot of his 'altruistic' actions. A Youtube book reviewer, Cindy , argues that the novel depicts human trafficking as something that happens completely randomly, downplaying the many factors, such as ethnicity, disabilities and status , that raise the possibility of falling victim to trafficking.
Dark romance is a subgenre that has been popular in the past and will remain popular in today's world, despite its many faults. However, this does not change the fact that the contents of these stories are extremely harmful and that the consumption and distribution of such novels should be discussed more by fans and critics of the genre alike. Fiction is one of the strongest bonds between people worldwide, allowing it to shape individual minds as well as the society as a whole. This means that the rise of a genre that explores darker themes has the potential for writers to explore and bring awareness to issues that are often ignored, rather than romanticizing them. Related

A TikTok-famous "Soft" perfume rollerball that'll have you smelling like a walking, talking, sugar-filled bakery — all for only $6. It has a hint of sweet citrus, and plenty of reviewers compare it to the smell of warm sugar cookies. Plus, it even reminds reviewers of the popular (and VERY expensive) "Pink Sugar" perfume. 👀 A pair of "Dreamlux" leggings reviewers can't help but compare to Lululemon thanks to that buttery soft material — but, like, a lot cheaper. They're perfect for running errands, lounging around, or even hitting that squat goal at the gym — because yeah, they're just that comfy. A Baccarat Rouge 540-inspired moisturizing body wash with white jasmine, red currant, and sweet amber so you can smell as ✨expensive✨ as you feel. A 🍒cherry bag charm🍒 you can clip onto your purse or keys because loving cherries is a personality trait at this rate, and honestly, why not embrace it? This looks pretty much just like the $95 Coach one, and even has a nice feel and weight to it (but like, wayyy less expensive). A tote bag people will ~swear~ is the Longchamp Le Pliage bag at first (and second, and third) glance — after all, it even folds up into a lil' compact rectangle just like it. It's the perfect bag to take along to the office, thanks to how sleek and professional it looks — plus, it's large enough to fit a laptop, toiletry bag, and everything else you could possibly need. Or an elevated laptop tote bag because you deserve to strut into work in style. It's roomy, super versatile, and the perfect alternative to the Béis Work Tote, but a lot less $$$. Reviewers even say they like this one a lot better. A lingerie bodysuit with an elegant lace pattern and plunging neckline to make you feel ~sexy~ without having to drop $$$ on that expensive Victoria's Secret set you've been eyeing. Believe me, that special someone in your life will surely love it. 😉 Eos' Shea Butter Vanilla Cashmere body lotion reviewers compare to more expensive brands like Philosophy and Bath and Body Works. This lotion is alllll over your socials thanks to the lightweight, long-lasting moisture — and the fact that it smells like paradise in a tube. It's easy to blend on your cheeks, and you'll fall in love with how pigmented, long-lasting, and buildable it is! AND apparently (you didn't hear this from me), it's giving Rare Beauty a run for its money *sips tea*. A seamless, compressive ribbed bodycon jumpsuit oh-so-freakin' similar to the Skims jumpsuit that has dominated your FYP lately, but for like a fraction of the price. It's the perf 'fit for a low-impact workout, a casual outing, or simply modeling for your Insta story. No one has to know that you got it from Amazon. A bottle of Elizavecca Hair Treatment for anyone who wants a frizz-free, silky look without paying exorbitant salon prices. Just apply it to wet hair, leave it in for five minutes, and say goodbye to the damaged look your hair has been sporting after years of abuse at the hands of bleach and flat irons. Many reviewers even say this is comparable (or even better) than the pricey Olaplex No.3. An oversized hoodie, because why pay for an Abercrombie Essential Popover hoodie when this is basically the same thing for so much cheaper? You're gonna wanna snag one (or five) of these ASAP. An interactive Petcube pet camera with a wide angle and night vision, for peace of mind since you'll have the ability to check in on your furry baby 24/7 — for like a fraction of the price of the famous Furbo. No need to fear losing these bad boys while lounging poolside at that fab resort you booked — these glasses are not only super cute but extremely affordable, so you can keep a backup pair (or two) for the days you misplace these at the tiki bar. An affordable longline sports bra if you've always wanted the Lululemon look, but you don't feel like dropping 💸💸💸 on the name brand. The look and material are so comparable to Lulu, no one will believe you were able to snag this from Amazon. Time to get one in every color. A quilted purse that's really giving ✨Chanel.✨ It's luxurious, has quilt stitching (be still, my beating heart), three compartments, and is super sophisticated-looking. You'll find yourself reaching for this bag on every occasion. The best part? This bag won't cost you a whole month's rent. Or a chain purse if you've always salivated over the thought of owning Gucci's Dionysus bag, but your bank account says ✨no.✨ This has the same chain style and front clasp, so no one will even be able to tell the difference — don't worry, I won't spill your lil' secret. A Renpho percussion massager with five different heads and speeds so you can use it all over your body. You can give yourself a great deep muscle massage at a much more affordable rate than the TheraGun that's been sitting in your cart for the last few weeks. Walls, floors, tubs, sinks, cars, and shoes — even the decrepit chandelier in the foyer can be cleaned with a lil' bit of elbow grease, some water, and these magical sponges. It's pretty much just like Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, just ✨cheaper ✨. And all without having to sell out $50+ on a set of trendy Bala Bangles??? You're gonna be the trendiest person at your gym. Use this baby to cook up some rice, soup, stew, or even some sourdough bread. Essence's Lash Princess Mascara for those of you who would love a way to get the falsies look for $5! This mascara is incredibly affordable, incredibly volumizing, and lasts the entire day — plus, it comes off so easily, no smudging or makeup remover required! Say goodbye to the days of shelling out for more expensive mascaras like Too Faced Better Than Sex, L'Oreal Telescopic Lift, and many, many more — this one is infinitely better. A set of satin pillowcases that are gentle on hair, meaning you're less likely to experience tangles or frizz, no matter how much you toss and turn. And no, you don't need to spend as much as you would buying the popular Slip pillowcases. E.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer, with tea tree and vitamin E to smooth out the appearance of wrinkles, blur pores, and get that whole IRL filter look. Plus, it hydrates your skin, lasts all day, and is a lot cheaper (yet incredibly similar to) Tatcha's Silk Canvas primer! Time to make this a staple in your makeup routine. A pair of Cushionaire cork-bottom sandals if you want that Mayari Birks feel but without that higher ticket price. They're incredibly flexible, so they're comfortable to wear for long walks across the beach or through the outlet mall. They have over 75,000 ratings on Amazon, and reviewers basically swear by them! A trio of hydrating lip sleeping masks to give you soft and supple lips for less than half the price of the popular Laneige lip mask. These masks use ingredients like berry extract and vitamin C to target dry and cracked lips while you sleep. There are three different scents, so you can share them with friends — or hoard them all for yourself. L'Oreal's illuminating Lumi Glotion for those of you who want that perfect "no-makeup" look. You can use this in place of foundation or simply add it to your existing makeup look for a bit of a glow. Plus, it's under $15, so it's the perfect substitute for the pricier options like Glossier Futuredew and Drunk Elephant's D-Bronzi Drops. A fanny pack to keep your most valuable items strapped close to your chest — it's necessary while you weave through a busy mall or an overpopulated airport terminal. And it's striking just how closely it resembles the Lululemon belt bag. A pair of stylish teardrop earrings so much cheaper than the (very) expensive Bottega Veneta ones that look exactly like them. These gold-plated earrings may look heavy, but reviewers swear they're lightweight and perfect for those with sensitive ears. A midi corset dress to make you feel like you're a modern-day princess just taking a walk through the woods. It has a back cinch and a front tie, basically all the same features as the TikTok-famous House of CB Carmen dress (but you know, not $225) — your little heart will be aflutter at the sight of this cutesy dress. Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water that will gently cleanse your skin and lift away even waterproof makeup, along with dirt and excess oil. Reviewers even prefer this to Bioderma, which is more than double the price. Slingback heels so similar to Chanel, you'll find yourself triple-checking the price just in case! You can pair 'em with slacks or a cutesy lil' dress — you'll basically be radiating luxury. And a pair of slip-on loafer mules with the iconic gold clasp that'll have your friends swearingggg they're Gucci. Sophistication, meet an affordable price tag. Yeah, you def need these ASAP. A faux pearl choker so dainty and elegant, Vivienne Westwood herself will be impressed by how ridiculously similar it looks to the real one. Snag one of these to add a bit of "ooh la la 🥂" to any 'fit you throw together. A spandex-blend slip maxi dress sure to be your go-to piece any time of year. It's a gorgeous and simple dress that you'll find yourself slipping on every time you have an event where you wanna feel ✨fancy. ✨ Plus, it's so incredibly similar to the popular Skims one, but affordable enough that you can actually buy one in every color. Or a ribbed square-neck, long-sleeve maxi dress, also incredibly similar to the Skims one for a fraction of the price. It's soft, it's stretchy, and it's uber comfy, so you'll find yourself reaching for this piece almost every single day. Maybelline's Cheek Heat gel-cream blush that's about one-third the price of Glossier's Cloud Paint and gives a nice touch of color to your cheeks with only a dot or two. It's super pigmented, buildable, and ridiculously easy to use. Seriously, no one will even be able to tell the difference between this and the more expensive option. A sleeveless halter bodysuit so you don't have to overpay for a closet staple ever again. Its buttery soft feel reminds reviewers of the famous Skims one, with some even claiming that they prefer it to the name brand! A cubic zirconia cuff that'll have strangers actually thinking you spent (wait, checks notes) $17,000 😱 on the Cartier Love Bracelet. Not only is it less than $12, but you don't need to screw it on — unlike the way too ridiculously expensive version. And on that note, a cubic zirconia ring because you've always wanted the Cartier Love Ring to match, but not the price attached to it. It's simple, it's elegant, and it's pretty much guaranteed to never go out of style. Time to get one in every metal. A classic pleated tennis skirt to make it look like you belong at a country club tennis court — no one's gotta know you've got a budget. Reviewers have compared these to Nike, Alo, and Aritzia — hello, bougie! Or a high-waisted mini skirt that looks incredibly familiar (hello, Aritzia? Is that you?) and made with a satiny material that is sure to make you feel ~très chic~. This skirt comes in a bunch of different colors, so you can snag a bunch of 'em for the same price as a single name-brand one — and no one will even be able to tell the difference. A simple, gorgeous tennis bracelet to add some ✨sparkle✨ to your wrist, but ya know, without costing you the down payment of a nice house in the suburbs. This elegant piece looks just like Swarovski, and reviewers say it doesn't tarnish, so it's bound to last you a lifetime. After all, diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but cubic zirconia is her lover. Eve Hansen Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum to make you feel like you just got a facial, when really all you did was apply a few drops of this lil' magic potion. It'll hydrate your skin, reduce under-eye puffiness and dark circles, smooth fine lines, boost overall hydration, and create a radiant glow✨! Plus, reviewers even compare it to TNS Recovery Complex serum, which is literally over $200 for a 1-ounce bottle (YIKES). A full-zip track jacket because dropping $100+ on that Lululemon Define jacket honestly does not seem like the best financial decision at this time — but honestly, why would you, when this baby is so similar and literally a fraction of the price?! And yeah, don't worry, it even has the thumb holes. An expensive-looking faux-leather belt that is sure to become the focal piece of your outfit. Is it actually Gucci? Perhaps not. But those buddies you meet weekly for brunch don't gotta know that. Nyx Fat Oil Lip Drip, because why spend $40+ on that one Dior lip oil, when you can have basically the same thing for $9?! It's hydrating (thank you, vegan squalane), has beautiful sheer colors, and, despite the gloss, is surprisingly not sticky! Literally gorgeous. A loungewear set for those of you who don't want to sacrifice comfort for style. You can lounge around confident in your fashionista status with a set that looks ridiculously similar to the Skims set the Kardashians are known to adore. You, after calculating how much money you just saved: The reviews used in this post have been edited for length and clarity.

Goodbye, Carrie Bradshaw: 'Sex and the City' fans react to the bittersweet end of 'And Just Like That...'

After three seasons, the controversial HBO Max spinoff has ended. I couldn't help but wonder … is this really the last time we'll see Carrie Bradshaw? The Sex and the City revival series, And Just Like That…, came to an end last night after three seasons. The controversial reboot, which premiered on HBO Max in 2021, was hardly perfect — and was often criticized by O.G. SATC fans, even as they continued to tune in. Still, bidding adieu to Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her besties, Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), is bittersweet. The AJLT series finale marks the end of our collective witnessing of these enduring female friendships. It really is the end of an era. Again. 'Farewell to And Just Like That. You were a show that should have never been made but I would've watched 20 more seasons of you. Why am I crying?' one fan asked on TikTok, while another declared, 'Was AJLT good? No. Did I cry over the ending? Abso-f****ng-lutely. The end of an era.' One fan mourned on X, 'I know the storylines haven't always been great & some of the additional characters were bizarre, but I'm going to miss the end of my Thursday night Carrie fix, especially after it started getting interesting.' Ahead of Thursday night's finale, much of the fandom was left wondering what would happen to our favorite Manolo Blahnik-loving fashionista. Would Bradshaw, who'd broken up with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) for the third time, remain single? Or would she open herself up to the possibility of love with her downstairs neighbor, Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake)? Writer, director and showrunner of And Just Like That… Michael Patrick King opted for the former: Bradshaw chooses herself. It was an ending — and decision — that King felt was appropriate for a protagonist who's had her fair share of tumultuous romances over the last 27 years. 'The last line: The Woman realized she wasn't alone. She was on her own. That's it,' King recently told Hollywood Reporter. 'That is what I wanted to say as an echo and a callback and a response to the finale of Sex and the City.' Parker, herself, is also proud of where Bradshaw ends up, telling the New York Times in a story published Friday, 'She's wiser. She's much more comfortable with the questions that had been uncomfortable. She had, after the loss of a husband, a sort of nobility that I didn't know she would possess. She carries her years with her, and it doesn't mean that she's cynical or ruined or bitter or angry. She is still spirited and enthusiastic and curious.' King and Parker aren't the only ones happy with where we left Bradshaw — plenty of fans are too. 'Watching a woman constantly kind of like, tow the line between being independent and completely codependent, and like, kind of always needing a man to be OK, has been informative to my experience as a woman, I believe,' a loyal Sex and the City viewer said of Bradshaw on TikTok. 'Carrie ending up on her own, and being happy and being OK. You guys, I'm not kidding… I'm not looking for a man ever again… Carrie Bradshaw made being single OK.' Another fan shared a similarly joyous sentiment on X, writing, 'I'm glad Carrie is on her own. She doesn't need a man to be happy. She's got herself, her friends, her remarkable clothing, her brownstone, and her adorable cat. Sounds like a fabulous life to me.' Earlier this month, Parker shared an emotional tribute to her onscreen alter ego, whom she began portraying in 1998. 'Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years,' Parker wrote on Instagram. 'I think I have loved her most of all. I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion. Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt. To you all.'

'Skibidi' and 'tradwife': social media words added to Cambridge dictionary

Words popularised by Gen Z and Gen Alpha including "skibidi", "delulu", and "tradwife" are among 6,000 new entries to the online edition of the Cambridge Dictionary over the last year, its publisher said Monday. Cambridge University Press said tradwife, a portmanteau of traditional wife, reflected "a growing, controversial Instagram and TikTok trend that embraces traditional gender roles". The dictionary also took on the challenge of defining skibidi, a word popularised in online memes, as a term which had "different meanings such as cool or bad, or can be used with no real meaning". The gibberish word was spread by a YouTube channel called "Skibidi Toilet" and is associated with the mindless, "brain rot" content found on social media and consumed by Gen Alpha's overwhelmingly digital lifestyle. The dictionary defined delulu, derived from the word delusional, as "believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to". As an example, it cited a 2025 speech in parliament where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase "delulu with no solulu". "It's not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary," said Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme manager at the Cambridge Dictionary. "We only add words where we think they'll have staying power. Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary." Other new phrases include "lewk", used to describe a unique fashion look and popularised by RuPaul's Drag Race, and "inspo", short for inspiration. Work from home culture has given rise to "mouse jiggler", referring to a way to pretend to work when you are not. There is also "forever chemical", man-made chemicals that stay in the environment for years and have gained traction as concerns grow about the irreversible impact of climate change on the health of humans and the plant. aks/jxb
