Today's Quordle Hints (and Answer) for Sunday, August 17, 2025
How to play Quordle
Quordle lives on the Merriam-Webster website. A new puzzle goes live every day. If you've never played, it's a twist on The New York Times' daily Wordle game, in which you have a limited number of attempts to guess a five-letter mystery word. In Quordle, though, you're simultaneously solving four Wordle-style puzzles, and each of your guesses gets applied to the four puzzles simultaneously. Due to the increased difficulty, Quordle grants you nine guesses (12 if you play on 'Chill' mode, or eight if you play on 'Extreme'), rather than Wordle's six.
To start, guess a five-letter word. The letters of the word in each of the four quadrants will turn green if they're correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn't in that secret word at all.

How I solved today's Quordle
SLATE and MOUND are my starter words, which don't help me all that much today. But I guess a gray tile gives me just as much info as a yellow or green tile, I just have to think a little harder.
I'll try BIRCH for a whole new batch of letters.
The upper right might be AMITY. Yep!
I think the bottom right is CHECK. Yes.
The bottom left might be DRIVE. Close. It's either DRIED or DRIER. Oh, it has to be DRIER because the D can't be in last position. Yes.
I thought the upper left might be UNION, but that doesn't work. UNZIP? Nope. Wow, this is a tough one. Oh, FUNGI? Yes!
The best starter words for Quordle
What should you play for that first guess? We can look to Wordle for some general guidelines.
The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that's still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn't a single 'best' starting word, but The New York Times's Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:
CRANE
TRACE
SLANT
CRATE
CARTE
Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you'll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:
SALET
REAST
TRACE
CRATE
SLATE
Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it's better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

The category types in today's Connections puzzle Here are spoiler-free hints that describe the type of each category in today's Connections: Yellow category - Synonyms. Green category - Synonyms. Blue category - Similar nouns. Purple category - Fill in the blank. Hints for the themes in today's Connections puzzle Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today's Connections: Yellow category - They say 'you're good to go.' Green category - You only get a few of these, so make the most of them. Blue category - What the front desk will tell you about at check-in. Purple category - Time devices. BEWARE: Spoilers follow for today's Connections puzzle! We're about to give away some of the answers. Scroll slowly if you don't want the whole thing spoiled. (The full solution is a bit further down.) A heads up about the tricky parts There's nothing on the board today about billiards, despite words like CUE, POOL, and BREAK. BREAKFAST is usually preceded by 'continental.' SHOT belongs in a phrase like, 'We've only got one SHOT at this.' What are the categories in today's Connections? Yellow: INDICATION Green: OPPORTUNITY Blue: HOTEL AMENITIES Purple: WORDS BEFORE 'WATCH' DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW Ready to learn the answers to today's Connections puzzle? I give them all away below. What are the yellow words in today's Connections? The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today's yellow group is INDICATION and the words are: CUE, NOD, PROMPT, SIGNAL. What are the green words in today's Connections? The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is OPPORTUNITY and the words are: BREAK, CHANCE, OPENING, SHOT. What are the blue words in today's Connections? The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue category is HOTEL AMENITIES and the words are: BREAKFAST, PARKING, POOL, WI-FI. What are the purple words in today's Connections? The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today's purple category is WORDS BEFORE 'WATCH' and the words are: DIGITAL, POCKET, STOP, WRIST. How I solved today's Connections WRIST and POCKET make me think there might be a watch category. DIGITAL and STOP work there, too. 🟪 CHANCE, SHOT, and OPENING could be words referring to opportunity. Not sure what the fourth might be. Maybe BREAKFAST, POOL, WI-FI, and PARKING go together as amenities at a hotel. 🟦 NOD, PROMPT, and SIGNAL probably all go together as words describing an indicator. CUE fits there, too. 🟨 That means BREAK is the one that goes with SHOT, CHANCE, and OPENING. 🟩 How to play Connections I have a full guide to playing Connections, but here's a refresher on the rules: First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on). Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll get a chance to try again. You win when you've correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed. How to win Connections The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don't hit 'submit' until you've confirmed that your group of four contains only those four things. If you're stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed 'Whistler's Mother,' you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn't fit any of the obvious themes, either. Another way to win when you're stuck is, obviously, to read a few helpful hints–which is why we share these pointers every day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle! Solve the daily Crossword
