Working group offers recommendations for AI use in schools to NM lawmakers
On Wednesday, the Legislative Education Study Committee heard from a working group of school staff, students, and non-profits on their recommendations on policy surrounding AI.

'Every job in some way is beginning to incorporate AI. And so, if PED fails to provide schools with the tools they need to learn how to use AI with integrity and with safety and knowledge of natural biases of these machines, it means they will be woefully unprepared for entering a career,' said Andrew Proctor, a student at East Mountain High School.
The working group was formed as a result of HM 2 in the last legislative session. On Wednesday, the group told lawmakers that AI policy should ensure equitable access to AI in all New Mexico schools. That recommendation includes having an oversight body at the New Mexico Public Education Department who would help schools find funding opportunities to implement AI and also create a vetting system so schools know which AI tools are safe to use.
'We should be working to ensure AI use in New Mexico dismantles existing barriers, not creates new ones,' said Francine Binnert, Librarian, Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School.
The group also recommended ongoing professional development for teachers on the technology. 'AI is moving faster than our systems can keep up, and without thoughtful leadership, educators will thrive while others fall behind. Not because of effort but training and guidance,' said Jaycie Homer, Teacher, Lovington Municipal Schools.
The group also highlighted the importance of safety laws addressing different concerns, like personal data if a student's information is entered, or cyberbullying if a student uses a chatbot to create mean messages for a peer. Lawmakers are considering the recommendations ahead of the upcoming 30-day session.
'They're going to use it. But I am concerned about ensuring students are developing critical thinking skills. So, how are we ensuring that?' said Sen. Anthony Thornton (R-Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe & Torrance Counties).
The legislative session begins on January 21, 2026.

Google appears to be keeping the prices of the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL in line with the Pixel 9 family launched last year. On the other hand, Apple is set to add a $50 premium across the board for the iPhone 17 handsets. Apple is mitigating this by increasing the base level of storage on these entry-level models, so a like-for-like comparison with the second-tier models of the iPhone 16 will show an effective $50 saving year-on-year. That needs a close reading of the specifications to become clear. A quick comparison online or in-store of the prices will show (as much like-for-like as you can get between Android and iOS) that the Pixel is the more cost-effective option. Pixel 10 Pro Wins This Round Of AI It can't have escaped anyone's notice that artificial intelligence is the latest buzzword in computing. This isn't restricted to mobile; everywhere you turn, you can see AI being used in countless ways. The smartphone is the key computing device for many, and the AI revolution is incredibly visible on the smartphone. At least on Android smartphones. Apple's efforts in artificial intelligence have fallen short of the publicly announced goals at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2024. Features that were going to debut on the iPhone 16, then would be coming by the end of the year, may turn up ahead of the iPhone 17 launch. That delay, of more than a year, hands Google a visible win for those expecting modern artificial intelligence on their smartphone. Pixel 10 Pro Has More To Show In 2025 That's just the state of play of AI right now. When the Pixel 10 smartphones are launched, they will have all the added AI benefits from Android 16, as well as the new tools and updates in Google's first-party apps. AI will continue to be one of the buzzwords of 2025. Google will have demonstrated its lead and then extended it as consumers get ready to buy their new smartphones. Apple's AI efforts are still trying to match the promises of June 2024. Those who have purchased the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro smartphones Add to that the leap forward that Google will make with the launch of Android 16 on the Pixel 10 phones, as well as the new AI features in Google's first-party apps, and you can see how Pixel will have an AI advantage with consumers. Apple's AI promises from WWDC 2025 are less than grand. David Sacks says the doomsday scenario of AI wiping out jobs is 'overhyped'
Artificial general intelligence hinges on the idea that AI can reach human levels of reasoning. White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks says we're not quite there yet. The investor said AI still needs human input in order to provide "meaningful business value." David Sacks, the White House AI and crypto czar, is throwing cold water on the AGI hype train. AI companies are racing to achieve AGI, or artificial general intelligence, commonly considered a form of AI that can reach human levels of reasoning. The continued advancement of AI has led some to believe that the technology will lead to a large-scale wipeout of jobs or even worse outcomes, like human extinction. Sacks, a tech investor who has supported major companies such as Airbnb, Facebook, and Uber, wrote in an X post on Saturday that AI hasn't progressed as quickly as many have predicted — specifically, the idea that AI will "self-improve" and rapidly achieve "godlike superintelligence" has been blown out of proportion. "None of this is to gainsay the progress. We are seeing strong improvement in quality, usability, and price/performance across the top model companies. This is the stuff of great engineering and should be celebrated," Sacks wrote in his post. "It's just not the stuff of apocalyptic pronouncements. Oppenheimer has left the building." One of the doomsday scenarios Sacks rejected in his post is the fear that AI will lead to massive job losses. The investor said that's yet to pan out since AI relies on a lot of human input for prompts and for verification. "This means that apocalyptic predictions of job loss are as overhyped as AGI itself," he said. "Instead, the truism that 'you're not going to lose your job to AI but to someone who uses AI better than you' is holding up well." Sacks isn't the only AGI naysayer. Google Brain's cofounder Andrew Ng said at a June Y Combinator talk that "AGI has been overhyped" and that "there'll be a lot of things that humans can do that AI cannot." Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a Lex Fridman podcast that he likes to use the term AJI, or "artificial jagged intelligence," to describe the current phase of AI — one that is remarkably intelligent but can still make basic mistakes. Former Coinbase chief technology officer (CTO) Balaji Srinivasan says the future of corporate fundraising will happen outside of Wall Street, with companies issuing 'cryptoequities' on blockchain networks instead of going public on the NYSE or Nasdaq. Srinivasan told his 1 million-plus X followers that the real reform to IPOs would be eliminating the costly Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) rules. He believes this change won't come through Washington, but through crypto itself. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) is a U.S. law passed in 2002 to protect investors from corporate fraud after scandals like Enron and WorldCom. It requires strict financial reporting, internal controls, and regular audits for public companies. While it boosts transparency, compliance can cost millions annually, especially for large firms. 'We'll actually get that reform… but only via crypto, because all companies will become cryptoequities. That means they'll list on Internet capital markets and crypto exchanges, rather than NYSE/NASDAQ,' he pointed to a decades-long decline in the number of U.S. public companies, alongside a rapid rise in cryptocurrencies over the past ten years. 'The big picture is that we're just sunsetting U.S. capital markets in favor of Internet capital markets,' Srinivasan said. He singled out Senator Elizabeth Warren and FTC Chair Lina Khan, calling them part of a 'statist' faction that 'hasn't founded businesses' and 'doesn't want to advance technology.' In his words, 'Their actual policy goal was to kill tech and stop us from getting to Mars… they were building an anti-tech army, and that army was (for now) defeated on the battlefield of ideas.' Srinivasan warned that overregulation could push innovation and the crypto industry overseas.
