YOKOHAMA, Japan -- Nissan Motor on Wednesday reported a net loss of 115.7 billion yen ($782 million) for the April-June fiscal first quarter, as the Japanese automaker continues its restructuring drive while grappling with a 25% automotive tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in April.
The result marks the fourth straight quarter of losses for the company and compares with a profit of 28.5 billion yen the previous year. Sales for the quarter totaled 2.7 trillion yen, down 9.7%.

Tokyo stocks climb in morning after Wall Street gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks climbed Thursday morning, supported by overnight Wall Street gains and U.S. tech giant Apple Inc.'s plan to invest an additional $100 billion to increase U.S. production. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average advanced 319.82 points, or 0.78 percent, from Wednesday to 41,114.68. The broader Topix index was up 25.16 points, or 0.85 percent, at 2,991.73, hitting a record high on an intraday basis for the first time in two weeks. The U.S. dollar briefly strengthened to the upper 147 yen range in Tokyo as it was bought by Japanese companies ahead of the summer holidays, dealers said. At noon, the dollar fetched 147.56-58 yen compared with 147.30-40 yen in New York and 147.55-57 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The euro was quoted at $1.1657-1658 and 172.01-05 yen against $1.1655-1665 and 171.72-82 yen in New York and $1.1581-1582 and 170.88-92 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon. The stock market was lifted by Apple suppliers such as TDK, as the U.S. firm's announcement raised hopes for improvement in their earnings, brokers said. The benchmark Nikkei index was initially pressured by falls in heavyweight chip shares after U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a tariff of about 100 percent on semiconductor imports.

News in Easy English: First convenience store opens on small island in Fukuoka

FUKUOKA -- A small island called Nokonoshima in Hakata Bay now has its first convenience store. This is the first time any of the 10 islands in Fukuoka Prefecture with people living on them has a store like this. The new store is called NocoMart. Nokonoshima is about 12 kilometers around and has about 600 people living on it. Before, people had to take a ferry to the city or wait for delivery trucks to buy food and drinks. The last shop on the island closed in 2019. NocoMart opened on July 18 near the ferry terminal. The store is part of the Yamazaki Shop chain. It is managed by Kotaro Honda and Yuichi Asaba, who both moved to the island from Fukuoka city. The store is small, but it sells about 700 different products. About 100 people come on weekdays and 200 on weekends. A man in his 50s said, "It's really easy now to buy items that had been difficult to buy on a daily basis, such as food, and it's given me peace of mind." A woman in her 60s said, "When I want to eat something sweet, I can buy it right away." She added that it is helpful that there are so many kinds of products. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Asaba said, "I want to keep this going for as long as possible without running into the red. In the future, I would also like to consider offering delivery services."
