Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, representing Yasmeen Wankhede, informed the court that the police had yet to file the required report, prompting the magistrate to issue a show-cause notice. Death penalty for Assam man for murdering college student over romantic rejection
Four years after a 20-year-old college student was murdered with a machete in public, her assailant Rintu Sarmah was sentenced to death by a district sessions court in Assam Thursday. In August 2021, Nandita Saikia, an undergraduate student at Moridhal College in Assam's Dhemaji district, was attacked by Sarmah, then a 30-year-old non-teaching staff member at the college, while she was on her way back home. Two people — her friend and her friend's father — had also been injured in the attack, allegedly after a romantic rejection. The murder had sent shockwaves across the state at the time. On Wednesday, the District and Sessions Judge in Dhemaji had convicted him, and on Thursday, sentenced him to death. The court cited the brutality of the attack and its premeditated nature in his conviction order. 'In this case the dreams of a meritorious young college student were shattered at the age of 20 due to the brutality of the convict who was an employee of the college where the deceased had been studying. The brutality of the convict was premeditated. On the day of occurrence, he collected the murder weapon from PWD on the pretext of carrying out some repairing works in his house and then followed the deceased and the injured to the Dhemaji town. The convict chose the middle of the town to carry out his brutality and it gives a peep into his audacious and wicked mindset,' states the court. The accused gave 'repeated knife blows to the deceased on her head and other parts of body in full public glare and it shows how gruesome it was', the order said. 'The videos of the deceased lying lifeless in a pool of blood in the middle of the town were widely circulated in electronic media causing huge public outrage and outcry throughout the State for immediate justice to the deceased victim and the injured which this court can take judicial notice of. The convict took the young life for rejecting his proposal by the deceased and her family members and it makes the offence even more gruesome and brutal apart from showing his mental sickness. We cannot be oblivious of the fact that the convict was an employee of the college where the deceased was studying,' it adds. It also noted that in his statement under Section 313 of the CrPC, he had denied the incident. 'In his 313 statement the convict has denied the occurrence in its entirety and took the plea that the deceased had died of injuries received by falling from the motor cycle despite knowing fully well that it was him who had committed the gruesome murder of the deceased and the same was done in full public glare. It shows his remorseless mindset and a person of this nature cannot be expected to be reformed,' it stated. The convict will now have the opportunity to appeal against this sentence in the Gauhati High Court.

Barmer Gurukul teacher held for burning two students with hot iron rod
The Rajasthan Police have arrested a teacher at a Gurukul who allegedly burnt two children with hot iron rods for wetting their beds in Barmer district. The students, aged 10 and 11, narrated their ordeal to their parents, who subsequently lodged an FIR. The incident occurred on August 17 at a Gurukul in Harpaliya village under Sedwa police station limits. The teacher allegedly pressed a heated rod on the children's thighs. The Gurukul, which houses students studying Sanskrit and other subjects, has about 30 children on its rolls. On the night of August 18, the two students fled the premises but lost their way before strangers helped them contact their families. Villagers later staged a protest against the teacher. Jeevan Lal Khatri, Circle Officer, Chohtan, said: 'Students left for their home in the middle of the night but couldn't reach. Later, they contacted their family members with the help of strangers. Villagers protested against the action of the teacher. We have arrested the accused teacher named Narayan Giri under Section 151 of CrPC and provisions of Juvenile Justice Act are imposed. Investigation is ongoing and things will be clear soon'. Police said only two children have so far lodged complaints, but they suspect more students may have been assaulted earlier. Some children alleged that the teacher routinely beat them, tied their hands with ropes, and subjected them to physical abuse. This is the first time he allegedly used a hot rod.
