Monroe Police chief to retire after 32 years with department
MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Monroe's longtime police chief will soon call it a career, the city announced Tuesday.
Chief J. Bryan Gilliard, a Union County native, will retire effective May 1, after 32 years of service. He began his career with the Monroe PD in 1993 as a telecommunicator. He then served in various capacities, rising to the rank of captain in 2007, assistant chief in 2010, interim police chief in 2013, and finally chief in 2014.

City officials say Gilliard has led the department through the following initiatives:
Advancing the use of law enforcement technology and community engagement to improve public safety
Opening of the Bobby G. Kilgore Law Enforcement Center in 2023
Earning national accreditation and re-accreditation(s) from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Incorporated (CALEA) since 2007
Advocated for improvements in officer protective equipment and a modernized vehicle fleet
'Serving this City has been the greatest honor of my life,' he said in a statement. 'I am incredibly grateful to the men and women of the Monroe Police Department I've had the pleasure of serving alongside, and I look forward to their continued success for years to come. I want to thank everyone who supported me and this department for their confidence, trust, and encouragement as we provide essential security and protection for all our residents and visitors. I appreciate the support of the citizens of Monroe and their dedication to making Monroe a special place.'
Gilliard earned his bachelor's degree from UNC Charlotte, his master's degree from Pfeiffer University, and the Municipal and County Administration course at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2016. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2009 and completed the FBI Leadership Development Program in 2017.
'Chief Gilliard has selflessly served his department, his City, and his community with honor, courage, and dedication over the last 32 years,' said City Manager Mark Watson. 'We thank him for his service and wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.'
Chief Gilliard has served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Chiefs of Police Association and the North Carolina FBI National Academy Association. He has served as a board member for United Way, American Red Cross, Alliance for Children, Monroe Rotary Club, and Hospice of Union County.

Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher charged with child sex crimes; law firms represent multiple victims across states
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A former middle school principal now facing serious child sex abuse charges in Missouri once worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. According to law enforcement and legal representatives, Cedric Gerald, 48, who most recently served as a principal at Westview Middle School in the Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis County, has been charged with multiple crimes, including sexual trafficking of a child, sexual exploitation of a minor, and possession of child pornography. Medic: 12 injured in reported assault at southwest Charlotte McDonald's At least four Westview Middle students have come forward, alleging Gerald engaged in inappropriate and illegal behavior, including explicit FaceTime calls, sexual contact at school, and harassment. St. Louis County Police said Gerald admitted to several of the accusations. Before working in Missouri, Gerald spent at least 16 years with CMS as a teacher and literacy coach. He later held positions in other districts in North Carolina and Missouri. In response to questions about Gerald's history, CMS issued this statement: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools follows standard hiring procedures. Positions are posted, interviews are conducted, and recommendations to hire are made. All new hires go through a criminal background check, drug test, and fingerprints through the Standard Bureau of Investigation. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Two law firms, identified as Simon Law and the O'Brien Law Firm, are now representing at least six victims from multiple school districts. They're encouraging others who may have been harmed, including outside Missouri, to come forward. 'We have information that his abuse spans more than one school district,' Boyd said in a written statement, released on Tuesday. 'That's why we are investigating Riverview Gardens School District's practices, and how they failed to take proactive and reactive measures to protect students.' Eight-year-old girl killed in head-on Burke County crash with alleged impaired driver: NCSHP
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An eight-year-old girl has died and two men are in critical condition after a head-on crash with a driver who was allegedly impaired, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, troopers responded to the crash on US 70 near Sundown Road. Officials said a 2017 Ford F-150 was going east on US 70 when it crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with a 2022 Kia Forte, which then collided with the guardrail and overturned. Bicyclist fatally struck in York County crash: SCHP The driver of the Ford, 43-year-old Benjamin Jacob Willis, and the driver of the Kia, a 30-year-old man, were both taken to local hospitals in critical condition. Sadly, an eight-year-old girl sitting in the backseat of the Kia died of her injuries at the scene, officials said. Investigators believe Willis was impaired at the time of the crash, and charges against him are pending, according to NCSHP.
