Ayer Kuning polls: Ahmad Zahid pleased with BN-PH collaboration

The Sun26-04-2025

BAGAN DATUK: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed satisfaction with the strong collaboration between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) throughout the 14-day campaign for the Ayer Kuning state by-election.
The UMNO president said cooperation during the campaign was well-executed, similar to previous by-elections in Nenggiri, Kelantan and Mahkota in Johor, which resulted in BN victories.
'Insya-Allah, we will succeed in defending the Ayer Kuning seat, and I pray that Ustaz (Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir) will be successful... may Allah bless and grant it,' he said.
'However, victory would depend on voter turnout, particularly since many Malay voters had recently returned home for the Hari Raya celebrations, and some Chinese voters had just returned for Qingming Festival,' he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister was speaking to reporters after officiating the RISDA MADANI (KARRISMA) Northern Zone 2025 Carnival at Dewan Dato' Mohamed Jamrah, Sungai Sumun here today.
Present were Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, RISDA chairman Manndzri Nasib and RISDA director-general Zainal Azni Zulkifli.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, urged the party machinery to ensure a strong turnout.
'I hope the weather remains clear until the evening so the machinery can encourage voters to go to the polls,' he added.
A total of 19 polling stations with 63 voting streams opened at 8 am for the by-election, with 31,281 voters eligible to cast their ballots today.

China's military conducts patrols in South China Sea, warns Philippines

FILE PHOTO: Chinese structures are pictured in Subi Reef in disputed South China Sea, April 21, 2017. - Photo: Reuters file BEIJING: China's military held joint sea and air patrols in the South China Sea on Saturday (June 14), a spokesperson for the People's Liberation Army's Southern Theater Command said. Spokesperson Tian Junli said in a statement on Sunday (June 15) that the Philippines has courted countries outside the region to organise "joint patrols" and "raised security risks" in the region. "The theater command forces remain on high alert, resolutely safeguarding China's national sovereignty and maritime rights," he said, adding that "all military activities that seek to stir up trouble in the South China Sea or create flashpoints are fully under control." The Philippine embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. The Philippines and the United States conducted joint maritime drills in the South China Sea for a seventh time earlier this month. Tensions have continued to run high between China and the Philippines over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a conduit for more than US$3 trillion of annual ship-borne commerce. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including parts claimed by Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. In 2016 the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled that China's claims were not supported by international law, a decision that Beijing rejects. - Reuters

Umno must remain in govt to push Malay, Bumiputera agenda

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will remain in the federal government to continue championing the Malay and Bumiputera agenda, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would simply allow another party to take its place. "If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. "It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities," he said. Mohamad, who is also the Rembau member of parliament, was speaking after launching the Cheras Umno division delegates meeting here today. He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas. Although the portfolio is traditionally under the Human Resources Ministry, he said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had taken the lead in addressing gaps, particularly affecting Malay youths. "Many are not dropping out because they failed exams, but because they never sat for them. "That's why we introduced the National TVET Policy, the National Tahfiz Policy and several other initiatives," he said. Mohamad said Umno was undertaking internal reforms to adapt to a shifting political landscape, following setbacks in the 2022 general election. "The political reality now is that no party, anywhere in the world, can govern alone. That era has ended. "We must be realistic. Although we have 192 divisions, our strategy should focus on constituencies we can win. "Political idealism can be misleading and dangerous," he said. He also expressed pride in Umno's internal unity, saying it was one of the few stable parties in the country. "No one will support a party that's in disarray. We must maintain harmony and project ourselves as a moderate, peaceful force," he added. – Bernama

GRS ready to face any party in state polls: Hajiji

Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: R Gonzales Text Size: Hajiji and other leaders at the meeting. - Pic by R Gonzales | Daily Express TUARAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is ready to face any opponent in the upcoming 17th State Election. He said this reflects GRS' stance, but any formal decision on political cooperation must be made by the coalition's Supreme Council. Advertisement Hajiji said this after officiating Sulaman Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah's (Gagasan Rakyat) annual conference here on Sunday. Hajiji also agreed with GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who supported the idea of GRS going head-to-head with Barisan Nasional (BN). He added that BN had already indicated a lack of interest in collaborating, and GRS would not force any party into cooperation. Armizan had earlier said he agreed with Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin that GRS and BN should contest separately in the election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
