Overview
The 2026 Lotus Emira coupe is a modern take on the archetypal raw, essential sports car experience. Featuring a mid-engine layout with a choice of either a Toyota-based supercharged V-6 or an AMG-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder (both are good for 400 horsepower) and a compact but highly evolved rear-drive chassis, its competition heritage is palpable. Though the Emira wears fully modern bodywork, and its interior furnishings have evolved in step with modern technology and conveniences, the Emira still prioritizes the act of driving enjoyment above all else. Sadly, Lotus says the current Emira is the last of its gasoline-powered models before the automaker goes all-electric. Get one while you can.
What's New for 2026?
The Emira carries over virtually unchanged, but with the addition of the Emira Clark Edition. Decorated in Lotus' unmistakable green and yellow motif, the Clark Edition is limited to 60 examples. It commemorates the six decades since Jim Clark's record-breaking 1965 racing season, where he took home the Formula 1 title and won the Indy 500, among other victories. Details include a driver's seat in red leather and suede to match Clark's race car, and a passenger seat finished in black. A wood gear knob stands as a nod to the Type 38 Clark drove when he won the 1965 Indy 500.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2026 Lotus Emira is expected to start around $103,000 and go up to $153,750 depending on the trim and options.

There's no getting around the appeal and exclusivity of the new Emira Clark Edition. But unless you've got cash to burn or a cagey plan to preserve it for future generations (or for profit), you can get the same performance from the standard V-6 model. True, the AMG-powered Emira First Edition is tempting, but it's paired with an automatic, whereas the V-6 offers a manual. And in a car this raw, it seems forgoing the thrill of shifting for yourself would be a grave error.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The mid-engine Emira can be had with one of two powerplants. A Toyota-sourced supercharged 3.5-liter V-6 carried over from the outgoing Evora GT makes 400 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with either a six-speed torque-converter automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. A turbocharged four-cylinder sourced from Mercedes-AMG makes the same 400 horsepower but boosts torque output to 354 pound-feet. It feeds the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the only gearbox pairing. Unlike most other modern sports cars, the Emira forgoes electric power steering for a hydraulically assisted setup that provides unsurpassed feel and feedback. During our initial test drive, we praised the Emira's balanced handling and brilliant steering, and we marveled at its commitment to driver involvement. The Emira is at once more refined than the Evora GT it replaces and just as quirky; the manual transmission's lever action needs smoothing out, and the brakes are grabby and difficult to modulate smoothly.
0–60-MPH Times
At our test track, a manual First Edition test car hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and completed the quarter-mile run in 12.7 seconds at 111 mph. That's pretty quick, but the 718 Cayman GTS, which has a similar horsepower rating and mid-engine layout, managed to do it in 3.8 seconds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Emira yet, but the current model earned ratings of 16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
With a simple design and seating for two, the Emira's interior is both minimalistic and intimate. The driver faces a squared-off steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The material quality looks upscale, far better than in previous Lotus models, and we're glad to see physical switchgear for the climate controls. Likewise, the automaker also attempts to make its latest sports car easier to get in and out of by making the door sills narrower and the door openings larger than they were in the Evora GT. Other practical improvements include a pair of cupholders in the center console and storage bins in the doors that can each allegedly accommodate a half-liter bottle. There are also 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seats and another 5 cubes in a storage bay behind the engine.

Infotainment and Connectivity
The Emira's infotainment system runs through a 10.2-inch touchscreen mounted in the middle of the dashboard. Apart from controls on the steering wheel, there is a knob on the center console to adjust volume and play or pause audio; otherwise, there are no physical controls for the infotainment system. Along with 12-volt and USB charging ports, the sports car features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone functionality.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Breaking with Lotus tradition, the Emira is offered with a host of optional driver-assistance technology. 963 RSP Revealed: Meet Porsche's Street-Legal Le Mans Hypercar
For years, the difference between road car and race car was a bit more nebulous than it is now. Especially at places like Le Mans, it wasn't until the 1960s that the paths for road cars and top-flight prototypes started to diverge. Now, the stuff you see at the pointy end of the grid at La Sarthe has more in common with a Formula 1 car than, say, a 911. Which is precisely why the Porsche 963 RSP is so remarkable. This is a real-deal 963 LMDh car , tamed just enough for road use, wearing a set of French license plates. We spoke with those who turned a crazy idea into reality. Photo by: Porsche At last year's IMSA-season-ending Petit Le Mans, a group of Porsche folks got together to talk about how they could commemorate the 50th anniversary of the company's creation of a roadgoing 917. Porsche made the car for Count Rossi, heir to the Martini & Rossi liquor fortune. Despite a fully-trimmed interior, Rossi's was a full-on Le Mans-winning race car for the road. The Italian managed to get a license plate from the state of Alabama, of all places, and actually enjoyed the car on the street. 'October 12th was the very specific day where a couple of people sat together and we were brainstorming. 'How could we reimagine such a story as of today?'' recalls Timo Resch, CEO of Porsche Cars North America, in a virtual media roundtable. 'And we started on that day project where only very few people were involved.' They created what in Germany is referred to as a submarine project—one involving as few people as possible, existing beneath the visible surface, only emerging when absolutely necessary. The team quickly deemed creating a fully road-homologated version of the 963 impossible. A car like this is just too far divorced from the requirements of street cars, so Porsche would have to alter it to an unrecognizable state to get it homologated. Instead, Porsche would create a one-off that hewed as closely to the race car as possible, and a car that could get special dispensation for very limited road use. Photo by: Porsche Obviously, Porsche would have to work with Porsche Penske Motorsport to make the car a reality, and the team decided that Roger would be the car's ideal owner. The name RSP are the captain's initials, Roger Searle Penske. Porsche Motorsport in Germany prepared a new chassis for the 963 RSP—this is not a reused tub from a race car. Under designer Grant Larson, Porsche Exclusiv Manufaktur did the design work, but the car was actually put together at Porsche Cars North America's headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. There, it was worked on behind temporary walls, so the other technicians wouldn't know what was going on. 'A lot of changes have been made to suspension and systems to make it more tame and more like a road car, but still keep the pedigree of the 963 race car,' says Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport. 'On top of this, what the restoration group in Atlanta has been able to bring forward is a level of quality that is not aligned with the race car at all, whatsoever.' This isn't to say the race cars aren't Penske Perfect. But the finish on their carbon-fiber body panels is rough, and wrapped simply with vinyl. Here, PCNA craftspeople sanded down the carbon fiber bodywork and painted it in the same Martini Silver as the Count Rossi 917. They also trimmed the interior in Alcantara matching the tan of the 917 as well, and there are other nods to road usability. Racing rulebooks require huge vents over the wheel wells to prevent the car getting blown over in the case of a spin. For the RSP, Porsche created pieces that close in gaps, while still allowing for some ventilation. Also, the team had to make accommodations for front and rear license plates. Despite such niceties, this is very much just a 963. You get a 4.6-liter V-8 twin-turbo V-8 paired with a spec hybrid system consisting of an electric motor and power electronics from Bosch, and an XTrac seven-speed sequential transmission. The battery is a small, 800-volt lithium ion unit from Fortescue Zero that bolts into the carbon-fiber tub from below. The engine is derived from the naturally aspirated V-8 in the Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar, which itself was a development of the RS Spyder LMP2 car of the 2000s. It shares about 80 percent of its components with the 918 Spyder's engine, so adapting it for road use wasn't as difficult as it could have been with a bespoke racing engine. Still, adapting the V-8 to run on pump gas was a significant calibration challenge. Porsche Penske Motorsport also tweaked the deployment of the hybrid system to be smoother, better suited for low-speed driving on the street. Porsche doesn't quote a power figure for the 963 RSP, but the race car is capable of around 700 horsepower, split between the hybrid system and the V-8 depending on balance-of-performance. Porsche 963 RSP 20 Source: Porsche The 963 RSP sits on the same Michelin treaded rain tires the race cars use in inclement conditions, and they're wrapped around 18-inch OZ wheels. Porsche set the ride height as high as it could, and put the dampers in their softest settings to make the car drivable on the street, though one imagines the ride quality will be a bit firm still. And yes, the 963 RSP has turn signals and a horn. Famously, the 917 starts on a key drilled out to save weight. Starting the 963 is a bit more complicated—it requires a laptop, and the assistance of a race team that knows how the car works. So, Penske will need to do a bit of planning ahead if he wants to exercise the car, though as Porsche points out, he owns a race track and a race team, so using the 963 RSP won't be too difficult. Porsche got special permission from French authorities to drive the car on the roads around Le Mans, and the license plates it wears are for automakers testing prototypes. Longtime Porsche works driver and current brand ambassador Timo Bernhard drove the car on the roads near the circuit alongside the Rossi 917 earlier today. 'That was an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime,' he said in a statement. 'Driving down a public road with a 917 beside me—it felt unreal. The car behaved perfectly—it felt a little friendlier and more forgiving than the normal 963—and felt super special and a lot more comfortable, especially as I was not needing all my safety gear.' Penske will have to wait a bit before he can take the car home. It will be on display at Le Mans, and then at the Porsche Museum. Next month, Porsche plans to take it to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to run it up the hillclimb. Then, the car will head to California for Monterey Car Week in August for more road drives, and the final handover to the Captain. For now, at least, Porsche doesn't have any specific further plans for another roadgoing 963, but that doesn't mean it might not make one. 'Of course we will not build exactly the same car again because of the nature of the project… but as I said before, never say never,' says Urs Kuratle, head of the Porsche LMDh project. 'As Porsche, we like to sell cars first of all, and if there is an opportunity or possibility to do it again at a later stage, why not? But at the moment, there's nothing planned.' UK government makes major driveway law change set to affect millions of homes
Labour has just rolled out a major driveway law change which is set to benefit thousands of UK homes. No more planning applications are needed for EV charging point installations as the government cuts red tape. VW's New EV Platform Still Supports Combustion Engines
It's been a little over four years since Volkswagen announced SSP, its all-encompassing electric vehicle architecture. The Scalable Systems Platform was originally expected to be ready by now, but it has been delayed until later this decade. Multiple reports from German media attributed the setback to VW's software division, Cariad. However, the automotive conglomerate is now ready to discuss SSP, and there's a surprise. Although SSP is primarily an electric platform, it will also support combustion engines. VW Group plans to introduce range extenders, with internal combustion engines functioning solely as generators to charge the battery. Like the BMW i3, Mazda's rotary MX-30 , and the upcoming Ramcharger, these engines won't have a mechanical link to the wheels. Nissan's e-Power technology follows a similar principle: the gasoline engine powers the battery, not the drivetrain. Its newly established Scout brand will launch a pickup and an SUV equipped with naturally aspirated ICE generators . In China, the recently unveiled ID. Era concept previews a three-row SUV developed with SAIC, also featuring a gasoline-powered generator. SSP is a major initiative for VW. It will serve as the foundation for models across all its brands and will eventually replace all existing electric platforms. A teaser image shows five different body styles, ranging from a city hatchback to a large SUV. Automotive News reports that there will be eight derivatives in total, covering every segment of the market. Next-generation EVs based on SSP are expected to begin rolling out in 2026, likely debuting in China before arriving in Europe a year later. We may not see this technology in Europe, where VW CEO Thomas Schäfer believes plug-in hybrids are the more viable option. He told Autocar that range extenders are expensive to engineer, while today's plug-in hybrids already offer decent electric range and fast charging. It's scheduled to arrive near the end of the decade and will coexist with the combustion-engine Mk8 for several years. VW may keep the current Golf on sale until the mid-2030s . The electric Golf will be built in Wolfsburg, while production of the ICE model will move to the Puebla plant in Mexico in 2027. With SSP's key specifications now finalized, VW Group CEO Oliver Blume stated: 'We aim to be the global technology driver for the automotive industry. SSP will play a crucial role in this. We've reached an important milestone in developing our electric future platform. Now it's full steam ahead to implementation.'
