Shafali Verma returns to top 10 in ICC Women's T20I Batting Rankings

India Gazettea day ago
New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): India opener Shafali Verma has moved back into the top 10 of the ICC Women's T20I Player Rankings for batters in the latest update, as per the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Wrapping up the five-match T20I series with 176 runs at a strike rate of 158.56, Shafali was the second-highest run-getter behind fellow opener Smriti Mandhana.
The 21-year-old was the star with the bat, top-scoring with 75 off 41 in India's last-ball defeat and has jumped four spots to ninth place with 655 points.
Another key contributor in India's 3-2 series win, Arundhati Reddy, who snapped six wickets during the course of the series, also made gains. Reddy, who scalped two wickets in the final T20I, leaped four spots to the 39th place in the Bowling Rankings and 26 spots to 80th among the All-Rounders.
Multiple England stars also made positive strides. Spinner Charlie Dean broke into the top 10 Bowling Rankings after a Player of the Match winning 3/23 in the last match, making a leap of eight spots to share sixth place with Nashra Sandhu and Georgia Wareham.
Linsey Smith also gained nine places to the 38th place while pacer Issy Wong jumped seven places to the 50th. Emily Arlott, who made her England debut earlier this summer against the West Indies, improved 15 places to 67th.
Sophia Dunkley, who was England's top scorer with 151 runs, gained seven points to 19th place in the Batting Rankings after vital contributions of 22 and 46 in the last two games.
Meanwhile, opener Tammy Beaumont continued her recent surge, jumping 19 places to the 45th spot. (ANI)

‘Australia found out against India…': Ravi Shastri tells England to ‘focus on winning'

England may have prevailed in the thrilling third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India but it came at a cost. Ben Stokes' side have been docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points for their slow over rate during the 22-run victory at Lord's also fined 10 percent of their match fees. England's points tally has thus fallen from 24 to 22 and former India head coach Ravi Shastri has said that these deductions do matter. 'It hurts, as Australia found out in the first cycle of the World Test Championship,' he said on the ICC review. Australia had been docked points due to over rate in the second Test of the 2020/21 series at home against India. They ended up finishing third behind eventual champions New Zealand on the table. 'They had a slow over rate against India and it cost them the second place. New Zealand qualified for that final,' said Shastri. However, Shastri also said that while teams need to be aware of their over rate, England's docked points might not matter much if they keep winning. 'So you've got to be fully aware about all this, there will be certain games where they will probably make up for it. But I think more than the over rate, you have to think of winning. If you focus on that, then come the last six months, you can probably try and just, get those points or something of that sort. You've got to win. That is more important. If you keep winning, that won't matter,' he said. England staved off a sensational resistance from the Indian lower order to win by 22 runs and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 193, India were reduced to 82/7 in the first session of the final day. Ravindra Jadeja then became the anchor as India's last three wickets batted for 50.1 overs and took the match right into the second half of the final session. It all ended rather freakishly, though, with Mohammed Siraj falling to Shoaib Bashir due to the ball dribbling behind him to the stumps despite coming off the middle of his bat.

‘He didn't do anything wrong': Stuart Broad says Mohammed Siraj getting fined for celebrating Ben Duckett's wicket at Lord's was ‘ridiculous'

Former England bowler Stuart Broad said that Mohammed Siraj getting fined for his celebration of Ben Duckett's wickets in the 4th Day of the Lord's Test was ridiculous. The Indian bowler was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for his aggressive celebrations after dismissing the England opener. 'Siraj got 15% fined for his altercation with Duckett which I thought was ridiculous… He didn't do anything particularly wrong apart from celebrating a huge wicket that got his team back into the game,' Broad said on For The Love Of Cricket podcast with Jos Buttler. Broad had tweeted on Sunday about the issue as well, saying, 'Find this ridiculous. Siraj 15% for aggressive celebration. Gill swears live on tv & carries on and what? It's either both or neither. Players aren't and shouldn't be robots but consistency is key.' The Gill incident that Broad was referring to here was the confrontation that the Indian skipper had with Zak Crawley in the last over of Day 3. The fiery exchange in the final over had a lot of dramatic visuals, with India's captain Gill in the thick of it. Annoyed by Crawley's time-wasting tactics that ensured India just got in one over as opposed to two that they would have hoped, Gill ran from the slips, hurled verbal abuses at Crawley and Ben Duckett, pointed fingers, and mock-clapped at Crawley. The England openers also stood their ground, and gave it all back. The tension then boiled over to the next day with the Siraj-Duckett incident which led to the India bowler's fine. Siraj proceeded to roar right in Duckett's face, his eyes bulging out of their sockets and veins popping. There was even a light shoulder contact. Duckett didn't seem to really look at the bowler at any point while Siraj did the opposite for him. The Indian pacer even got a little talking-to from the umpires after the whole exercise. An ICC statement on the incident noted that the Indian pacer 'was guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.' The ICC statement added: 'After the dismissal, Siraj celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through and made contact as Duckett began his walk back to the Lord's long room.'
