Heartbreak for Shelbourne as 90th minute goal ends Europa League dream

Extra.ie2 days ago
Shelbourne's Europa League journey ended in heartbreak as a 90th minute goal for Rijeka gave them a 3-1 win on the night and a 4-3 win on aggregate.
It was an amazing atmosphere in Drumcondra as the likes of Bertie Ahern, Heimir Hallgrimsson and Stephen Cluxton were in attendance on a sunny August night as Tolka Park once again played host to another historic night in European football for Irish football.
After doing the hard work in their 2-1 win on the Adriatic coast last week, Joey O'Brien's side knew the onus wasn't on them to score and in the opening quarter they played the tie masterfully. Mipo Odubeko, Ali Coote and Kerr McInroy ran tirelessly to put pressure on the Rijeka centre-backs and the Croatian league and cup double winners resorted to hitting many hopeless long balls in the opening stages. Shels had a decent shout for a penalty in the opening exchanges as Ali Coote went through on goal after Rijeka failed to deal with a long ball. The Scot was trying to control it when he went down in the area by Rijeka 'keeper and captain Martin Zlomislić but Romanian referee Marian Barbu and the VAR team didn't deem it enough for a penalty.
As the sides went into the water break it would be fair to say that Shels had the upper hand, though they needed to get a hold of possession and that's what they did. A couple of nice crosses came in troubling the Croatian defence but as Shels grew into the game, Rijeka's star man Toni Fruk came up with a sensational goal. Fruk, who missed last week's match with suspension produced the moment of magic at Tolka Park shortly after the half hour mark when a Rijeka attacking move ended up with him being teed up for a volley just outside the box and Fruk lashed it home past Wessel Speel to give the visitors the lead.
Shels began to look leggier, and halftime couldn't have come at a better time. The break allowed Joey O'Brien to introduce last week's hero John Martin came on at halftime for Ali Coote as he and Odubeko were at the centre of everything good for Shels going forward. Despite that Rijeka still allowed to grow more and more into the game as more space became available to them. The relentless harrying and defending in the first half caught up on Shels as their bodies became tired as the sun set in Dublin.
Those tired bodies starting gave Rijeka a lot of space and that led to another moment of magic for the visitors, this time from Tiago Dantas. The Portuguese midfielder formerly of Bayern Munich picked up the ball over 35 yards from goal and he absolutely walloped the ball past Speel into the top corner to give the Croatians the 2-0 lead on the night and an aggregate lead in the tie. As the clock ticked on it was John Martin that was the brightest spark for Shels and the Kilkenny man won his side a penalty after a long VAR check as he was pulled down in the box by Rijeka fullback Ante Orec. Odubeko stepped up and hit a frankly poor penalty that crept under Zlomislic into the bottom corner to get Shels back level on aggregate.
However just moments later Orec made up for his mistake as he was inexplicably given acres of space and enough time to take the ball down, turn and drill a shot across Speel into the bottom corner to give the Croats another lead on aggregate, this time in the 90th minute. Shelbourne threw the kitchen sink at Rijeka but that was to be the decisive goal as their Europa League journey ended in heartbreak, losing 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.
However, they still have something to play for in Europe as they will play the winner of Linfield and Faroe Island side Vikingur in the Europa Conference League play-off round next week for a chance at reaching the league phase of that competition.

Stephen Bradley's Ireland message after another piece of Josh Honohan magic

Stephen Bradley is convinced that Josh Honohan deserves a place in Heimir Hallgrímsson's Ireland squad when it is named later this month for the September World Cup qualifiers. And he's not just saying that because Honohan, in front of Heimir Hallgrímsson on Thursday night, scored a screamer in Shamrock Rovers' 4-0 Europa Conference League win over Ballkani of Kosovo. It was thanks in a large part to his European performances last year that Honohan caught the eye of the Ireland boss. He wasn't capped in the June window, and was carrying a knock ahead of the Luxembourg game, but Bradley believes he deserves a regular spot in Hallgrímsson's plans. 'I've said from day one (that Honohan should be in the squad). It's not a reaction to the goal; over two legs he was our best player by a mile,' said the Rovers boss. 'I think tonight he shows why Josh can play at an elite level, I feel. There's no doubt in my mind. 'He's six foot, lightning quick, both footed, good quality off both sides, defensively good…I can keep going. Josh is an elite level player and tonight he was brilliant.' Ballkani did their best to stifle Honohan by overloading Rovers' left-hand-side - but that just meant there was more space for Rovers to attack them in other areas. 'They changed their whole system, their team to try and stop Josh,' said Bradley. 'They gave up their midfield and played three defenders… well, not out-and-out defenders, players that would have played there a lot, and all on Josh's side to try and combat that side. 'And we knew that. But what that did was unbalance them elsewhere. And then they freed him up in the second-half and he got joy out of that. 'But they definitely looked to stop Josh. Looking at last week, they would have said he was our threat, so they tried to stop him. But we were levels above and he was brilliant.' 'We fancy our chances against anyone here (in Tallaght),' insisted Bradley, 'but the key is taking it here. 'We'll have to go over there, obviously and perform a lot better than we did last week (in Kosovo). We won't get away with that again. But if we take it back here, game on. 'We've seen throughout the years, especially last year in the campaign, we're a match for anybody here. When we get a right, and we get that energy off the crowd, it's very hard to beat us here.' Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers' upcoming game against Shelbourne, scheduled for the weekend of August 22, has been postponed on account of both teams being involved in the play-offs. Rovers' Euro goal hero took PAY-CUT to extend spell with League of Ireland side

Stephen Bradley has paid tribute to evergreen striker Rory Gaffney after the 35-year-old's latest heroics - and revealed that he took a pay-cut to prolong his stay at Tallaght Stadium. Gaffney took his tally for the season to 12 with a classy brace in Thursday's Europa Conference League demolition of Kosovan side Ballkani. He scored either side of half-time in a 4-0 win, which wiped out Ballkani's 1-0 first-leg advantage. Gaffney struggled for game-time last year, playing only eight games in the Premier Division and missing out on the European league phase campaign with achilles and ankle injuries. Bradley admitted that he had doubts about whether the Galwayman would be able for another campaign with the League of Ireland giants. However, he was convinced by the striker to offer him a new deal, with Gaffney giving some assurances and concessions in the process. 'You always have doubts,' said Bradley after the veteran's outstanding display on Thursday night. 'When you're hitting your mid-30s and you have the injuries he's had, of course there's a little bit of doubt thinking. 'But I also know Rory, I trust him and the conversations are very honest. 'I'm willing to come back, I'm willing to take a pay cut. If I'm injured, I'll walk away'. Click this link or scan the QR code to receive the latest League of Ireland news and top stories from the Irish Mirror. If you don't like our community, you can check out any time you like. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice . 'I trust everything he says. In pre-season, we spoke all the way through it. He managed himself. 'There's always that bit of doubt, there has to be at his age. But Rory is so matter-of-fact. If he tells you something, you believe him. 'And he's not saying it just to bullshit you. He wouldn't do that. He's not that type. When he was talking to me, he was telling me the truth.' Bradley added that Gaffney could have walked away from Rovers, with two clubs offering him the security of two-year deals. When it was put to the Rovers boss that few players would agree to a pay-cut, he said: 'No, not many. I think that probably sums up the career he's had. 'I said he could have walked away and had them two contracts, two-year deals and been comfortable. 'But he wants to....(he's said) 'I want to win things. I want to taste Europe. I want to win the league. I want to win the cup. I want to win things. I'm nearly there and when I'm finished, I want to finish winning things'. 'You have to admire that. The other job will be negotiating for him next year!' Bradley described Gaffney on Thursday night as 'unplayable' - as the former Mervue, Limerick, Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers, Salford City and Walsall man tormented the Ballkani defence. He even had a pop back at Arber Potoku after he scored his first, in retaliation for the defender's reaction to a block on an earlier Gaffney shot. 'He's so cut throat, Rory,' said Bradley. 'If you know him, he's so matter of fact. Rory would be looking at him (Potoku), and be, 'You're in trouble now'. Don't poke the bear, and your man pokes him.' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Besiktas survive scare to knock out St Pat's

BESIKTAS ADVANCED against St Patrick's Athletic after suffering a scare in their Uefa Conference League third round qualifier in Istanbul tonight. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side eventually won 3-2 on the night and 7-3 on aggregate, but it was a less-than-straightforward progression. After winning the first leg 4-1 in Dublin, the Turkish side might have been expecting another routine victory this evening. But first-half goals from Conor Carty and Ryan McLaughlin made it 2-0 to the Saints on the night and 4-3 on aggregate, as the Irish side threatened an unlikely comeback. Former Bolton youngster Carty opened the scoring with a penalty in the third minute. After a VAR check, Emirhan Topçu was adjudged to have handballed Jake Mulraney's cross, and the ex-Ireland U21 international sent goalkeeper Mert Günok the wrong way from the spot. Besiktas' defence failed to deal with Barry Baggley's lofted ball into the box, and it eventually fell to McLaughin, who fired home first time after Joe Redmond did well to win a header in the area.
