Plans for new offence to crack down on promoting Channel crossings online
The offence would also outlaw the promise of illegal working being promoted online and could carry a large fine.
It comes as the Government grapples with a record number of migrants arriving in the UK after crossing the English Channel.
On Wednesday, arrivals passed more than 25,000 for the year so far, a record for this point in the year.
Assisting illegal immigration to the UK is already a crime, but officials believe the changes will give more powers to police and other agencies to disrupt criminal gangs.
According to analysis by the Home Office, around 80% of migrants arriving to the UK by small boat told officials they used social media during their journey, including to contact agents linked to people smuggling gangs.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'Selling the false promise of a safe journey to the UK and a life in this country – whether on or offline – simply to make money, is nothing short of immoral.
'These criminals have no issue with leading migrants to life-threatening situations using brazen tactics on social media. We are determined to do everything we can to stop them, wherever they operate.
The National Crime Agency already works with social media companies to remove posts promoting crossings, with more than 8,000 taken offline in 2024.
NCA director general of operations Rob Jones said the proposed new offence will give them more options of how to target gangs and their business models.
Previous cases that could have been targeted under the proposed offence include a Preston-based smuggler jailed for 17 years for posting videos of migrants thanking him for his help.
Albanian smugglers who used social media to promote £12,000 'package deals' for accommodation and a job in the UK on arrival would also be in scope.
The Conservatives said it was 'too little, too late' and that only their proposal to automatically deport people who enter Britain via unauthorised routes can tackle small boat crossings.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: 'Tinkering at the edges won't fix the problem.
'Labour still has no clear plan to deter illegal entry, no effective enforcement and no strategy to speed up removals. This is a panicked attempt to look tough after months of doing nothing.
'The only clear and enforceable plan is the Conservative Deportation Bill, a no-nonsense strategy that allows us to detain illegal arrivals immediately and remove them without delay. The British public deserve focused action, not more of Labour's dithering.'

Teachers need protecting from violence with attacks on rise by children
The Scottish Government's annual crime survey showed 31 per cent of violent crimes are carried by under-16s. No one deserves to be assaulted at their place of work. But for teachers, it's becoming a daily concern in some schools. At a time when violence in society is in long-term decline, one-in-three violent offences in Scotland is now committed by children – with attacks on teachers blamed for the massive rise. A quarter of all violent offences are carried out by children against adults in their place of work – with teacher assaults understood to be the majority of these incidents. It can't be repeated too many times that the majority of pupils are hard-working, polite and want to enjoy their time at school. But there remains a minority who seem to revel in the fact that discipline in some classrooms – such as the threat of exclusion – has been removed almost entirely. Many parents will be left scratching their heads over a policy which allows regular troublemakers to avoid consequences. For many years, well-meaning government ministers and local council education chiefs were tied to the mantra of 'inclusiveness'. This misguided policy made it almost impossible to exclude the worst-behaved children. On paper this might have sounded like a good idea. But in the real world it gave a free pass for bad behaviour. It is teachers and well-behaved pupils who are left to deal with the inevitable breakdown in school discipline. If some pupils are repeatedly violent, they must be removed from the classroom for the benefit of others. Classrooms can't be run for the benefit of the worst behaved. Teachers and parents understand. So why doesn't the government? Poverty gamble Gordon Brown's record as chancellor in cutting poverty was second to none. Many people like a flutter but gambling firm profits are also based on misery. Oil and gas firms pay a super tax in recognition of the damage done by their industry. Taxing gambling firms more to scrap the two child tax is a cause everyone should back.

Chancellor Visits Port Talbot to Outline Plans for £143m Funding to Secure Coal Tips
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to use a visit to Port Talbot to outline how £143 million of UK Government funding will secure more than 130 disused coal tips in Wales. Disused coal tips present severe risks from landslides or flooding. Last November, a disused coal tip in Cwmtillery, Blaenau Gwent, partially collapsed, forcing around 40 homes and families to be evacuated. The £118 million provided at the Spending Review by the Chancellor comes in addition to £25 million from last year's Autumn Budget, amounting to £143 million to deliver funding to protect existing homes whilst enabling new areas of land to be secured for future house building by the Welsh Government. When combined with funding from the Welsh Government, £220 million has now been earmarked to make coal tips in Wales safe. These areas previously may not have been in scope for new homes due to the presence of these coal tips but by securing tips and minimising the risk of their collapse, new homes could now be built. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said: 'I know the scars that coal tip disasters have left on Welsh communities. This £143 million investment will protect families and communities from the risks posed by disused coal tips, whilst opening up sites to build new homes for hard-working Welsh families. 'These sites need to be safe, and this funding demonstrates how we are delivering our Plan for Change, putting the safety of working people first and supporting economic growth.' Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said: 'Ensuring coal tips across Wales remain safe is of the utmost importance. We want to ensure that communities who are close to coal tips can be confident that their homes and businesses are properly protected. 'This £118 million is in addition to £25 million which has already been provided by the UK Government and is an example of how two governments working in partnership are delivering for the people of Wales.' Welsh Government Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford said: 'We welcome the extra investment from the UK Government for this vital work to protect communities living with the legacy of our industrial past. This builds upon previous years of Welsh Government funding and brings combined Welsh and UK Government funding to £220 million. We have long made the case for fair funding to address the impact of coal tips, protect homes, businesses and create new economic opportunities.' Salman Iftikhar wept in the dock after he was sentenced for hurling death threats and racist abuse at Virgin Atlantic cabin crew during a flight to Lahore, Pakistan A thug who threatened to gang rape a Virgin Atlantic stewardess and set her alight is a "super flash" recruitment tycoon whose business went bust with £17million worth of debts, it has emerged. Salman Iftikhar, who also has two wives, told flight attendant Angie Walsh she would be dragged out of her hotel room, gang raped and set alight. Fellow passengers in first class watched as Iftikhar - flying with one of his spouses and three children - repeatedly called Ms Walsh a "f***ing bitch" during the flight from London Heathrow to Lahore, Pakistan. Iftikhar, 37, later threatened to blow-up the five-star hotel at which the cabin crew were set to stay. However, a court heard this week no action was taken against the recruitment boss after the plane arrived in Pakistan - and he was only arrested at his £900,000 detached home in Iver, Buckinghamshire, after his holiday. But the yob was finally caged for 15 months at Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday after admitting making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment. The judge took into account Iftikhar's six previous convictions, including a common assault, a record she described as "lengthy and appalling". And it has since emerged the father of three kept a range of expensive cars - from a Range Rover, Bentley and Royles Royce - on his driveway at the time of his arrest. He lived in the six-bedroom home with wife Erum Salman, 38, and together the pair run a London-based staffing company which provides training to businesses working in customer service and manufacturing. But according to those known to the Buckinghamshire couple, the pair had a "rocky marriage and would argue quite a bit" - with police being called in one instance. Images on social media imply a different story, though, as the dad is seen posing in front of a royal blue Royles Royce kitted out with a white leather interior in one snap. Other images show a Range Rover, Bentley and a Mercedes parked outside the home of the six-bedroom property. Yet, the recruitment boss, despite being very wealthy, had a failed business venture that has left him millions of pounds in debt. The business mogul previously owned an aviation recruitment business, however it went into administration owing more than £11m to HMRC and £6.885m to HSBC. The company, called Core Labour Supply Limited (CLSL), had a rapid rise and quickly started having a turnover of almost £90m in 2022. It meant Iftikhar was able to continue enjoying his taste for the high life - paying himself dividends of almost £1m a year between 2018 and 2021. The business, though, was badly affected by Covid and two of his biggest customers, which accounted for 35 per cent, left. A neighbour of Iftikhar - who asked not to be named - revealed to the Daily Mail: "He's definitely very flash, someone who likes to flaunt his wealth. How he made his money is beyond me, he ran a recruitment consultancy but I didn't really tend to see him leave for work. He was around the house most of the time." Iftikhar wept in court when he was sentenced on Tuesday. Ms Recorder Annabel Darlow KC said: "Your threats to kill were made in the presence of children, specifically your three young children. "These were threats made with significant violence. Your children had to be comforted by cabin crew staff while you made those threats. "Ms Walsh has given up a job which she has loved for 14 months, but thankfully has now returned to work. This was a sustained incident which involved repeated racist abuse to Ms Walsh. "You have a lengthy and appalling record of misconduct. You have not addressed the underlying cause of this for many years, that is your drug and alcohol problem. Given your lifestyle and your ability to earn money, your harm and risk has not moved. This was an appalling incident which has caused long lasting and devastating consequences."
