A new Covid-19 subvariant NB.1.8.1 has been making headlines across the globe as it has been showing signs of spreading more widely. Numerous cases have been reported in the US following a surge of cases observed in China. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that this strain has been discovered in international travelers at various US airports.
The earliest cases in the US date back to late March and early April, and were detected through a screening program at airports for arriving international travelers. "CDC is aware of reported cases of COVID-19 NB.1.8.1 in China and is in regular contact with international partners," a CDC spokesperson told CBS News last week.
The spokesperson added that, so far, too few US sequences have been reported of NB.1.8.1 to be included in the agency's variant estimates dashboard. NB.1.8.1 is a newly identified subvariant of the Omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Although the World Health Organization has not designated it as a "variant of concern," health officials are monitoring it closely because of its swift transmission and possible implications for public health.

What are the symptoms of new Covid variant?
NB.1.8.1 is associated with symptoms that are "broadly similar to those seen in earlier strains of the virus," Subhash Verma, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, told CBS News in an emailed statement. Commonly reported symptoms include respiratory issues such as cough and sore throat, as well as systemic effects like fever and fatigue, he said.

People infected with NB.1.8.1 have reported a variety of symptoms, some of which differ from those seen with earlier versions of the virus. Common early symptoms include:
Persistent low-grade hyperthermia: Instead of high fevers, many individuals experience a sustained, mild elevation in body temperature (between 37.6°C and 38.1°C), without the usual signs such as sweating or rapid breathing. This suggests a possible disruption in the body's temperature regulation.

Upper respiratory symptoms: Similar to other Omicron subvariants, NB.1.8.1 often causes sore throat, cough, runny nose, and mild fever.
Gastrointestinal issues: Some people report nausea, reduced appetite, and digestive discomfort.
Neurological effects: Headaches, dizziness, and trouble concentrating have been observed in certain cases.
Fatigue and malaise: Significant tiredness and muscle weakness have made everyday tasks difficult for some.
Sleep disturbances and anxiety: In the UK, some individuals infected with the closely related JN.1 variant have reported experiencing anxiety and trouble sleeping.
How did the new Covid strain reach US?
Most of the newly identified Covid-19 cases in the United States have been traced back to travelers from nine countries: China, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, France, the Netherlands, and Spain. Testing for the variant was carried out on individuals who voluntarily provided nasal swabs at airports between April 22 and May 12.
Health officials have also detected cases of the variant in Ohio, Rhode Island, and Hawaii, as well as earlier cases in California and Washington dating back to late March and early April. Despite these findings, there has been no corresponding increase in Covid-19 positivity rates nationwide; in fact, recent data shows a 12% decline in the number of positive test results.

"Data indicates that NB.1.8.1 does not lead to more severe illness compared to previous variants, although it appears to have a growth advantage, suggesting it may spread more easily," Subash Verma told CBS News. "In other words, it is more transmissible."
"What they're seeing in China, Hong Kong and some other areas where this variant has really surged, is an increase in hospitalization, but that seems to be more to do with just a standard summer surge that we've been seeing," Edwards explained, adding the available data is still preliminary, but that the variant "doesn't seem to be more severe," Dr. Amy Edwards, assistant professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University said.
What about the Covid booster shot?
Despite thelatest variant displaying high transmissibility, the Trump administration has ended Covid vaccine recommendation for health kids and pregnant women. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration announced it will continue to authorize updated COVID-19 vaccines for seniors and individuals with underlying health conditions—such as pregnancy or diabetes. However, vaccine manufacturers will now be required to conduct extensive new clinical trials before the vaccines can be approved for broader public use. As a result, many Americans without preexisting conditions may not have access to the updated shots this fall.
Verma warned that the new restrictions could have wide-ranging public health consequences.

"While more than 100 million Americans are still expected to qualify under the new guidelines, the administration's decision adds new hurdles for the general public," he said. "A key concern is that the FDA's requirement for updated clinical trials may delay booster availability for lower-risk individuals, potentially discouraging some from getting vaccinated. The policy could also sow confusion and lower vaccination rates, especially if people are unsure about their eligibility or concerned about insurance coverage—particularly given that some manufacturers plan to charge high prices."
Edwards noted that the updated recommendations lack clarity, CBS reported.
"Some of the language around pre-existing conditions is quite vague," she said. "It's also unclear which variants will be included in this year's vaccine, especially considering uncertainty about which vaccine trials will move forward."
The new COVID-19 vaccine policy was introduced by the FDA under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has previously expressed skepticism about vaccines.
"Secretary Kennedy has said, 'We're not taking away your vaccines; we're going to be transparent.' But in reality, access is being restricted," said Dr. Céline Gounder, a CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, in an interview with "CBS Mornings Plus" following the FDA's announcement.

IIT Guwahati harnesses clay sedimentation to identify and measure Coronavirus
Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati researchers have developed a novel method for detecting and measuring the amount of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The innovative approach is based on how quickly a clay-virus-electrolyte mixture settles; a process commonly known as sedimentation, offering a simple and affordable alternative to the complex and expensive methods currently in use for virus detection. The findings of this research have been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal, Applied Clay Science, in a paper co-authored by Prof. T V Bharat, Department of Civil Engineering, and Prof. Sachin Kumar, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, along with research scholars Dr Himanshu Yadav and Deepa Mehta at IIT Guwahati . Posing a threat to human lives globally, COVID-19 pandemic revealed a critical gap in how viral infections are detected and tracked. Current methods, such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), are highly sensitive but time-consuming and require heavy equipment. Similarly, the antigen testing is fast but lacks accuracy, while antibody testing is used after the infection has occurred, highlighting limitations at various levels. Additionally, many of these methods are not practical in resource-limited settings or during large-scale outbreaks. To address these gaps, Prof. T V Bharat, Dept. of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, along with his research team has used Bentonite clay, a clay well known for its ability to absorb pollutants and heavy metals due to its unique chemical structure in collaboration with Prof. Sachin Kumar, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering. Previous studies have shown that clay particles can bind with viruses and bacteriophages, making it a promising material for virus detection. The research team focused on how Bentonite clay interacts with virus particles in a salt environment. The research team found that a Coronavirus surrogate and Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) bind to the negatively charged clay surfaces at a controlled room temperature and a neutral pH of 7. Speaking about the findings of the research, Prof. T V Bharat said, "Imagine a world where detecting viruses is as simple as watching sand settle in water. That is the breakthrough we have achieved! Our new method uses clay to quickly identify and measure viruses, like the coronavirus. By observing how the clay settles in a solution, we can determine if a virus is present and how much of it there is. This innovative approach offers a faster, more affordable, and accurate alternative to current methods, paving the way for better disease monitoring and treatment strategies, especially during pandemics, this study is in continuation with our recent studies published in prestigious journals like Langmuir in developing exclusive biomedical waste facilities for disposing pathogenic waste sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India." The research team validated their findings using established virus-detection methods, including plaque assay for a coronavirus surrogate and RT-PCR for IBV. The developed technique produced accurate results in comparison to the standard detection methods, reinforcing its reliability. Notably, the method can be extended to detect other viruses such as the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), which affects poultry and causes major losses in the farming industry. This development holds great promise for improving how viral outbreaks are monitored and controlled, especially in regions where expensive lab equipment and trained personnel are not readily available. With further refinement, the method could be adapted for use in field kits or simple laboratory setups, making virus detection more accessible and efficient in future public health emergencies. As the next step, the research team is planning to collaborate with industry partners with medical facilities for clinical trials for SARS-Cov-2 and other viruses. By partnering with industry, the research team hopes to leverage the resources and expertise necessary to conduct robust clinical trials and ultimately contribute to the global effort to combat viral infections.

Texas woman dies due to brain-eating bacteria after using tap water
A 71-year-old woman in Texas died from a deadly brain infection caused by a microscopic amoeba. The amoeba, which came from her tap water, reached her brain after she used the water for a nasal rinse. According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the woman used a nasal irrigation device filled with unboiled tap water, which led to the fatal infection. The CDC report stated that the woman had used water from her RV at a campground. The water was inadequately disinfected and contained Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba. The report noted that the otherwise healthy woman developed seizures and, despite receiving medical treatment, died eight days after the onset of symptoms. Laboratory testing at the CDC confirmed the presence of N. fowleri in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid. Highlighting the importance of water quality, the CDC report stated: 'This case highlights the potential for serious health risks associated with improper use of nasal irrigation devices, as well as the importance of maintaining RV water quality and ensuring that municipal water systems adhere to regulatory standards.' Know how to stay safe Following the incident, an epidemiologic investigation conducted by the Texas Department of State Health Services concluded that the patient had performed nasal irrigation four days before falling ill. Although the investigation could not determine the exact source of the amoeba—whether from the RV's potable water tank or the municipal water system—it confirmed that the route of exposure was tap water. During the investigation, the CDC collected 12 environmental samples, including the patient's irrigation device, water from the RV's water heater, and water from other sources in the RV. The CDC concluded that no N. fowleri DNA or viable amoebae were detected in any of the environmental samples collected from the campsite or RV water system, despite its confirmed presence in the patient. Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba - a type of one-celled organism - that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is nicknamed the "brain-eating amoeba" because it can infect the brain and destroy brain tissue. Though infections are rare, they are often fatal.
