Rapist energy healer who fled Australia jailed

Yahoo4 days ago

A "predatory" holistic energy healer who sexually assaulted two vulnerable women before fleeing Australia has been jailed.
Helio Taiyang Matahari, 63, who has been known by five other aliases, appeared in Brisbane District Court on Friday after being "dragged back" for sentencing.
Matahari pleaded guilty to rape and two counts of sexual assault, eight years after his offending began.
The court was told Matahari abused his relationship with a woman in December 2017 after being introduced to her via family, with her mother also seeing him for kinesiology treatment.
Matahari digitally raped the-then 20-year-old, taking advantage of a woman who went seeking his expertise, the court heard.
"She was already feeling quite uneasy … and you progressed with touching her under the guise of therapy," Judge Deborah Richards said.
The woman read out a devastating impact statement to the court with her father in support.
"I never in my life felt so small, so powerless, so utterly violated, as I did from the assault itself and the days that followed," she said.
"But the impacts aren't just consigned to what had happened on the day.
"It's about the seven years that have followed since, seven long years of waiting, hoping and having to constantly re-live the assault without the ability to finally let it go."
A second woman made sexual assault allegations against Matahari in 2018.
He pleaded guilty before it went to trial to both the rape and sexual assault charges in April 2021.
But Matahari then changed his plea and fled Australia to Thailand in December 2021.
He was eventually deported back to Australia, extradited from NSW to Brisbane in 2024.
Matahari was charged with breach of bail and arraigned on that charge on Friday.
"You had to be dragged back," Judge Richards said.
Matahari's behaviour was "predatory and opportunistic sexual offending committed against two vulnerable women which continued undeterred", the crown prosecutor said.
Matahari's defence detailed his extensive work history across multiple fields and provided character references citing his integrity.
"You don't have integrity when you run away from your charges and leave victims hanging while you're basically hiding from the law," Judge Richards said.
"It's extraordinary people would speak of him in these terms if they knew what he'd done."
Matahari was sentenced to five years in jail and will be eligible for parole in September 2026.

'Put your name to it': Broncos legend calls for 'lying' figure to come forward publicly

Agenda-driven lies concocted by the media. That's former Brisbane star Corey Parker's take on claims the listless Broncos are being over-trained and worn down by coach Michael Maguire's unrelenting approach. It comes after former Penrith international Greg Alexander accused the NRL glamour team of giving up against Manly last round, labelling players "wusses" if they had a problem with Maguire's intense methods. "When someone says, "I'm hearing whispers…', that's just code for 'I'm making a story up'," Parker said on SEN radio. "I haven't heard it and I've dug deep into the Broncos in regard to some of these rumours. The whole 'training is too hard' line is ridiculous. Anyone who comes out and says training has been too hard, go and speak to the Penrith Panthers or the Melbourne Storm over the last two decades. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, right?" Parker suggested the source of the rumours would soon be disclosed in a bid to end the unrest at Brisbane. "Put your name to it," he challenged those behind the whispers. "And standby because I reckon there's going to be a fair bit come out in the next week over some of the agenda-driven things that pop out in the media." Alexander was stunned to hear dissension over Maguire's training methods could be the reason behind the Broncos' poor form, calling Brisbane players out for their pathetic performance against the Sea Eagles. "I don't think I have said it about a team this year – they have turned it up," he said. "Brisbane has got some problems (but) please don't tell me the Brisbane players are whingeing because Michael Maguire is too hard on them. Cry me a river you little wusses. If that is true, none of them deserve to be playing in the NRL. Tell me that is not true." "Cry me a river!"Brandy goes nuclear on the Broncos after their string of bad performances! Can they turn it around?#NRL — SEN League (@SENLeague) June 2, 2025 RELATED: Payne Haas could link with brother as manager makes call on future NRL fans left saddened over news about Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah The Broncos have lost six of their last seven matches, freefalling to 11th on the ladder after a strong start to the season. Maguire, in his first year at the club, is under immense pressure to turn things around, starting with Saturday's local derby against Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium. It's the first of three consecutive home matches that are set to make or break the Broncos' season. Energetic fullback Reece Walsh is expected to return from injury against the Titans as he pushes for inclusion in Queensland's squad for Origin 2, while veteran halfback Adam Reynolds will run out for his 300th NRL game.

Australia Cracks Down on Crypto ATMs as Scams, Fraud Uncovered

Australia's financial crimes agency placed curbs on cryptocurrency automatic teller machines as the surging number of kiosks increasingly attract fraudsters and scammers. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, known as Austrac, placed a A$5,000 ($3,250) limit on cash deposits and withdrawals as part of new measures to safeguard consumers, according to a statement Tuesday. It's also refused to renew the registration of one crypto ATM provider.

Baltimore schools sued by former students alleging the system protected a predatory teacher

BALTIMORE — Three women are suing Baltimore's public school system, alleging they were sexually abused by a special education teacher decades ago while administrators failed to protect students from his predatory behavior. One of the plaintiffs was 14 when she alleges the teacher, whom the lawsuit names as Alvin Hunt, raped and impregnated her, according to the complaint.
