Search and rescue software 20+ years in the making
Ettrick man Bart Kindt does not get out in the backblocks and bush but his expertise is giving search and rescue operations a real boost.
Mr Kindt has developed the SARTrack incident management software - a system he has been working on for more than 20 years.
The work he has done with the software led to him winning a certificate of achievement at the NZ Search and Rescue Awards this week.
The software takes a lot of the guesswork and mistakes out of a search and rescue operation.
The system is management software which helps run a search and rescue operation. The software can also be run off the internet, which means it can be used in isolated areas which do not have good internet access.
When contacted yesterday, Mr Kindt said he was able to talk about the missing tramper operation at Milford Sound. It was being run off the internet as it was in such an isolated area.
He could see all the maps being used for the search from his Ettrick home.
Mr Kindt (67), a native of the Netherlands who came to New Zealand in 1989, said the system meant co-ordination between the base and those out in the field during SAR operations could be much simpler.
''What used to happen is you would not know where everyone is. Everything was done on paper. The radio operator will be away from the base. You will get people running around with pieces of paper to take to the base. No-one would know where anyone else had been.
''You could be walking 50m away from a dead body and not know it.''
Now with the new software, the information could all be collated into one system. This gave the staff overseeing the operation the ability to work out easily exactly where searchers had gone and how far away they were and radio messages were worked quickly into the system.
The development of the software had come about from him talking to those who worked on SAR operations and knew what was needed.
''This is written bottom up, which makes a big difference. So many thing are developed by people who oversee things but do not work in the field. And in the end the things they create don't work.''
It was a Windows-based system which needed a local database server.
Operators in New Zealand and around the world had been using the system.
Mr Kindt said he did not go out in the bush himself but took radio communications and other equipment to SAR operations.
He also worked with Amateur Radio Emergency Communication groups across the country, which were also involved in rescues and missing-person searches.
Mr Kindt was helped bring the internet to the country and develop it in the South Island. That involved him spending some time in Central Otago, which he took a liking to.
He wanted somewhere quiet, discovered Ettrick and stayed there.

Aiden Technologies now available in Azure Marketplace via MACC
Aiden Technologies is now available as a fully transactable solution within the Microsoft Azure Marketplace and can be acquired through the Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) programme. This development enables organisations using Microsoft Azure to purchase Aiden's Windows endpoint management platform with their existing MACC funds, removing the need for additional budget approvals and accelerating procurement. Procurement streamlined The inclusion of Aiden in the Azure Marketplace and its eligibility for MACC aims to address a significant challenge faced by enterprise IT teams - procurement delays caused by complex budget cycles and approval processes. By transacting through existing Azure agreements, organisations can implement Aiden without having to wait for internal budget cycles or undergo additional vendor onboarding processes. "Getting started with Aiden just got even easier," said Joshua Aaron, CEO of Aiden Technologies. "By becoming MACC-eligible in the Azure Marketplace, we're removing procurement roadblocks and helping IT teams take immediate action to improve endpoint management - without waiting on budget cycles or approval chains." Under the MACC programme, enterprise customers commit to a specific budget for Azure services and approved third-party tools. This budget, often allocated at the start of a fiscal period and subject to 'use it or lose it' rules, can now be used to deploy Aiden directly. Many organisations face challenges in spending all their MACC funds before expiration, sometimes resulting in wasted budget. The ability to acquire Aiden through the Azure Marketplace provides an immediate use for these funds, supporting IT operations and enhancing endpoint security. Features of the Aiden platform Aiden Technologies describes its platform as an 'Intelligent Automation' solution for Windows environments, positioned as a managed service from initial provisioning to ongoing patch management, security, and compliance. The solution integrates with deployment tools such as ConfigMgr and Intune and includes several key features designed to automate and simplify endpoint management. The Full-ProvisioningTM feature extends Microsoft Autopilot by automating the deployment of the operating system, applications, policies, tools, and security agents before a user ever logs in. According to the company, this process ensures that each machine is fully configured and validated before first use, eliminating delays and the need for support tickets at login. The Continue Before Logon (CBL) function enables updates to critical software without requiring user interruption. Updates are staged and installed in the background during any reboot, without the need for forced closures, user prompts, or custom scripts. This approach is intended to keep systems secure, reduce non-compliance due to always-on applications, and minimise disruption to workflow. The Aiden platform also provides automated application deployment, maintaining a dynamic catalogue of both commercial and custom software packages. IT teams can define specific requirements for different user or device types, and Aiden manages the delivery, maintenance, and patching processes automatically. Patch management and vulnerability remediation are carried out continuously, removing the need for scheduled patch windows and improving security posture. Aiden also includes drift control and configuration enforcement, where devices are monitored and reset to a prescribed state if deviations occur. For compliance and operational transparency, the solution offers AidenVision, which supplies real-time insights into patching status, software deployment health, and policy compliance, aimed at reducing reliance on manual tracking or ticketing systems. Impact for enterprise IT The availability of Aiden via the Azure Marketplace and MACC is presented as a way to bypass traditional procurement hurdles for enterprise IT teams by allowing solutions to be purchased with existing cloud commitments. This method aims to deliver benefits such as improved endpoint security, reduction in manual operational work, and greater speed in adopting new IT tools. The announcement also notes that Aiden offers its full suite of services – from OS and application deployment to patching and compliance, as well as features to maintain configuration consistency and reduce risks associated with endpoint drift and unpatched software. Organisations using Microsoft Azure can now choose to direct their existing committed spend towards Aiden Technologies' endpoint management and automation platform, integrating it within their IT operations with the aim of reducing procurement time and improving operational outcomes.

Evergreen acquires REDD, celebrates $1 billion revenue milestone
Evergreen has reached its 100th managed IT services provider acquisition milestone with the addition of REDD, an Australia-based business, to its Lyra Technology Group portfolio. REDD, headquartered in Brisbane, will continue to operate independently as part of Lyra Technology Group, Evergreen's collection of managed IT services providers. The company was established in 2016 by Nigel Heyn, and under the leadership of Heyn and Chief Executive Officer Brad Ferris, REDD has grown through a focus on technical expertise and business management. Brad Ferris will remain CEO, and the business will retain its existing operations, following the model Evergreen applies in its portfolio which prioritises decentralisation. Global expansion Evergreen currently operates in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The company is exploring expansion into Ireland as well as the Nordic and Benelux regions. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed by either party. Craig Fulton, M&A Advisor at Evergreen, commented: "Nigel and Brad's leadership and values align closely with Evergreen's long-term vision. In becoming part of the Evergreen network, REDD is positioning itself for continued success while contributing valuable insights to peers across the portfolio." Ferris provided his perspective on the development, saying, "REDD has always been built on a commitment to exceptional service, strong relationships, and a culture that puts people first. That doesn't change. What excites us about joining Evergreen and Lyra is the opportunity to stay true to who we are while being bolstered by a global network of like-minded businesses. This partnership enhances our ability to deliver for our clients, share best practices, and tap into a deep pool of expertise — all while preserving the team, culture, and values that make REDD unique." Financial milestone and recognition Evergreen has also been recognised as the first Pax8 partner to generate over $1 billion in IT services revenue. In addition, last month Evergreen Vice President Sydney Hockett was named to CRN's Women of the Channel list. The company recently hosted its first Evergreen Elevate event, designed as a free opportunity for managed service providers to obtain strategic insights relating to exit strategies. Ramsey Sahyoun, Co-Founder and M&A Partner at Evergreen, said, "When we started this company seven years ago, we hoped to replicate the Berkshire Hathaway model and build the best home for MSPs. I'm proud that we've stayed committed to that vision, to our decentralized operating model, and to our permanent hold strategy. It's been a rewarding journey, and we are grateful for the MSP business owners that have trusted us with their companies." Stakeholder and partner perspectives Lloyd Wolf, Founder and former CEO of Wolf Consulting, which was the first managed IT services provider acquired by Evergreen in December 2017, commented on his experience: "Selling the ownership of my business was one of the biggest decisions of my life. I first met Jeff Totten, CEO of Evergreen, in the fall of 2017. He shared with me his vision of building the best home for businesses and their leaders, retaining our employees and taking care of them, and investing in continued future growth – all while operating in a decentralized model that would allow the business to maintain its culture and independence. This approach and model were very different from any other buyer I had met. I was excited that I had found the permanent home for my business and employees. Since then, Evergreen and Lyra Technology Group have truly executed the vision Jeff originally shared with me. From Wolf Consulting to REDD, I couldn't be more proud of Evergreen's and Lyra's growth and success." Lane Brannan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Americas, at Pax8, also congratulated the business: "It's been impressive to witness the growth and revenue milestones Evergreen and Lyra have achieved over the last few years. While obtaining a billion dollars of revenue is an impressive achievement alone, it also signals the critical role and impact MSPs have in driving technology adoption within the SMB market. We look forward to fueling our strong partnership with Lyra and congratulate them on this significant milestone." Evergreen continues to emphasise its practice of a permanent hold strategy and a decentralised operating model in the managed IT services sector, as it further expands its international presence and portfolio.
