India's JioStar Execs Outline Vision for Youth-Focused Content at APOS
Indian media giant JioStar is positioning itself as a collaborator rather than gatekeeper in India's evolving content ecosystem, with executives outlining an ambitious vision for culturally rooted storytelling that serves the country's massive youth demographic.
Speaking at the APOS conference in Indonesia, JioStar content chiefs Alok Jain and Krishnan Kutty detailed plans to dramatically scale programming for Gen Z audiences, particularly in South India, where they intend to increase volume by 7 to 10 times current levels.

'In a country as creatively diverse as India, it's no longer about scaling content, it's about resetting the creative ecosystem,' Jain said during a fireside session titled 'Inside the Next Wave of Indian Storytelling.' 'At JioStar, we're committed to ensuring creators are not boxed in by platforms, formats, or legacy structures.'
The exec emphasized the company's role as facilitator rather than traditional broadcaster. 'Our role is not to act as gatekeepers, but as collaborators,' he said. 'We're building mechanisms that empower creators to move fluidly across mediums, with opportunities that evolve with their voice.'
Kutty, meanwhile, redefined what constitutes bold storytelling in the current landscape. 'What was considered bold five or six years ago is not what's considered bold now,' he explained. 'Back then, it was about scale and visual spectacle. Today, boldness is about pushing societal norms, asking deeper questions, and doing it within the Indian context.'
The executive stressed the importance of cultural authenticity: 'We're not in California; we're in India and we need to be rooted in our cultural values. Our job is to push boundaries, but also to carry our audience with us.'
JioStar's approach comes as India's entertainment industry grapples with evolving audience demands and economic pressures. Jain pointed to the success of 'Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar,' a 19-episode series with 50-minute episodes featuring debut talent that became a hit from launch, as proof that audiences will embrace innovation.
'The Indian consumer is constantly evolving. It's a young country,' Jain noted. 'People are exposed to new things, and they're demanding and unforgiving. If the story isn't great, they won't watch, regardless of who stars in it.'
The focus on youth programming reflects broader industry recognition that traditional broadcasters have underserved Gen Z audiences. 'While MTV and the youth cluster are doing some outstanding work, broadcasters and streamers have not programmed enough for Gen Z,' Kutty said.
Kutty highlighted India's unique multilingual advantage, noting that 80% of Malayalam-language content consumption on JioHotstar occurs outside Kerala. 'The diversity of India is a gift from a content creator perspective – every state, every region is a source of different perspectives which provides a wealth of stories,' he said.
However, both executives acknowledged current economic challenges in the streaming sector. Kutty described what he sees as 'a broken economic model' where 'we've escalated prices to a point where producers have become B2B entities, creating primarily for the platform, not the end consumer.'
The company operates with significant scale, reaching over 750 million weekly viewers across 80-plus television channels and streaming platform JioHotstar. Jain noted that 800 million viewers watch the JioStar network while 400 million stream on JioHotstar, with approximately 320,000 hours of content across multiple languages.
'With a billion young people, 22 languages, and a thriving economy across sectors, India is unmatched in scale and diversity,' Jain said. 'What makes India exciting is not just its size, it's the scale, youth, diversity, and openness to change, making it a strategic market.'
The executives emphasized that sustainable growth requires profitable content creation, with youth programming representing a key component of that strategy. As Jain put it: 'If the industry is to run in a sustainable manner, we must drive content profitably – and focusing on youth is a big part of that.'

Salsa Z is teaching young Miamians how to salsa
Standing on a stage in front of about 270 people — each looking to her for guidance — Elisa Baena demonstrated the basic step pattern of a salsa dance. "1, 2, 3 — relax your shoulders — 5, 6, 7 — smile on your faces," she said, with her back to the audience so they could mirror her feet. "I want your hips fluid. … Just watch me." Why it matters: Each month, Baena leads a similar class, part of Salsa Z —the club and community she started at the year's onset. The name riffs on the Gen Z generation, because the group aims to teach young Miamians — specifically Gen Zers — how to learn salsa in a welcoming, fun and "non-viejuco" or "old" environment. It's for the "kids who grew up with salsa in our living rooms but were never taught," she wrote on social media. Between the lines: While the group targets young folks, everyone is welcome — from people who've never before stepped to a beat of salsa, to experienced dancers looking to make friends and enjoy a night out. Each culture has its own way to dance salsa. Salsa Z, though, is Cuban. State of salsa: Baena, a Miami native with Cuban roots, grew up a dancer, studying at the Miami City Ballet School and later dancing at the University of Miami while in college. But it was during the pandemic that she decided to formally learn salsa dance as a way to get out of the house and meet people. There was just one issue: All of her classmates were old — "like old, old," she told Axios. "The only way to get better was to go to salsa socials and clubs, but it was the same scene. It was all viejos [older people]," she said. "It wasn't the vibe, and it wasn't the way I wanted to spend a Friday or Saturday night." Yes, but: Bad Bunny released an album, " Debí Tirar Más Fotos," on Jan. 5 featuring two salsa songs. "This is my time," she said she thought. She hosted the first Salsa Z event in February at ZeyZey. To her surprise, about 120 people showed up. How it works: The monthly ticketed event has changed — and grown — since launching. Ahead of last week's event, Baena announced a new structure: The first block is now the beginners and basics class for first-timers, those who've never taken a salsa class or for those wanting to review the basics. The second block is for the club's regulars, where new moves are introduced. On Saturday, after the session, attendees were encouraged to move inside to the disco to keep dancing to a live percussionist and vinyl set playing salsa music. The bottom line: Baena didn't expect the club to grow this much, or this quickly; it simply started as a fun idea.

Does Player 456 survive in Squid Game? Season 3 ending explained
Squid Game season 3 is here and that means it is time for viewers to finally find out whether Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will succeed in destroying the games once and for all in the Netflix character, who has entered the deadly competition once more as player 456, has been fighting to survive so that he can tear it down from the inside. However, following the events of season 2 which saw him lose his childhood friend after a failed coup the character is at a loss, believing he is responsible for the death of his pal and so many others. Season 3 tests his faith in humanity even more, as the games continue and he is forced to reckon with his own failings as well as the selfishness of those around him. When he is tasked with helping protect Player 222's baby he has purpose again, but where will that new path take him? And will he succeed in destroying the games for good? Here is everything that you need to know. In Season 3 the last surviving players must go through the final game of the show, the titular Squid Game, which this time is being played on top of three towers. In the game, the players must kill at least one of their competitors by getting them off the tower within 15 minutes to pass. They can kill more than one person if they wish, so long as one player is eliminated in each round. There are eight players in total left, including Gi-hun, Jun-hee's newborn baby who has been made the new Player 222, and the child's father Myung-gi. Myung-gi teams up with the other five players who are ostensibly in agreement over who should be killed: Gi-hyun, Jun-hee's baby and Min-su (Lee David). The latter of which is currently in the midst of a mental breakdown because of his experiences during the games and the drugs he has taken that were hidden in pop star Thanos' pendant necklace. Gi-hun promised Jun-hee that he would protect her baby before she died, and he is steadfast in wanting to keep that oath. However the other players are equally as determined to convince him to give up the baby and let her die. Myung-gi appears to be siding against Gi-hun and his own child for a while, but it is soon revealed he has no intention of siding with the others and he helps pick them all off. The only problem is that he reveals this too early, and the other five players all die during the second stage of the three-part game. This means that either Gi-hun, Myung-gi or Jun-hee's baby must die in the final round for one or two of them to win the games, or they all die. The finale sees Myung-gi try and win the games by forcing Gi-hun to give him the baby and not make it across to the next round, meaning that Myung-gi plans to kill his own child in order to win the games. He threatens Gi-hun, who allows Myung-gi to think he's won by giving him the baby but in the last minute runs across and makes it to the other side with a knife. Myung-gi and Gi-hun scrap, Gi-hun with a knife and Myung-gi with a pole, and ultimately both end up dangling over the edge of the tower. Myung-gi ultimately falls to his death — the only problem is that neither of them pressed the button to start the game before they began fighting. Gi-hun presses the button but rather than kill the baby like he is expected to by the VIPs he sacrifices himself so that Jun-hee's baby can live, and she is declared the winner of the games. With Gi-hun dead, the Frontman aka In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) starts the evacuation order of the island and begins preparing to end the games for that year, but his brother Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun) and rogue Pink Guard No-eul (Park Gyu-young) are ready to stop them. As Frontman takes Jun-hee's baby Jun-ho confronts him, but ultimately can't kill him, giving him room to escape. The island is destroyed and the police unable to catch the perpetrators, while No-eul sneaks into the boat leaving the island with the other staff members. The story jumps to six months later, No-eul visits with the player she helped escape while Jun-ho is revealed to have left the police. He returns home one day to find Jun-hee's baby in his home, with a bank card that contains all of her winnings. In-ho visits Gi-hun's family in America and gives them his belongings, advising them that he has died. The box contains his Player 456 hoodie and a bank card that contains his winnings from the first game. It is revealed that the games are continuing, and in America contestants are being sourced as Cate Blanchett makes a cameo as the US equivalent of the Ddakji Man. Lee and his co-stars Lee Byung-hun and Park Gyu-young spoke at a press conference in London about the film's ending. The show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had shared his reservations about the ending he'd come up with, but the cast were effusive in their praise of how the director closed out the series. "I thought that director Huang's decision that he had made... he was very determined," Lee Jung-jae said. "I'm sure that he went through a lot of internal debate and struggles because, as we all know, this series has been just hugely successful. So when it's a story that big, how do you bring that to a close as director, writer and creator? And especially for a character like Gi-hun, where do you take him? "And so I know that he listened to a lot of other people's ideas as well, we would have discussions among ourselves, among the cast. He would also discuss it with me and the crew as well, but I believe that director Hwang came up with the most adequate, the most unpredictable, the most meaningful and the most intriguing and entertaining ending possible. "So personally, I am very happy with the finale and you all are going to be able to see where it all ends soon. But I can guarantee you it's not going to be what you think." Lee Byung-hun, on the other hand, implied that while the finale gives the series a satisfying conclusion he feels there's room for more if the audience craves it: "Director Hwang keeps saying it's a finale. When I first read it I felt it could be a finale but, at the same time, it could be a new start. "I'm not sure [if it definitely is], that's my personal opinion, but if the audience's love and support increase you never know what might happen!" Park added that she looked at the series as a fan, having come into it later than her co-stars, and so that gives her a different and interesting angle: "If I answer it's as a fan, as one of the audience. So if season 2 was the explanation of the expanded universe of Squid Game, in Season 3 all those questions will be answered really clearly. Squid Game season 3 is out now on Netflix.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Renowned food critic, columnist, and film producer Chua Lam, celebrated as one of the 'Four Talents of Hong Kong,' passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83, according to the South China Morning Post. Per his wishes, no ceremony was held, and his body was cremated to avoid inconveniencing loved ones. Among his notable film productions were Jackie Chan's Wheels on Meals, Armour of God, and Mr Nice Guy. Chua was a celebrated figure in food journalism, known for his discerning palate and dedication to uncovering the finest culinary experiences. He authored numerous travel journals and food critiques and hosted acclaimed shows such as Celebrity Talk Show, which featured Hong Kong's biggest stars of the era, including Leslie Cheung and Maggie Cheung. SCMP in its report said that in addition to his columns and books, Chua organised culinary tours across Asia and the world, sampling multiple dishes daily to identify and recommend the best local specialities. His influence extended to consulting on popular food documentaries such as A Bite of China and Once Upon a Bite. Despite personal challenges, including a severe hip injury and the loss of his wife in recent years, Chua continued to inspire through his reflections on life and food. His final memoir, Lived, released earlier this year, shared his vibrant experiences, resilience, and deep appreciation for gastronomy. According to the report, Chua's contributions earned him a place among the 'Four Talents of Hong Kong,' alongside literary and cultural giants Jin Yong, Ni Kuang, and James Wong. His legacy continues to shape the city's cultural and culinary heritage, marking the end of an era in Hong Kong's entertainment and food scene.
