Where is crime happening? New map shows recent crimes in Salt Lake neighborhoods
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — In an effort to increase transparency, the Salt Lake City Police Department created an interactive map showing recent crimes across the city.
The new Crime Map was announced Friday, April 11, with crime location data ranging back six months. The tool depicts crimes as orange and blue dots, with orange representing violent crime and blue indicative of property crime.
Authorities said the map will give Salt Lake City residents 'greater access to crime data in their neighborhoods,' adding that tracking trends can help them understand 'neighborhood-specific issues.'
'Providing accessible information on our website, allows our community to make informed decisions about safety,' said Lindsay Larsen, SLCPD director of data science and research. 'Our goal is to share more data with the public in the coming year.'
While the department said the public should have access to this data, they chose to include intersections rather than exact addresses to protect the privacy of victims and others involved in the incidents.

The map can be filtered by the type of crime, community council boundaries, and date range. The crime filters range from theft and robbery to assault, homicide, and sexual assault. Officials say the map will be updated on the fourth day of every month, according to the press release.
If accessing the map, keep in mind that one incident could appear as multiple if there were several charges involved. If the exact location of a crime is unknown, the location where it was reported might be used instead.
The department said it encourages residents to use the map to help them engage in 'informed efforts to keep Salt Lake City safe.' SLCPD Chief Brian Redd also said it provides an opportunity to build trust through greater transparency.
'By offering an easy-to-use crime map, we're helping our community members stay informed and engaged. This is about building stronger partnerships between our residents, business community, and police,' Redd said.

Lori Vallow Daybell back in court, charged with conspiracy to murder ex nephew-in-law
PHOENIX, Arizona (ABC4) — Lori Vallow Daybell is back in court, charged with conspiring to commit the attempted murder of her former nephew-in-law, Brandon Boudreaux. Daybell is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of her niece, Melani. Boudreaux alleges he was shot at while returning home on Oct. 2, 2019. Daybell is representing herself in the trial, as she did in her Arizona trial on conspiring to murder her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, where she was found guilty. Daybell was also previously sentenced for murder and conspiracy to murder her children, Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ashlyn Ryan, 16. She was sentenced to prison and is currently serving five life sentences for the crimes. Lori Vallow Daybell given 5 life sentences in prison for murder of her two children In the final chapter of the Lori Vallow Daybell trials, prosecutors are accusing Daybell of conspiring with her late brother, Alex Cox, to kill Boudreaux outside of his Gilbert home back in 2019. He gave emotional testimony of the events that took place that day, where he was reportedly shot at, but not hit. 'This defendant, Lori Vallow Daybell, has been charged with conspiracy to commit the first-degree murder of Brandon Boudreaux on October 2nd of 2019. The evidence in this case will prove to you beyond reasonable doubt that this defendant conspired with Alex Cox and others to kill Brandon,' said Prosecutor Treena Kay. Boudreaux said he went to the gym, then came home, and as he was waiting for his garage door to open, he noticed a Jeep with Texas plates on the side of the road that was parked awkwardly. He said the car moved in, the back window of the Jeep opened, and he saw the muzzle of a gun. At this point, he heard a bang and the window of his Tesla shattered. He immediately started driving, thinking someone had shot at him. Boudreaux then called 911 as he drove to the neighborhood pool. Police arrived and he talked with officers, realizing that someone had tried to kill him. Lori Vallow Daybell found guilty of conspiracy to murder husband Boudreaux also asserted before the jury that Daybell played a part in his divorce, claiming she influenced his ex-wife, Melani Pawlowski. The second day of Daybell's trial in Arizona was held on Friday, as witnesses and evidence were presented before the jury. Daybell was asked to leave the room after an argument with the judge, in which she had raised her voice in discussing whether her 'good character' could later be presented before the court. As the day progresses, evidence and witness testimony continue to be presented before the jury, including forensic evidence relating to the gunshot residue, provided by the detective involved in the case. Pride Festival: Here are the street closures happening in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Several road closures are set for downtown Salt Lake City this weekend while Pride Festival takes place, according to Salt Lake City Police. The Utah Pride Festival begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, and will end at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. The event will reportedly be held in and around Washington Square. Several roads near the City and County Building will be fully closed or will have reduced traffic lanes, including 200 East between 400 South and 500 South, which is currently closed as crews set up, according to SLCPD. Thousands of people are expected to attend the festival over the two-day event this weekend. Drivers are asked to take additional precautions — including the use of carpooling, public transportation, or a rideshare service to avoid congestion. While there are a number of Pride events happening, the Utah Pride Parade takes place on Sunday, June 8. The parade is Utah's biggest LGBTQIA+ event, hosting nearly 150,000 spectators and participants annually — free of charge and open to everyone. SLCPD will also be on high alert to ensure that the parade is a peaceful event.
