Joe Pantoliano's mental health crisis nearly destroyed his marriage

Perth Now28-07-2025
The Sopranos star Joe Pantoliano has revealed his mental health crisis almost destroyed his marriage.
The 73-year-old actor - who played Ralph 'Ralphie' Cifaretto in the hit mobster drama - has confessed he was "a mess for a long time" and he made matters worse by self-medicating with alcohol which left his marriage to Nancy Sheppard on the brink of collapse.
He told New York Post column PageSix: "[I used] alcohol, what was available, women, you know, risky behaviour, act first and then ask questions second ...
"[I was] a mess for a long time ... My wife and my kids were ready to throw me out. The only people who were happy to see me weren't people. They were my dogs."
Joe went on to insist he believes his pets helped save him. He explained: '[The dogs] saved my life because it was the only spark that was left in me. I was like Tinkerbell and the light was dying."
The actor was eventually diagnosed with clinical depression in 2007 and managed to get his life back on track. He has since written two books on mental health and founded a charity called No Kidding, Me Too! to help eliminate the stigma surrounding such issues,
Joe recently declared he's been feeling "really uncomfortable" at home in the US since President Donald Trump took office for a second term last year.
He had previously revealed he's no fan of the reality TV star-turned-politician and accused him of glorifying the mobster characters in The Sopranos to justify bad behaviour,
Joe told The Independent newspaper: "What always upset me was that the majority of the audience didn't get the genius of [The Sopranos creator] David Chase, and what David Chase was saying about these monsters.
"[Mobster character] Tony Soprano becomes a hero, when he's a broken-down gangster and a murderer. Scumbags like Trump and Roger Stone, all these white-collar criminals, continue to be quoted as using The Godfather and The Sopranos as a blueprint for being douchebags! I mean, how f***** up is that?"

Shanna Moakler to judge Playboy's new Playmate of the Month competition

Playboy is relaunching its Playmate of the Month competition, with Shanna Moakler among the judges. The men's magazine – which was founded in 1953 by Hugh Hefner – is continuing its comeback with a new Playmate competition and TV show, months after returning to print with an annual February issue. Page Six reports that The Great Playmate Search will be an online competition with an initial round of public voting, followed by a final round with a judging panel made up of former Playboy models. Moakler, Summer Altice, Brandee Roderick, Daphnee Duplaix, and 2025 Playmate of the Year Gillian Nation are all set to join the panel. A behind-the-scenes TV series has also been pitched to networks. Playboy previously had TV success with the reality series The Girls Next Door, which aired from 2005 to 2010, although the new series has been compared to Netflix' Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Stars including Marilyn Monroe, Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan, Sharon Stone, Carmen Electra, Anna Nicole Smith, Farrah Fawcett, and Jenny McCarthy have previously graced the covers of Playboy magazine. Hefner passed away in 2017 at the age of 91 and the magazine stopped printing in 2020, before returning in 2025 with its first annual issue. Last year, the board rejected a $100 million bid from Hefner's son, Cooper, to buy the company.

New York Post sister newspaper to launch in California

"Headless body in topless bar"-type headlines made famous by the iconic New York Post tabloid could soon greet Californians as Rupert Murdoch's News Corp prepares to expand to the West Coast with its biggest US daily newspaper launch in nearly 15 years. The California Post, to be headquartered in Los Angeles and is set to launch in early 2026, said Sean Giancola, CEO and publisher of the New York Post Media Group, which will include the new publication. California news industry experts say the tabloid would seek to capitalise on the struggles of the incumbent Los Angeles Times, which has shed subscribers and staff. The California Post will offer a familiar mix of what it calls "common-sense journalism," celebrity and entertainment news and sports reporting across multiple platforms, including mobile and desktop, audio, social media and print," Giancola said in an interview. "We already reach three million people in the L.A.(market) and over seven million in California, so there is a base of audience there that already engages in our brand." Murdoch, the company's chairman emeritus, recognised California as a market opportunity and gave the venture his blessing, said one source with knowledge of the matter. "You don't launch a newspaper without getting feedback from one of the best guys in the business," the source said. The last daily newspaper launched in the US by News Corp, owner of the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal, was the Daily, a digital newspaper for Apple's then-new iPad tablet, in 2011. It folded the following year. A Los Angeles Times spokesperson did not respond immediately to a request for comment on the California Post.

Billy Joel is 'shy' and 'deeply introverted'

Billy Joel is actually very "shy" and "deeply introverted", according to his daughter Alexa Ray Joel. The singer/songwriter has opened up about her famous father and insisted he's very different to his outgoing stage persona and "never buys [into] his own hype". Alexa told New York Post column PageSix: "You know my father is really funny because he's he's like the most self-effacing person on the planet right? "He never buys [into] his own hype. "I'm like: 'You should be so proud of yourself!' He's like: 'Eh.' He's just not a typical, like narcissistic guy in the spotlight - he just does not buy into any of it -he's a true artist. He so deeply introverted, he's really actually a shy person." Alexa went on to insist Billy is now "bored" of the hype around his new HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which details his rise to fame and the highs and lows of his music career. She added: "He's like, well you know I'm kind of bored by it because it's a lot about me and I get sick of me ... "He's so introspective, you know, so I think it'll hit him later. I think maybe in a few months from now [he'll] watch it and be like: 'Oh that's cool'." The two-part documentary has won a slew of positive reviews since its release last month, and co-director Susan Lacy recently revealed she managed to get the famously private star to open up by explaining it wasn't a "drive-by portrait" project. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "He actually said to me: 'It's not my film, it's yours. The only thing I ask is tell the truth. Just tell the truth.' "And he came to the table with that, and I did about 10 very long interviews with him, and he delivered. "I don't know that he was actually really ready at the beginning to tell his story, but he came to realize that we were making a very deep film, a very serious film, the one that was really going to explore his music and how it connected with his life ... "It wasn't a fly-by-night, drive-by portrait, as many people do. He recognised that this was serious ... "
