Louis Rees-Zammit signs for Bristol Bears as he makes return to rugby

Louis Rees-Zammit has signed to play for the Bristol Bears as he makes a return to rugby. In January 2024, the 24-year-old announced he was leaving rugby to pursue a career in American Football. However, at the start of August 2025, he said he would return to the UK and to rugby. During his time in American Football, the winger had spells with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, although he never played in a regular-season game. Rees-Zammit said, 'Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me. The style of rugby the team play – all about entertaining the fans and growing the game – perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field. 'I'm looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears.' Director of Rugby at Bristol Bears, Pat Lam, said, 'Louis is a world-class player, and we're thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season. 'Although we have a small squad, we've been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the PREM and in Europe." Announcing his return to rugby earlier this month, Rees-Zammit wrote, "I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby. It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. "I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. The club confirmed that he would join the side with immediate effect. He will still be eligible to play for the Welsh national side, where he has already earned 32 caps.

Louis Rees-Zammit signs for Bristol Bears and makes clear statement

Louis Rees-Zammit signs for Bristol Bears and makes clear statement The 24-year-old is back in English rugby after announcing his return to the sport last month Rees-Zammit's move to Bristol Bears has been confirmed (Image: Rogan/Bristol Bears) Bristol Bears have confirmed the signing of Louis Rees-Zammit, with the Wales international wing completing his much-anticipated return to rugby from American football. ‌ The 24-year-old announced at the end of July that he would be returning to the sport where he made his name, having spent the last 18 months trying to achieve his dream of making it in the NFL. While he had spells with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars, however, it didn't work out for the former Gloucester star in the United States, leading him to decide to come back to rugby. ‌ Rees-Zammit is understood to also be a target for the rebel R360 league, but he has spent recent weeks looking for a contract for the upcoming season, with the proposed breakaway league - which is driven by former England World Cup winner Mike Tindall - not yet guaranteed to get off the ground. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby ‌ Clubs in England and France were interested in securing the services of the 32-cap international, with Cardiff emerging as surprise contenders to sign him before Red Bull-backed Newcastle ruled themselves out of the running earlier this week. However, Rees-Zammit's new club has now been confirmed, with Bristol Bears announcing the marquee signing on Thursday, the same day that he flew back to the UK after spending time in Florida with his family. He is now set to make his first appearance in competitive rugby since January last year when the new Gallagher Prem season gets under way next month. Article continues below As his signing was confirmed, Rees-Zammit said: "Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me. The style of rugby the team play - all about entertaining the fans and growing the game - perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field. 'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in the love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. "I'm looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears." ‌ Bristol's director of rugby, Pat Lam, added: "Louis is a world-class player, and we're thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season. "Although we have a small squad, we've been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the PREM and in Europe. "Louis offers exactly that to our dynamic back three, with his ability and desire to play both full back and wing for the Bears.. He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club. ‌ 'At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is," Lam continued. "The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow." Now that his club future has been decided, the Welshman is now expected to work towards a return to Test rugby, with Wales enduring a downturn in form since he won his last cap at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. New Wales coach Steve Tandy has already opened the door for Rees-Zammit to return to the fold, as he told reporters last week: 'I think you wouldn't rule anything out. Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back. Article continues below 'I think it's great for the game. He's gone away to experience something new, which is class, and I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition. "The more players we have available to represent our country the better. That's exciting and makes our job easier. Tandy added: "It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging in terms of selection as we've already got some very good back-three players. Adding Zammo into that makes it even more exciting for not only us, but the fans as well."
