Severe Tropical Storm Wutip: Hong Kong's T1 to remain in force for most of Friday

The Hong Kong Observatory has said the No 1 typhoon warning signal will remain in force for most of Friday, as the storm edges slightly away from the city.
The forecaster said in a special weather warning at 8am on Friday that Severe Tropical Storm Wutip intensified on Thursday night but had taken a slightly westward path away from Hong Kong.
'The standby signal No 1 will remain in force for most of the time [on Friday],' it said.
'The Observatory will assess [between Friday night and Saturday morning] the need for issuing the strong wind signal No 3.'
Wutip, which is named after the Cantonese word for 'butterfly', will skirt the western part of Hainan Island on Friday and move towards Beibu Wan to Leizhou Peninsula, maintaining a distance of more than 500km (310 miles) from Hong Kong.
But the forecaster said winds were likely to strengthen gradually across the city during the daytime on Friday, later reaching up to gale force levels at higher ground.

Wutip weakens into a tropical storm: Observatory

Wutip weakens into a tropical storm: Observatory The Observatory says Wutip will skirt about 300 kilometres to the northwest of Hong Kong on Sunday morning. Photo courtesy of the Observatory Hong Kong's weather forecaster on Saturday said Wutip had weakened into a tropical storm, with the No. 3 warning signal expected to remain in force until at least noon on Sunday. The Observatory raised the Strong Wind Signal No 3 at 12.20pm, but said the chance of issuing the No. 8 alert was rather low. Wutip will skirt about 300 kilometres to the northwest of Hong Kong on Sunday morning, according to the forecaster. "Severe Tropical Storm Wutip has weakened into a tropical storm," it said. "Locally, strong winds are prevailing over many places, occasionally reaching gale force on high ground in the western part of the territory. The outer rainbands of Wutip are also bringing squally showers to the coast of Guangdong." It also said local winds would "moderate progressively" on Sunday afternoon with Wutip moving away from Hong Kong and weakening gradually. "Although Wutip will dissipate gradually on Monday and Tuesday, an active southwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers to the coast of Guangdong," it added.

Severe Tropical Storm Wutip: Hong Kong hoists T3 storm signal

Hong Kong has raised the T3 storm signal as Severe Tropical Storm Wutip moves across the Leizhou Peninsula. The Observatory hoisted the signal at 12:20pm, with Wutip expected to bring strong winds around the Pearl River Estuary. 'With Wutip moving further inland and weakening, local winds will moderate progressively later tomorrow [Sunday],' the Observatory said. 'Although Wutip will depart and dissipate on Monday and Tuesday, an active southwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers to the coast of Guangdong. Members of the public should stay on the alert.' Rain is predicted for the next 10 days, with local winds expected to moderate progressively on Sunday. Typhoon Signal 3 The No. 3 signal warns of strong winds affecting, or expected to affect, Hong Kong within 12 hours. Classes of kindergartens and schools for children with physical or intellectual disabilities will be suspended. Scheduled ferry services may be cancelled as conditions worsen. Bus and MTR services are not affected. Residents should secure loose objects like flower pots or drying racks, and prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas. Climate crisis Tropical cyclones – which get their energy from warm ocean water – are strengthening and become ever more destructive because of warming seas. Over 90 per cent of excess heat in the atmosphere is ending up in oceans, according to NASA, as rising greenhouse gases prevent it from escaping to space.

Strong Wind Signal No 3 in force until Sunday noon

Strong Wind Signal No 3 in force until Sunday noon The Observatory says the chance of issuing a No 8 signal was rather low. Photo courtesy of the Observatory The Observatory issued the Strong Wind Signal No 3 on Saturday at 12.20pm, saying it remain in force at least until noon the next day, as strong winds from a severe tropical storm are expected to strengthen. But the chance of it being raised to a No 8 signal is "rather low" unless Severe Tropical Storm Wutip maintains a higher intensity over inland areas and takes a track closer to the Pearl River Estuary, according to the weather forecaster. Wutip was forecast to move northeast at about 22 kilometres per hour towards Leizhou Peninsula. "The strong winds associated with Wutip are expected to gradually prevail over the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Winds will strengthen progressively over the territory, and up to gale force on high ground later," the Observatory said. The Education Bureau announced that classes of kindergartens, schools for children with physical disability and schools for children with intellectual disability were suspended. "These schools, however, should keep their premises open and implement contingency measures to look after arriving students. They should ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home," the bureau said. Several ferry routes to and from outlying islands, as well as the Ngong Ping 360 cable car service also stopped operations. According to the forecast, Wutip will move further inland and weaken and local winds are expected to "moderate progressively" on Sunday. While the severe tropical storm will depart and dissipate on Monday and Tuesday, the Observatory warned that there will be heavy showers along the coast of Guangdong due to an active south-westerly airstream.
