Federico Valverde missed an injury-time penalty as Real Madrid were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in their Club World Cup clash at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday.
A crowd of 62,415 - heavily populated with Real supporters - watched on as new manager Xabi Alonso's debut ended in frustration, with his side unable to find a late winner against a spirited and well-drilled Al Hilal outfit.
Al Hilal started brightly, nearly taking the lead in the 19th minute when Salem Aldawsari's looping volley into the box found Marcos Leonardo, who fired narrowly wide.
Real gradually found their rhythm, with Rodrygo threatening from distance before they broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. Gonzalo, starting in place of the absent Kylian Mbappe, sparked a sweeping counterattack and continued his run into the box, where he delicately finished off Rodrygo's low cross after a slick exchange of passes.
The lead didn't last long. Four minutes before the break, Al Hilal were awarded a penalty after Raul Asencio was adjudged to have pulled down Marcos Leonardo. Ruben Neves stepped up and calmly converted to level the match.
Real pushed forward in the second half, with Arda Guler - introduced at the break - nearly restoring the lead as he crashed a volley off the crossbar from a Vinicius Jr. delivery. The Spanish side looked to be gaining control, and with just minutes left, were handed a golden chance to seal victory when Mohammed Al Qahtani was penalised for a hand to Fran Garcia's face during a tussle.Valverde stepped up, but his spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Bounou, ensuring Al Hilal earned a valuable point from a hard-fought contest.
'It was a very good match from my team,' said Italian coach Simone Inzaghi, who also took charge of Al Hilal for the first time. 'We played an excellent, organised game. We stood up to one of the top three teams in the world, and I'm very satisfied.'Alonso, meanwhile, acknowledged his team's slow start: 'In the first half we were missing a lot - both in possession and defensively. We gave the ball away too easily and lacked balance. These were things we had talked about, but it took us some time to adjust.'

‘Could a woman make your team, fellas': Donald Trump leaves Juventus players awkward
A White House visit to meet American president Donald Trump turned awkward for players from Juventus after the unpredictable world leader asked them for their views on transgender players. The Italian team is in the USA to participate at the Club World Cup. Hours after their awkward encounter with Trump, they found themselves on firmer footing at Washington DC's Audi Field where they demolished Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates 5-0 in a game. Media reports said that Juventus players were left awkward while lining up behind the US president when, right after praising the team as a 'great team', Trump put them on the spot by asking them, 'Could a woman make your team, fellas?' The Guardian noted that Juve players 'smiled nervously but did not offer a response' at this question. A clip of the exchange shows dumbstruck players looking at each other when asked the question. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was one of the people present in the room when this exchange happened. Trump repeated the question. This time, Juventus's general manager, Damien Comolli, tried to pull a rescue act of his besieged players. 'We have a very good women's team,' he offered while talking about the Juventus Women, who are the reigning Serie A champions. 'But they should be playing with women,' Trump shot back. This time, it was Comolli's turn to stay mum. 'See they are being very diplomatic,' observed the US President. Before leaving, the team delegation presented the US President with a club shirt. In February, Trump had signed an executive order that banned transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. It was a move that was branded as discriminatory by human rights activists. The order not just provided regulations but also gave legal interpretations. It ordered the US Department of Education to investigate high schools thought to be non-compliant.

Animal-rights protester disrupts Club World Cup with anti-Morocco sign
An animal-rights activist ran onto the field during a Club World Cup match between Manchester City and Wydad at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday, urging Morocco to reform its treatment of stray animals. The man wore a shirt that read, Morocco, end the stray dog massacre, and carried a sign that read, Morocco: stop shooting dogs and cats. He ran for a few seconds before he was tackled by security workers and escorted out of the stadium. The protester's shirt and sign included the logo of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. @giseleofficial Activists stormed the field at the FIFA Club World Cup to demand an end to Morocco's plan to kill—by shooting, poisoning, & burning alive— 99% of homeless dogs ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Join us & speak out to end the massacre! — PETA (@peta) June 18, 2025 Wydad is based in Casablanca, Morocco. PETA has been critical of the Moroccan government for its treatment of stray cats and dogs. Morocco is among the hosts of the 2030 World Cup. The government has expanded a Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return program for stray animals, but activists have claimed that animals are being killed rather than neutered.
