Tanghalang Pilipino ignites 39th season with powerful musicals on Filipino revolutionary heroes
Through a dynamic mix of original musicals, educational initiatives, and outreach programs, the company aims to keep alive the revolutionary spirit of the nation's visionary heroes: Emilio Jacinto, Gregoria de Jesus, and Apolinario Mabini.
These three figures, who ignited revolutions of thought and action during the nation's most tumultuous eras, are at the heart of this year's season. Tanghalang Pilipino invites audiences to revisit their legacies and continue their fight for justice and freedom — not with arms, but through the power of performance, story, and truth.
'Pingkian: Isang Musikal'
Opening the season is the critically acclaimed "Pingkian: Isang Musikal," which returns to the stage following a sold-out run and a Best Musical win at the 2024 Aliw Awards. Written by Juan Ekis and composed by Ejay Yatco, the production brings to life the story of Emilio Jacinto, the brilliant young revolutionary and 'Brains of the Katipunan.'
The musical explores Jacinto's short yet significant life through vivid flashbacks, fever dreams, and hallucinations as he confronts his ideals, fears, and the sacrifices demanded by the revolution. Portrayed by Vic Robinson, Jacinto's journey is framed by encounters with key historical figures, including Andres Bonifacio and Jose Rizal.

Directed by Jenny Jamora, with choreography by Jomelle Era and production design by Carlo Villafuerte Pagunaling, "Pingkian" features a stellar cast that includes Gab Pangilinan, Paw Castillo, Kakki Teodoro, and Tex Ordoñez-De Leon.

'Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical'
Following "Pingkian" is "Gregoria Lakambini," an original musical that shifts the spotlight to Gregoria de Jesus, one of the most overlooked figures of the Philippine Revolution. Told through the high-energy sound and visual language of a contemporary P-Pop girl group, the production follows Oryang's transformation from a spirited young woman in Caloocan to the steadfast 'Lakambini of the Katipunan.'

The musical traces her courage, love, and political awakening alongside Andres Bonifacio, all while asserting her voice in a movement often dominated by men. Played by Marynor Madamesila, Gregoria emerges as a symbol of strength, resistance, and feminine power long written in the margins of history.
'Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical'
Rounding out the season is the 10th-anniversary restaging of "Mabining Mandirigma," Tanghalang Pilipino's steampunk musical on Apolinario Mabini, the paralytic intellectual whose ideas and unwavering principles helped shape the Filipino republic. First staged in 2015 and a winner of 12 Gawad Buhay Awards, the musical now returns with a more intimate and daring production.

Portrayed by Shaira Opsimar, Mabini is depicted not just as a historical figure but as a radical thinker who challenged Filipinos to transcend personal interest and work toward a common national identity. The cast also features Arman Ferrer and David Ezra alternating as Emilio Aguinaldo, with Tex Ordoñez-De Leon as Dionisia.

A version of this article was previously published in 2020. The old saying goes that a sequel is never as good as the original, and over the years, plenty of films have proved this to be the case. Fortunately for the team behind Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to 2003′s iconic body-swap comedy, critics seem pretty impressed with the follow-up, with many hailing it as a worthy successor to Freaky Friday. But what about those rare sequels that somehow manage to better the movie that came before it? Here are 11 of the most celebrated follow-ups in modern movie history... Addams Family Values We don't use terms like 'perfection' lightly, but if there were ever a perfect family comedy then Addams Family Values might well be it. The fact it's actually a sequel to a less-revered live-action version of the classic cartoon is even more impressive. Obviously all of the cast members playing the creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and, indeed, altogether ooky family shine as brightly as their dark surroundings will allow (special shout-out to Anjelica Huston serving true macabre glamour as Morticia). But Addams Family Values really belongs to new addition Joan Cusack, who stars as Uncle Fester's love interest Debbie. Toy Story 3 Who'd have guessed that an animated buddy comedy about a toy cowboy and a plastic astronaut would have sparked one of the most lucrative film sagas of recent times? And while Toy Story 2 – released four years after the original – kicked things up several notches, it was the third instalment in the series that people really went wild for. Toy Story 3 served up adorable new characters, scooped an impressive Best Picture nomination at the Oscars and, crucially, delivered not one but two ugly-cry moments. Paddington 2 Even though the original Paddington film was well-received when it first hit cinemas in 2014 – featuring a CGI version of the classic character interacting with live-action actors – few could predict just how beloved its sequel would go on to become. Not only was it nominated for Outstanding British Film at the Baftas, it's also one of the few movies with a perfect score on review site Rotten Tomatoes. With 238 positive reviews, it's also the highest-rated film on the entire website. Take that, Citizen Kane. The Dark Knight Like many, we were sold on The Dark Knight from the moment we saw its infamous viral marketing campaign (back in the day when viral marketing campaigns were actually still new and exciting). We could probably talk all day about how this film is a level up on Batman Begins, from Christopher Nolan's direction, to the incredible costumes and special effects. But let's be honest, this film is all about Heath Ledger, who earned a posthumous Academy Award for his unforgettable portrayal of the Joker. Aliens Although the original Alien divided critics upon its original release in 1979, the film quickly garnered a loyal following, and by the mid-1980s, was revered among fans of sci-fi. Putting out a sequel was therefore always going to be a bit of a risk, but fortunately 1986′s Aliens more than lived up to its predecessor. It earned Sigourney Weaver a game-changing Oscar nomination as the star of a sci-fi film. It has also been named the Best Sequel Of All Time by Empire magazine. Mad Max: Fury Road Listen, we get it, Fury Road was billed as a 'revisiting' of the original Mad Max trilogy, rather than a straight-up sequel or a traditional reboot. Still, the film was so well-received – check that 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes if you don't believe us, not to mention its six Oscar wins – we felt we couldn't leave it off this list. Plus, who would pass up the opportunity to see Charlize Theron in all her buzzed glory again? Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars has so many different instalments, and a fan community that stretches far and wide, that it would be literally impossible to decide which of the numerous sequels is the superior one. So while we'd struggle to pinpoint which of film is the best, we've gone with The Empire Strikes Back for the simple reason it contains arguably the most iconic moment in Star Wars history, when Darth Vader's true identity is revealed. Terminator 2: Judgement Day He said 'I'll be back', and apparently he meant it, although it did take seven years. Terminator 2: Judgement Day was hailed as even better than the original film by many critics, who were wowed by the advanced special effects (which went on to win one of the film's four Academy Awards). The success of Terminator 2 led to a number of additional spin-offs and sequels, although none of these have quite been able to match the original two films. Avengers: Endgame Essentially the sequel to around 100 other films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame was much-awaited when it hit cinemas in 2019, wrapping up stories that began in the Iron Man, Thor and Captain America film series. Fortunately, the majority of cinema-goers felt the ambitious project was worth the wait, with Avengers: Endgame landing rave reviews and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time (that's second-highest, when adjusted for inflation). The Godfather Part II The first sequel to ever win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (the only other being Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King), Godfather II is so revered it was added to the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress due to its cultural significance, alongside the original Godfather film. The same can not be said for the follow-up, Godfather III. Skyfall Although Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace proved popular, many 007 fans still breathed a sigh of relief when Skyfall was released, as they felt it was more in keeping with the James Bond franchise than Daniel Craig's first two outings. Skyfall won largely positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised the decision to give more material for Dame Judi Dench to work with, and became the highest-grossing film in the UK ever at that time. Follow-up Spectre was similarly well-received, with the Daniel's fifth and final Bond film, No Time To Die, set to hit cinemas... soon. Let's just say soon. Chinese state media says Nvidia H20 chips not safe for China
BEIJING (Reuters) -Nvidia's H20 chips pose security concerns for China, a social media account affiliated with China's state media said on Sunday, after Beijing raised concerns over backdoor access in those chips. The H20 chips are also not technologically advanced or environmentally friendly, the account, Yuyuan Tantian, which is affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, said in an article published on WeChat. "When a type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe, as consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it," the article concluded. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. H20 artificial intelligence chips were developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market after the U.S. imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump banned their sales in April amid escalating trade tensions with China, but reversed the ban in July. China's cyberspace watchdog said on July 31 that it had summoned Nvidia to a meeting, asking the U.S. chipmaker to explain whether its H20 chips had any backdoor security risks - a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Nvidia later said its products had no "backdoors" that would allow remote access or control. In its article, Yuyuan Tantian said Nvidia chips could achieve functions including "remote shutdown" through a hardware "backdoor." Yuyuan Tantian's comment followed criticism against Nvidia by People's Daily, another Chinese state media outlet. In a commentary earlier this month, People's Daily said Nvidia must produce "convincing security proofs" to eliminate Chinese users' worries over security risks in its chips and regain market trust.

Woman receives criminal conviction for uninsured motorbike when hospitalised with mental health crisis
A woman has been convicted in Britain's fast-track courts for not insuring her motorbike when she was in hospital recovering from a mental health breakdown. The 30-year-old was in the care of mental health services when she was accused by the DVLA of failing to pay the bill on her bike. Facing prosecution last month, she wrote to the court to explain that she was 'not in a stable frame of mind' when the insurance was not renewed. But her letter was not enough to halt the prosecution, which was dealt with in the controversial Single Justice Procedure. 'When the offence occurred in January 2025, I was struggling with my mental health', she wrote, setting out her admission to a specialist hospital for people in crisis. 'I have been treated by the community mental health team since my discharge from hospital, and have a care coordinator who will provide a letter to confirm this is necessary. 'I have not yet returned to work due to ill health and am in receipt of PIP for my diagnosis of depression and anxiety and take daily medication for this. 'When this offence took place, I was not in a stable frame of mind, hence the stay in hospital for treatment for my mental health. 'I was struggling to keep myself safe and did not have the capacity to deal with any life administration, not did I have access to any letters from the DVLA.' According to court papers, the motorbike was flagged as uninsured on January 21, the same month the woman says she was admitted to hospital. She added in her letter she declared the vehicle 'off road' in March 2025 'when I began to work towards recovery'. The DVLA decided to prosecute on July 10, and the case was dealt with at Reading magistrates court two weeks later. The magistrate, sitting in private, imposed a six-month conditional discharge and ordered that she pay a £26 victim surcharge. The woman, from Hull, was spared further financial penalties, but does now have a criminal conviction against her name. The Single Justice Procedure was invented in 2015 as a fast-track way of dealing with low-level criminal offences. Magistrates sit in private and deal with cases based on written evidence only. But the design of the court system means letters of mitigation from defendants – sometimes containing important details about the circumstances of an offence being committed – are not routinely seen by prosecutors. The DVLA, which routinely prosecutes tens of thousands of motorists each month in the Single Justice Procedure, has called on the government to overhaul the system. The agency believes prosecutors – such as itself – should see all mitigation letters before a case goes before a magistrate, so they can decide if the case remains in the public interest. The government conducted a consultation on possible changes, ending in May, but has yet to take any action. The Standard, which has exposed multiple flaws in the way the fast-track courts operate, is committed to regularly highlighting the harsh convictions that are imposed, on frail pensioners, grieving families, and people who are severely mentally unwell.
