One person killed and a 5-year-old girl wounded in Baltimore shooting
Aug. 10 (UPI) -- One man was killed and 5 others injured in a shooting in Baltimore Saturday night, police said.
Victims ranged in age between 5 and 52 years, and a 5-year-old girl was shot in the hand. A 38-year-old man died from his injuries, police reported. The other victims received non life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses reported a block party taking place in the 5100 block of Queensbury Ave. blocks from Baltimore's famous Pimlico horse racing track shortly before the shooting, which police said was reported about 8:45 p.m. EDT, according to local news reports.
"Once on scene, officers located six victims suffering from gunshot wounds, four males and two females," Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said during a news conference. "One of the victims is a 5-year-old girl. All of the victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment."

At least 1 dead, dozens hurt in U.S. Steel plant blast near Pittsburgh
Aug. 11 (UPI) -- At least one person is dead and several are injured, including those trapped in rubble, after an explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, officials said. Allegheny County Emergency Services spokesperson Kasey Reigner told WPXI-TV that "dozens were injured" in the blast. Also, two people are missing as crews searched for victims trapped in rubble. At 10:50 a.m. EDT, emergency medical services received a call for an "ongoing situation" at the plant for a potential mass casualty event, Reigner told the Post-Gazette. A Level 3 Mass Casualty incident was declared and more resources across the region were deployed. Allegheny County Health Department advised people who live within a mile to stay inside. The extent of injuries wasn't clear, though several people were taken to hospitals. Allegheny Health Network told WPXI that it was receiving patients at several of its hospitals, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said two patients were taken to Mercy Hospital. WTAE-TV's helicopter captured fire crews battling flames while ambulances rushed to the area. Breath Project captured when the explosion occurred. "Felt like thunder," Zachary Buday, who was working close to the scene, told WTAE. "Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, then shook the building. Then we saw the smoke coming up from the steel mill." He said there wasn't fire but black smoke. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, who grew up near the area in McKeesport, posted on X: "The Commonwealth is providing whatever resources and manpower are needed to help with emergency response. Please stay away from the area at this time to allow emergency crews to do their job and follow all future guidance from officials for those that live nearby." Gov. Josh Shapiro posted on X that his administration "is in touch with local officials." He said: "The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities." Sen. John Fetterman, who serves Pennsylvanians, wrote on X: "My team and I are tracking this explosion and waiting for more information." Calirton Coke Works, which is situated along the Monongahela River, is considered the largest coke manufacturing plant in North America with several million tons produced annually. In the process, raw coal is turned into coke, which is used in steelmaking. The company's headquarters are in Pittsburgh. U.S. Steel, which was founded in 1901, has about 22,000 employees with revenue of $15.6 billion in 2024. In May, President Donald Trump announced a partnership with Japan's Nippon Steel Corporation. He also said there would be a 50% tariff on imported steel. He appeared at the Edgar Thomas Plant near Braddock.

Trump announces federal takeover of Washington law enforcement

Photo by Yuri Gripas/UPI | License Photo Aug. 11 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump announced Monday that the federal government will take over law enforcement in Washington, including deploying the National Guard in the nation's capital. Trump signed an executive order declaring crime an emergency in Washington. Surrounded by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and other cabinet members, Trump announced in a press conference that the administration intends to crack down on violent crime. "I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse," Trump said in the press conference. "This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we're going to take our capital back." The president said he's invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. He said the D.C. National Guard will deploy to fight crime, and he said he may deploy units from other states if needed. On Friday, Trump announced that federal agents will begin enforcing crime in the city. The new patrols are led by the U.S. Park Police, and include agents from the U.S. Capitol Police, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, D.C. Metropolitan Police, Drug Enforcement Administration and other agencies. He announced that Attorney General Pam Bondi will take control of D.C. Metropolitan Police. "Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people, and we're not going to let it happen anymore," Trump said. Metro police data released this month said violent crime rates have continued to fall in 2025, with violent crime down 26% year-over-year. Homicide rates have dropped 12%, sex abuse by 49%, assault with a dangerous weapon by 20% and robbery by 28%. Trump, however, said, without explicitly identifying the person or providing details on the claim, that the administration was examining a person who claimed he was asked to falsify data. "And we had a recent indication, and there was a story about a man who just left. He quit because he was asked to do phony numbers on crime, and we're going to look into that," he said. "I think Pam [Bondi] is going to be looking into that, but he was asked by the city, I guess we don't want to show the real numbers. Let me do numbers so it looks like it's going down, not going down, and under Biden, it was a disaster, and nobody did anything about it. We're going to do things about it like you wouldn't believe." Trump mentioned that other U.S. cities are struggling with crime and indicated that Washington, won't be the last city that he might take over. "And this will go further. We're starting very strongly with D.C., and we're going to clean it up real quick, very quickly, as they say," he said. "I see too much violent crime being committed by young punks who think that they can get together in gangs and crews and beat the hell out of you or anyone else. They don't care where they are. They can be in Dupont Circle, but they know that we can't touch them. Why? Because the laws are weak. I can't touch you. If you're 14,15, 16,17- years-old, and you have a gun," U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said. "I convict someone of shooting another person with an illegal gun on a public bus in the chest intent to kill. I convict him. And you know what? The judge gives him probation and says, 'You should go to college.' We need to go after the D.C. council and their absurd laws. We need to get rid of this concept of, you know, no-cash bail." On Sunday evening, a former DOGE employee was allegedly attacked near his car in the district, drawing criticism from the president. Police arrested two 15-year-olds the next day. Pirro mentioned the incident. "I did a poster of the young man from DOGE who was beaten, bloodied, with a severe concussion, a broken nose, and then I did a poster of what happens to those kids, because I can't arrest them. I can't prosecute them. They go to family court, and they get to do yoga and arts and crafts," Pirro said at the press conference.

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe dies from shooting injuries

File Photo by Carlos Ortega/EPA Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe died Monday after he was shot in June. Uribe's wife, María Claudia Tarazona, made the announcement Monday morning on social media, and Fundación Santa Fe Bogotá, the hospital where Uribe was receiving care, also released a statement confirming his death. The hospital announced Saturday that Uribe's condition became critical due to a hemorrhage in his central nervous system and required "urgent neurosurgical procedures" to stabilize him. Uribe was shot in the head from behind during a campaign event in June. A 14-year-old was arrested as the suspected gunman, and three adults were also arrested in connection to the incident. All four were charged with attempted murder and illegal firearm possession, with the adults additionally charged for allegedly using a minor to commit a crime. A fifth person was arrested for purportedly ordering the attack. The attack on Uribe has stirred up memories in Columbia of the 1980s and 1990s when several political candidates and prominent figures were assassinated, and heightened concerns that violence fueled by criminal groups is on the rise.
