Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra is Morocco's least-known tourism asset. Located in the far south, it has long been burdened by geopolitical ambiguity and geographic remoteness. But it is now being recast as a showcase for Saharan heritage, eco-tourism, and cultural reawakening.
The regional capital, Laâyoune, offers a visual collage of contradictions. Palm-fringed avenues sit beside crumbling colonial buildings. Souks spill into grand squares like Place du Mechouar, where tensile canopies shade tea-sipping Sahrawis and football-mad children weave between them. Beyond the city, the landscape does much of the talking. Khenifiss National Park, a coastal wetland, attracts migratory birds in the tens of thousands. Flamingos, shelducks, and even ospreys wade through the Naïla lagoon, the largest of its kind in the country.

More recently, the region has found a different rhythm. Cultural festivals have begun to reassert Sahrawi identity. The Hassani Poetry Festival revives oral traditions that speak of exile, honour and endurance. More eclectic in tone, the Wennibik Festival fuses Bedouin instruments with hip-hop and reggae. Music workshops, backed by philanthropic outfits like the Phosboucraa Foundation, aim to train local youth and give Saharan traditions a modern beat.
Film, too, is having a moment. In 2024, Laâyoune hosted its first Desert Film Festival. Though modest in size, its ambition was clear: to document the desert not as a void but as a canvas where stories of migration, resilience and identity are played out in frame and form. Smara, once a religious centre, has retained its spiritual hush. Founded in the 19th century by a Sufi scholar, it was once famed for its Koranic library. These days it is more likely to attract curious travellers than devout pilgrims, but its decaying zawiya and script-covered walls retain a monastic gravity.
The local cuisine is blunt but sincere. Camel meat tagines and sand-baked bread dominate the menu. Tea – served in three rounds, as custom dictates – functions less as a refreshment than a ritual. Camel milk, rich and tangy, is a nod to a nomadic diet built for endurance.
Adventure tourism is the latest banner under which the region seeks economic redemption. Camel treks, desert camps, birdwatching and off-road excursions are increasingly packaged for visitors seeking what they call 'authenticity'. But the stakes are not only touristic. Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra remains politically sensitive. It is part of the Western Sahara region, a territory whose Moroccan identity is challenged by the Polisario Front, a separatist group financially and logistically supported by Algeria. For now, Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra remains off most itineraries. Yet for those who make the journey, it offers not just spectacle, but also substance.

The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity teams, deployed at border crossings and rest areas, carried out 45,465 interventions, including 2,858 medical interventions, according to the article. Palestinians swim from Moroccan coast to Ceuta to seek asylum

Three of them reportedly swam from the Moroccan coast before applying for asylum in Spain. On Saturday, seven Moroccan minors entered Ceuta the same way. According to city government figures, the section for unaccompanied minors is currently housing over 480 children, despite an optimal capacity of just 132 places. The overcrowding comes amid a surge in crossing attempts in recent weeks, fueled by favorable weather conditions, particularly dense fog. Since late July, Ceuta has faced a growing wave of irregular sea crossings, especially by Moroccan migrants, including hundreds of minors, along with adults of various nationalities. In the past two weeks alone, 361 people have entered via land routes, bringing the total since the start of the year to 1,452, a 7.2% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Spain's Interior Ministry. The minors' administration, which recorded the arrival of 73 children over a single weekend last month, warns that the current overcrowding makes it difficult to provide adequate care and meet established quality standards. Morocco's flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) is expanding its point-to-point network with the resumption of direct flights between Marrakech and French cities Lyon, Toulouse, Nantes, and Bordeaux starting October 10, 2025. The national carrier, a key player in Morocco's tourism sector, will also increase flights on existing routes linking the Red City to Marseille, as well as to Brussels, according to a RAM press release. RAM will operate two weekly flights from Marrakech to Toulouse, Lyon, Nantes, and Bordeaux. Starting October 10, 2025, direct flights to Toulouse and Lyon will operate on Mondays and Fridays, departing Marrakech-Menara International Airport at 8:15 a.m. (local time) and arriving in Toulouse at 11:45 a.m., and departing Marrakech at 3:20 p.m. to arrive in Lyon at 7:20 p.m. Return flights from Toulouse will depart at 12:45 p.m. to arrive in Marrakech at 2:20 p.m., while Lyon departures will be at 8:20 p.m. with arrival in Marrakech at 10:25 p.m. Starting October 11, 2025, direct Marrakech–Nantes flights will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, departing at 8:15 a.m. to arrive at Nantes Airport at 12:05 p.m., with return flights leaving Nantes at 1:05 p.m. and landing in Marrakech at 3:00 p.m. From October 12, 2025, the Marrakech–Bordeaux route will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, departing Marrakech at 5:10 p.m. to arrive in Bordeaux at 8:40 p.m., with returns leaving Bordeaux at 9:40 p.m. and landing in Marrakech at 11:20 p.m, the same source details.
