Private sector investment is vital for Sarawak to attain developed status by 2030, says state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang.
'Sarawak is aiming to become a developed state by 2030.
'This is our goal and we are very determined to achieve it.
'Of course, Sibu is part of this journey,' he said at the opening of the Ibraco sales gallery by Sarawak property developer Ibraco Bhd in Sibu.
Stating that Sibu's growth benefitted the state's development agenda, he added that it was vital for private sector contributions alongside government efforts.
Tiang pointed to the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan as a catalyst for Sibu's transformation, noting that groundwork for the first phase would be visible this year.
'Sarawak's ambition to achieve developed status is not for the government to achieve alone.
'We really need private sector investment,' he said.
In line with this, he welcomed the involvement of established property developers such as Ibraco that was exploring opportunities in Sibu.
'Two years ago, I spoke with the owners of Ibraco about coming to Sibu for development projects.
'The company's move to open a sales gallery here is a good start,' he said.
Tiang encouraged other developers to consider investing in Sibu.
'Sibu is a major town in the central zone with full potential.
'I am always ready to offer assistance to cater for the development of quality properties in Sibu,' he added.
The sales gallery in Jalan Tong Sang marked a milestone in the property developer's aim to better serve customers in Sarawak's central region.
It is supported by a dedicated team that can provide sales support to homebuyers and investors.
Ibraco's portfolio comprises township developments in three different regions.
They are in Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Bintulu, while the second residential development was in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Among Ibraco's Sarawak projects are The NorthBank, Kuching, featuring modern homes and commercial hubs offering convenience amid lush green spaces.
In the nearby medical and education hub of Kota Samarahan, Ibraco built Arden City for investment opportunities.
Town Square Bintulu that offered modern architectural designs and leisure concepts, was Ibraco's first development venture away from Kuching.
In Selangor, NewUrban redefines urban living with contemporary homes and lifestyle amenities for modern city dwellers.

13MP to drive sustainable, inclusive growth

PUTRAJAYA: The strategies and initiatives outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13) will strengthen the nation's commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, in line with Malaysia's role as President of the UN‑Habitat Assembly. Housing and Local Government (KPKT) Minister Nga Kor Ming said the plan, tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week, reflects the Unity government's determination to chart a comprehensive, sustainable and resilient development path for the well-being of the people. He said that among the major areas of focus are the wider adoption of the Industrialised Building System (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the construction sector. 'This approach improves efficiency and work quality while reducing costs, minimising material wastage and speeding up project completion,' he said in a statement today, adding that wider use of IBS and BIM would also help lower construction costs, particularly for public housing projects. He said the move would support the government's target of building one million affordable homes within 10 years, in line with KPKT's commitment to providing quality, comfortable and affordable housing. In line with its aspiration to develop more inclusive cities, the ministry is also formulating strategies to expand the implementation of transit-oriented development (TOD). 'Integrating affordable housing projects with public transport systems through the TOD concept will improve access, particularly for the B40 group, to education and employment opportunities,' he said. Nga said the ministry will also continue data-driven housing planning through the development of an integrated housing information repository, and is considering requiring developers to hand over strata titles upon vacant possession to safeguard homebuyers' rights. He added that KPKT remains committed to assisting the urban hardcore poor through programmes to rebuild and repair dilapidated homes, with 4,814 units repaired and 245 new homes built in 2023 and 2024, involving an allocation of RM104.4 million. Regarding solid waste management, Nga stated that KPKT will strengthen the implementation of the circular economy to ensure more efficient and sustainable waste management. 'All these initiatives under MP13 are in line with KPKT's principle that no one is left behind or marginalised. MP13 provides an important foundation for realising more sustainable, inclusive and liveable cities for all,' he said. - Bernama

Fewer than 1,500 property purchases by foreigners in 2024, says minister

PETALING JAYA: There were 1,459 property purchases by foreigners last year, says Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said this accounts for 0.56% or RM3.054bil of the total 259,058 property transactions worth RM103.9bil by Malaysian citizens last year. "The Ministry's priority is to ensure every citizen has a place to live, whether owned or rented, under the concept of housing as a place to live (shelter for all), in line with the aspirations and goals of the National Housing Policy (2018-2025)," he said. Nga stated this in a parliamentary written reply dated July 31 in response to Ismail Muttalib (Perikatan-Maran), who asked about the statistics on foreigners owning houses in Malaysia. Ismail also inquired about the number of Malaysians owning more than two homes. According to Nga, the Basic Amenities Survey report 2022 by the Statistics Department noted 76.5% of Malaysians owned a home but did not specify if they owned more than two. Meanwhile, Nga said the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme under the Syarikat Jaminan Kredit Perumahan Bhd (SJKP) has approved guaranteed loans totalling RM20.9bil based on 88,507 applications. Nga also said the government is considering expanding the rent-to-buy scheme for the people's housing programme (PPR), considering changing trends where buyers are concerned about economic stability.
