Portobello club leads global coastal rowing
The event hosted by Stranraer on Loch Ryan sea-loch finishes on Saturday and Eastern sit ahead of current world champion teams from Dundrum with another Northern Irish club, Sketrick, currently in third place.
Ailsa Cook, from the Eastern club, said: 'We're really delighted to be leading, We came to the competition aiming to be the fastest club in Scotland and we've been blown away by the standard of the racing,. We hope to hold on to the lead but we've still got some hotly contested races to come.
'The 50+ men are excited about the final, they talk about having a bit of magic dust in their boat because they row so well together.'
Some 2000 rowers will compete until Saturday having travelled from the likes of Australia, USA, Canada and South Africa as well as Europe.

Martindale signs new deal at Livingston
David Martindale has committed himself to Livingston until the summer of 2027 after signing a new deal and there is an option of a third year should both parties wish to continue. Martindale (pictured in the club's media room by Nigel Duncan) originally joined the West Lothian-based club, who play at the Home of the Set Fare Arena, as a volunteer in 2014 and this season marks his sixth year at the helm. He is now understood to be the longest serving manager in the William Hill Premiership. The manager said: 'During the previous seasons it had for us all to focus us all at the club and I will remain forever grateful to Dave Black, John Ward and John McIlvogue for allowing me the opportunity to try and take the club back to the Premiership. 'I did have it in my head that if we could take the club back to the Premiership it would probably be my last season with Livingston and allow me to leave the club in the best position possible. 'But, when Calvin and his team came in, it gave everyone at the club a massive lift and the more we all spoke and worked together, the more my appetite grew to be part of this so long as they wanted me to remain at Livingston.' He added: 'It was a very easy decision and a very easy process and I feel a genuine honour and privilege to be the manager of Livingston FC and my desire to do everything I can for this club has only got stronger as the months have passed.' Lanarkshire cheerleaders prepare for World Championships In America
Fame Xtreme Dance & Cheer's youth team 'Showtime' are fundraising for the trip. Bellshill-based Fame Xtreme Dance & Cheer's youth team 'Showtime' have secured a bid to compete at the All-Star World Championships. The prestigious event will be held in Orlando, Florida, from April 16 to 19, 2026. Fame Xtreme chiefs say this incredible opportunity 'is a dream come true' for these young athletes (aged eight to 12), who all live within the Lanarkshire area and train in Bellshill. They now aim to put Scotland on the map as they go head-to-head with the best teams from around the world. As the team prepares for their trip to America, their fundraising efforts are already underway. The team are also seeking sponsorship from local business and individuals who want to help make this journey possible. All funds raised will contribute towards competition fees and training wear. They are now popular events on the sea fishing calendar and Portobello Beach, Seafield, Newhaven (East and West) and Joppa are the venues for the up-coming winter league. Sponsors are Edinburgh Angling Centre/Fishing Meagastore and tackle firm, Cox & Rawle and all registration is between 6pm and 6.15pm. Anglers during last year's competition Fishing at all venues is from 7pm to 10pm and the first match is at Portobello Beach on October 24. Registration is at the Bridge Street car park EH15 1TG. It is Seafield for Match 2 on October 31 with registration at Marine Esplanade EH6 7DP with Match 3 at Newhaven (East) on November 14. Registration is at Western Harbour View EH6 6PG with the next event at Portobello Promenade on November 28. Registration is at Fillyside Road EH15 1TB. Loganlea near Flotterstone host their young fishers day on Sunday, August 17, targeted at those aged between ten and 16. Cost is £15 per child and instruction will be given.
