IndiGo to start new routes to connect Assam's cities with India's major hubs: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 17 (ANI): IndiGo will start new routes to connect Assam's cities with major hubs of the country, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He added that the long-standing demand for a Jorhat-Delhi route will also be fulfilled from 20th September.
'Good news for Assam's Air Travellers! Post my discussion with the Indigo management, the airline will start new routes to connect Assam's cities with major hubs of the country,' Sarma said in a post on X.
'The long-standing demand of a Jorhat-Delhi route will also be fulfilled from 20th September,' he added.
On Monday, IndiGo announced it will operate direct flights between Delhi and Jorhat in Assam (four times in a week) from September 20, 2025, and daily direct flights connecting the national capital to Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, from September 16, 2025.
These flights will strengthen connectivity from Delhi to the gateway to northeast India and southern Tamil Nadu, respectively, boosting tourism, facilitating trade, and supporting local businesses.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, 'We are pleased to introduce exclusive direct flights from Delhi to Jorhat as well as Tiruchirappalli, reinforcing our commitment to expanding domestic connectivity and enhancing access across the country. These daily flights will strive to provide affordable travel options to explore the rich cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders these regions have to offer.'
Jorhat is both a spiritual and economic gem of northeast India. It is close to Majuli, the world's largest river island, which is a centre for Vaishnavite culture and monasteries.
Economically, Jorhat thrives on its tea industry, producing some of the finest teas globally, and serves as a hub for agriculture and trade. The city's proximity to Kaziranga National Park also boosts eco-tourism, supporting local livelihoods and conservation efforts.
Earlier on March 7, IndiGo announced the operation of a direct flight service between Tiruchirappalli and Jaffna from March 30, 2025.
This new route has been introduced to cater to the growing demand and will provide more options for both business and leisure travellers who wish to travel from South India to this historical gem in the northern province of Sri Lanka.
The daily direct flights will facilitate travel for our customers and foster economic growth and cultural exchange between the two regions.
Speaking about the new route, Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, 'We are pleased to expand our presence in Sri Lanka with the launch of our exclusive Tiruchirappalli-Jaffna route.'
Tiruchirappalli, or Trichy, is a vibrant city in Tamil Nadu, known for its rich heritage, spiritual significance, and industrial growth.
Home to iconic landmarks like the Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, it attracts pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
Trichy is also a key educational hub and industrial centre, housing NIT Trichy and a thriving manufacturing sector. With its strategic location, international airport, and growing economy, the city serves as a major gateway to southern India. (ANI)

New Delhi: Air India on Tuesday, 17 June 2025 afternoon announced the cancelled of its Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flight AI 159. The airlines said the reason behind the cancellation was the unavailability of aircraft due to airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks and that there was no technical problem, said a spokesperson of the airlines. Flight AI 159 was scheduled to depart at 1.10 pm but was rescheduled to 3 pm while at 1.45 pm Air India confirmed that the flight had been cancelled. A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was supposed to fly as AI 159, according to the Air India website. 'Flight AI159 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick has been cancelled today due to the unavailability of the aircraft, resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed,' said Air India. 'We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and have made alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination. We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by the passengers. Consequently, flight AI170 from London Gatwick to Amritsar of 17 June stands cancelled,' it added. 'I was travelling to London but it has been cancelled. The crew did not provide any reason or details about a refund,' said an incensed passenger while talking to news agency ANI even as airport sources said that the stranded passengers will be re-routed. This comes days after the horrific crash of Air India's AI 171, also a 787-8 Dreamliner flying on the same route, i.e., from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.

Spear Corps holds meeting to boost road and hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh
Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), June 17 (ANI): In a major boost to infrastructure in North Eastern States, the Indian Army's Spear Corps held a meeting in Arunachal Pradesh to discuss improving roads and hydroelectric power projects. The meeting was led by the head of the Dao Division and included senior officials from BRO, THDC, SJVN, NHIDCL, and the Arunachal government. They focused on working together to build and upgrade important roads in remote areas and to complete hydroelectric projects on time. In a post on X, Spear Corps said, '#SpearCorps organised an Integrated Stakeholders Meeting on Road Infrastructure and Hydro Electric Power Projects in #ArunachalPradesh. The meeting was chaired by GOC #DaoDivision wherein senior officials from #BRO, #THDC, #SJVN, #NHIDCL and @mygovarunachal attended.' 'Deliberations centred on synergising efforts to construct and upgrade vital road links in the remote and strategically significant areas of Eastern #ArunachalPradesh. Special attention was given to the proposed hydroelectric power Projects in the state. All stakeholders agreed to synchronise efforts to ensure the timely execution of projects, thus bolstering national security and promoting socio-economic development in the region,' the post stated. Recently, Arunachal Pradesh declared 2025-35 the Decade of Hydro Power in an effort to harness its significant hydropower potential, estimated at 58,000 MW. The decision was taken during the Arunachal Pradesh government's special cabinet meeting on Friday, which was attended by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the Governor, and the Deputy Chief Minister. In a press statement of the CMO Arunachal Pradesh, it said that during the Decade of Hydro Power, the government aims to undertake strategic policy and governance measures not just to harness the hydropower potential through a judicious mix of mega, large and small hydroelectric projects, but also to create a stable and supportive policy and regulatory framework for the overall development of the industrial ecosystem in the state, both as a source of economic growth and as a means of generating employment and self-employment opportunities for youth of Arunachal Pradesh. With around 19 GW of hydropower projects under development with cumulative investments of over Rs 2 lakh crore in the next 10 years, Arunachal Pradesh is estimated to receive annual revenues of Rs 4,525 crore from the sale of free power from HEPs from 2035 onwards, the statement stated.
