Players Just Ensured Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Record Score Can't Be Touched

I wrote an article over the weekend that confirmed that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the RPG from first-time developer Sandfall, was in fact that highest user-scored game in Metacritic history.
Now, players have caught wind of that. Some pushed back on this, saying it was early and this was just based on a few hundred reviews playing super early. Well, people have been playing over the course of the weekend, and there are now 600% more reviews in, up to 3,300, and the score has actually increased to a 9.7/10 from a 9.6 previously.
I've said that it's possible scores fall in time, but what's just happened here has cemented Expedition 33's title of the highest scored game on this platform. Nothing else is close, or will get close, anytime soon.
These thousands of reviews mean that of the top 100+ best-scored games on the Metacritic list, it's already passed many of those in total scores. And again, this is not a close competition. I've only been able to find one 9.3 at all, The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC. Every other historic game you've ever heard of is somewhere between an 8.9-9.2. Yes, that one. Yes, that one too. Check any one you like.

Sandfall
So, is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actually 0.5 out of 10 better than every game in history? I haven't played it yet (I start today), but I have heard the praise and I mean…still no. I don't buy that. I am not saying the game doesn't deserve high scores, but we are seeing some level of a 'love bomb' here, the opposite of a review bomb. Early impressions are so good that people are racing out to give it 10s. Then articles are written about the scores (more than just mine) and people fly back to give it even more 10s, hence the 600% increase and 24 hours moving the score up. I have seen this happen with other games, Stellar Blade comes to mind most recently, but even that ultimately ended up with a 9.2. Still, I've never seen anything like this.
I mean, whatever. Give it that honor. It sounds like a game that is universally beloved and if we want to hand this achievement to this tiny studio for an amazing game, I'm all for it. But what's just happened is that this is going to be emblazoned as the top scoring game for the foreseeable future, which is certainly something you do not see every day. Or every year. Or every generation.

I've finally found a PS5 controller that's better than the DualSense — and no, it's not the DualSense Edge

The PS5 Slim is my favorite console. The pride and joy of my living room. A piece of tech I use nearly every day. Something that has brought me hours and hours of happiness. Granted, I was a little late to the next-gen console party as I only bought my PS5 Slim at the end of 2023 (I clung on to my PS4 until the very end), but it's some of the best money I've ever spent. Whether you're on a budget or are an eSports pro in dire need of a gamepad that will give you a competitive edge, we've ranked the best PC game controllers! Or if you like gaming on the go, check out our guide to the best mobile controllers. I've spent hundreds of hours playing my favorite RPGs, such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Baldur's Gate 3 and Assassin's Creed Shadows. But what good is a console without a great controller? I love the standard DualSense as it has rarely given me much to complain about, and I've often thought of grabbing a DualSense Edge. First-party controllers aren't everything, though, as I've found after testing the new Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded. Now I ask myself, "Why would you get the DualSense Edge if you can just get the new and improved Victrix?" The Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded improves on its predecessor by introducing Hall Effect triggers and thumbsticks. My first impressions of it are solid as the controller's chunky grips make it comfortable to use, and it comes with a swappable Fightpad module, two alternate d-pads, two swappable thumbsticks, and a pair of octagonal thumbstick gates. It is a formidable alternative to the DualSense Edge. I've spent a few hours with the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded and I'll be spending more before I write up my full review, but my first impressions are highly positive. The controller improves on its predecessor by adding Hall Effect thumbsticks and triggers, and with swappable modules and sticks, it has quickly become my go-to gamepad. If you're still wondering whether you should get the DualSense Edge, I'm here to throw a spanner in the works. Here are all the reasons why I think you should get the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded instead. Hall Effect and TMR are all the rage today in the computing and gaming worlds. This technology basically makes controllers (and keyboards) more responsive, enabling pinpoint precision, and more durable as it negates the possibility of stick drift (we all hate stick drift, right?). Turtle Beach is no stranger to adding this tech to its controllers, and the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is no different. The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded improves on its predecessor — the PDP Victrix Pro BFG — by introducing Hall Effect triggers and thumbsticks, designed to give you a competitive edge. I used the controller to play a bit of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (can you tell I'm a little obsessed?) and F1 22, and I noticed a big difference in my performance. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. You see, the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded's triggers have switches that can be toggled to one of five positions. For instance, you can enable Hair Trigger which turns the mechanism into a short, clicky press, or you can use the highest setting which requires you to push the trigger all the way down to activate — like on the DualSense. In F1 22, I settled for a medium press to switch gears as I didn't want my fingers to get too tired while turning tight corners in Monaco. In Expedition 33, I used Hair Trigger so that I could simply tap R2 to toggle Gradient Counter — after all, the key to winning battles in the game is parrying and countering on time. There are also four back buttons on the controller which can be customized via companion software — or you can disable them so that you don't accidentally hit them while in the heat of battle. They give the gamepad an ergonomic advantage as you can personalize them to suit your playstyle. I won't lie, using my DualSense after the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded felt boring and fatiguing! What sets the Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded apart from the DualSense Edge is the fact that it's highly customizable — and I'm not talking about illegally modding it which voids the warranty. Full disclosure: this is the first time I've "modded" a controller — and it couldn't have been easier. In the included case you'll find everything you need to swap the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded's parts. There's a total of 11 interchangeable components: a six-button fightpad module with Kailh microswitches, a reversible D-pad and thumbstick left module, a swappable button and thumbstick right module, swappable thumbsticks and a pair of octagonal stick gates. Again, each offers a different playstyle so it's worth experimenting to find the right fit for you. To swap the parts, you need to use the included screwdriver to unscrew the bolts and then pop your new part in. Easy-as-pie, really. It can be done in under two minutes. I'm not big into fighting games but I gave the fightpad module a spin by playing Mortal Kombat 11. Having six face buttons made quick work of most of the enemies I fought. Because all the buttons are responsive and don't take long to register commands, button mashing was a walk in the park. I've realized now that for fighting games, I much prefer an array of face buttons over triggers and shoulder buttons. Well, this one is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Me? I love how the DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers look. Both look futuristic and sleek, and the rounded and contoured shape provides a natural fit in your hands. I'm a big fan of the two-tone color choice and translucent buttons too. But I also really like how the Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded looks. It's available in either white or black, and both models sport subtle purple RGB lighting. To be honest, the PlayStation model feels like it has adopted the Xbox first-party controller's chunkier grips — and I'm not complaining. It's the one thing I miss from the days I was an Xbox girlie (but don't come at me for saying PlayStation is superior, please). The Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded weighs 9.3oz so it's slightly lighter than the DualSense (9.8oz) but it never feels out of place in my hands, and that's all thanks to the grips with their textured surface providing a sturdy hold. It's the perfect second controller — or for me, my new primary controller (Player One gets priority, them's the rules). As is the nature of my job, I'll be thoroughly testing the Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded and will cover my extensive findings in my full review, so keep an eye out for it. But as I said up top, the controller has made an outstanding first impression on me. It looks great and is ergonomic, and its got the latest Hall Effect tech to back up its gaming prowess. I can't wait to play more of my favorite games to try out how the interchangeable parts behave and whether they help improve my gameplay. The Turtle Beach Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded is now available to pre-order for $209 in the U.S. with shipping expected in late-September, or £179 in the U.K. with shipping expected in late-August.

Ice Cube's Newest Movie ‘War of the Worlds' Receives 0 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes

Among the most interesting storylines around a new movie's release is how critics and fans feel right out of the gate. This is why the interest around early returns from sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are always noteworthy. Unfortunately, for the newest Universal film starring Ice Cube, War of the Worlds, the returns are also not always necessarily a great thing. 'War of the Worlds,' Starring Ice Cube, Earns a 0 Percent Score From Critics While many great stores have debuted on Rotten Tomatoes in recent months, including two superhero films in Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps, it appears critics didn't find much to rave about in Ice Cube's new film. War of the Worlds was officially released on Amazon Prime Video on July 30 and currently holds a 0 percent critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the reviews from fans haven't been much better, as the fan-focused Popcornmeter sits at just 12 percent with over 500 verified reviews. The review site describes the movie's storyline below: "A computer security analyst working for the U.S. government finds his daily life disrupted by an alien attack. Accustomed to dealing with virtual threats, his struggle extends to secrets the government may be hiding." Ice Cube's Big 3 Basketball League Making Unique Move Although Ice Cube's new movie may not be a hit with critics or fans, it's far from all bad for the actor/entrepreneur. The co-founder of the Big 3 basketball league is in the midst of a noteworthy shift that features teams in the league being purchased as the structure shifts to a city-focused approach. As Forbes revealed in 2024, the Big 3 had sold four of its franchises for roughly $10 million each. This led to a new approach in 2025, as the Big 3 revealed on its website previously that there are now eight location-based teams, with hopes to expand that number to 12 in 2026. While Ice Cube is busy with both aspects of his career, as an actor and a businessman, it's fair to assume that he's probably worried about much more than just the reviews of a recent Cube's Newest Movie 'War of the Worlds' Receives 0 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 5, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

From Expedition 33 and Cyberpunk 2077 to F1 22 — these are the 5 games I always play to test gaming headsets

Looking to elevate your gaming experience by making it more immersive? Whether you're on a budget or need a console-specific set of cans, we've ranked the best gaming headsets! I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember, and that's about 15 years. I remember my dad's PC had a demo of the 1997 Tomb Raider with one level where you had to fight it out with a couple of tigers. I'd play it on repeat, thinking it was the greatest thing ever. Video games have come a long way since then, and 2025 has been an outstanding year for consoles and titles so far. Not just that, but we've seen gaming accessories, such as headsets, become better than ever this year. As a reviews writer at Tom's Guide, it's my job to test the best gaming headsets — that means I have an excuse to forego social obligations and play video games (I know, great, isn't it?). You'll usually find me sinking hours into RPGs on my PS5 Slim unless I'm out and about with my camera or at a concert. But how do I even begin testing a gaming headset? It's a long process where I wear a set of cans for hours to determine its comfort level and battery life, and look out for the finest details in sound. To determine whether a headset is a good value for your money, I need to feel like I'm the protagonist as much as possible — I need to be immersed in the game. But with so many games out there, I can't play all of them, but these five titles never let me down. When Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was announced, I knew I had to get the reactive turn-based game, and it took just the 30-minute-long prologue to make it my frontrunner for Game of the Year. In my opinion, it has the best soundtrack of any game I've ever played. Its orchestral power ballads elevate every cutscene, battle and free-roaming experience. You need a capable headset to ensure you appreciate the soundscapes as the developers intended. Because most battles are soundtracked by said power ballads, featuring a plethora of instruments, it's crucial for a good headset to ensure the OST doesn't overpower the battle sounds. There needs to be a perfect balance between the sound of your weapon slashing (or your fireballs burning the enemies, etc.) and the song playing in the background. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless is an extremely comfortable gaming headset thanks to its memory foam ear cups, and it comes with a detailed companion app that offers 200+ game-tailored presets — most of which work excellently. The detachable mic is loud and clear too. Another set of sounds I look out for when playing Expedition 33 to test a set of cans? Audio cues in battles. Some attacks have a sharp ding that plays right before an enemy's attack lands, and this can help you time your parry perfectly to deal massive damage. I've tested a couple of headsets where the ding sounds muffled and muddled with the soundtrack, so if that's what it sounds like, I wouldn't consider it a good set of cans. Headset I recommend for RPG titles: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless (4.5 stars) Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'm not a huge fan of first-person shooters (as I prefer third-person POVs), but Cyberpunk 2077 (and its Phantom Liberty DLC) is the only exception to that rule. It's one of my favorite games, and I've thoroughly enjoyed exploring its various dialogue options and areas. It's also different from most of the RPGs I play, as it emphasizes and rewards stealthy gameplay. Therefore, I need a headset that can help me gauge enemy positions by pinpointing the source of their footsteps when I'm, say, hiding behind a door. Directional audio (where sound travels from one earcup to the other) in a headset is then crucial for this game. Some cans offer the ability to adjust the loudness of footsteps specifically, and these are usually designed for professional eSports players. Designed for professional gamers, the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro boasts fantastic sound with spatial audio support that gives you a competitive edge. It's extremely comfortable, features highly effective ANC, and comes with a detachable mic that makes you sound loud and clear. No compromises have been made, and you're getting your money's worth. For Cyberpunk 2077, you'd want a headset that's an all-rounder. The game is soundtracked by high-tempo techno music that can get very loud and make you feel like you're at a rave. The game's loud tracks can easily overwhelm headsets — in audio terms, imagine if you were listening to a Charli XCX track on a cheap pair of earbuds and it sounded hella tinny with booming bass. That's what you want to avoid, so that's what I look for when playing Cyberpunk 2077. Headset I recommend for FPS titles: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro (5 stars) Horror movies and video games, as is their nature, scare the living daylight out of me, but I can't deny their charm and the rush of adrenaline they provide. Horror games are also great to play when I want to test if a gaming headset can replicate the atmospheric sound design to fully immerse me to the point I feel like I'm the one being terrorized by in-game demons. This is why I always play Alan Wake 2, because what good is a headset if the game doesn't have me at the edge of my seat and my hands shaking? Alan Wake 2 features detailed, intricate sound design, and it utilizes audio cues to build tension and guide the player. This means that if you're using just a flashlight to navigate through the woods at night, you'll hear leaves rustling to alert you of cultists' positions — especially if a headset has great spatial audio. With 50mm drivers and virtual surround sound, the Asus ROG Pelta is a fantastic gaming headset for horror, RPGs and FPS titles. It's extremely comfortable for long gaming sessions, and it's compatible with many devices. Offering a lot of customization potential, you can tailor the sound according to your preferences, too. It's not just subtle, easy-to-miss sounds that make Alan Wake 2 terrifying, but black-and-white jumpscares that pop up every now and then when you're roaming around the world. These are accompanied by screeches or other loud noises that make you flinch. For that reason, the ideal gaming headset needs a wide frequency response range to ensure you hear soft and loud sounds equally as clearly. Headset I recommend for horror games: Asus ROG Pelta (4.5 stars) Racing games can feel extremely immersive, especially if you're using a sim racing rig. If you don't have a sim wheel, you need a great gaming headset at the very least to make you feel like you're the driver behind the wheel. There are two racing games I always play to test a headset: Need for Speed Heat and F1 22. The latter is the better pick because it's extremely easy to slip up and let an opponent overtake you if you drop your guard (and it's what I play to test the best game controllers, too). F1 22 boasts a dynamic soundscape made up of crowds cheering or booing depending on your actions, the sound of the engine depending on your speed and gear, your engineer popping on the radio for advice and strategy, and so on. Sleek, lightweight, and premium-looking, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 is an excellent headset to use with an array of gaming devices. It's extremely comfortable, boasts great sound quality, and the companion app lets you customize your gaming experience further. In F1 22, if an opponent is slowly gaining on me and is in my DRS range, I hear it through my headset if the set of cans is capable. The headset should also be able to tell me exactly when I need to shift gears. To fully immerse myself in the game, I like to hear the roaring of the crowd if I'm leading the race while making my way through Eau Rouge at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Headset I recommend for racing games: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 (5 stars) It blows my mind that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out eight years ago. Its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, is just as good if not better, and is two years old, so why pick the old game? Well, not only has it aged beautifully, but it's still one of my go-to games when I'm testing a headset for the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, thanks to its wide variety of environmental sounds. The reason I chose Breath of the Wild over Tears of the Kingdom is that the former has one thing the latter doesn't: bone-chilling sounds of Guardians locking onto you when you're running through a field, indicated by high-pitched, panic-inducing music. A good gaming headset will ensure I'm feeling the calmest I've ever been while strolling leisurely, enjoying the sound of soft grass under Link's feet, and then have my heart racing as the music dramatically picks up. The Turtle Beach Airlite Fit is a fantastic headset for Nintendo Switch consoles. It elevates your gaming experience by creating immersive soundscapes, thanks to the 40mm drivers. It comes with a flip-to-mute mic that makes you sound loud and clear, and I really like its colorful design, which complements the Switch's playful nature. In line with that, I enjoy using either of the Zelda games when I want to relax and see whether a headset can make me feel at peace. Again, a wide frequency response range helps here as it ensures I hear the delicate sound of drizzling rain as well as the stream's water washing up against my horse's legs as I admire the landscape. Headset I recommend for Nintendo Switch games: Turtle Beach Airlite Fit (4.5 stars) And there you have it! The five games I always play to test sound quality are Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, F1 22 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are other games I sometimes play too, such as Baldur's Gate 3 (the G.O.A.T. by the way), but I've found the five I've talked about the most important in terms of soundscapes.
