Gold award for Jersey Museum exhibit about island

A museum exhibit looking at life in Jersey throughout the years has won an award. Jersey Museum's La Tèrr'rie d'Jèrri - which translates to Being Jersey - received a gold award in the Interior Design Galley category at the Better Future London Design Awards 2025. The exhibit opened in September last year and includes displays of prehistoric mammoth skulls, royal charters and items from 1781's Battle of Jersey between Britain and France and the Nazi occupation during World War Two. Louise Downie, director of curation and experience at Jersey Heritage, who runs the museum in St Helier, said a lot of hard work had gone into setting up the exhibit. Ms Downie added: "The gold award from the London Design Awards is the icing on the cake and is richly deserved by everyone involved in the project." A BRADFORD man who has strived to make his community a "lovely place to live" won an award at the Community Stars 2025 on Tuesday night. Luke Owens won the Good Neighbour of the Year award. The award, sponsored by Incommunities, celebrates people that go above and beyond to do the neighbourly thing in their local community. Luke is a dedicated community leader who always tries to make things better for others. He supports his neighbours and encourages community activities. Every Halloween, Luke hosts an open event in his garden, bringing people together over tea and cake. He also organises outdoor sessions in the local YBS woodland (Deer Woods), where residents engage in woodwork and crafts. The woodland has been transformed into a beautiful community asset, earning the BD5 in Bloom award. Luke participates in litter picks and now chairs the Parkside Together Group, earning respect from everyone in the area. "I couldn't believe it," said Luke. "I was lucky to be nominated. "This is about bringing people together and make the community a lovely place to live. Shahid Islam, who nominated Luke for the award, said: "I nominated him for the good things he is doing, particularly for this woodland. "He shows the true value of doing this kind of work." Speaking after the winning the award, Luke said: ""I was surprised, but it's wonderful to be nominated by a neighbour. "It just shows how special it can be to start to build a community." Anita Dunford and Jill Cook were also nominated for the award. Anita is a volunteer trustee at Ilkley Good Neighbours, supporting older and vulnerable people in her community. Since 2013, she has organised social trips, including drives in the Dales, afternoon teas and Christmas lunches, providing opportunities for those with limited mobility to connect with others. In December 2024, Anita arranged three Christmas lunches for 77 older residents, securing funding to make them free. She also undertakes fundraising efforts, such as a 50 km swim for the charity. Jill is a leader at The Hive in Silsden, transforming it into a vibrant community hub. She ensures inclusivity and provides activities for all ages, fostering connection and well-being. Jill goes beyond her duties as centre manager, volunteering her time to coordinate projects, organise events and lead fundraising efforts. She played a key role in Silsden's first Pride event, promoting inclusivity and community engagement.

‘John Candy: I Like Me' Documentary to Open 2025 Toronto International Film Festival

It may only be June, but the fall film festival picture is starting to come into relief, as today the Toronto International Film Festival has announced its 2025 opening night gala pick: the world premiere of Colin Hanks' documentary 'John Candy: I Like Me.' The Opening Night Gala will take place on Thursday, September 4, at Roy Thomson Hall. The film is billed as 'a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Canadian icon, with stories and memories from Candy's family, closest friends, and longtime collaborators.' 'Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy's humor,' said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF in an official statement. 'We love that John's global career started in Toronto, and we can't wait to share 'John Candy: I Like Me' with everyone at this year's Opening Night Gala premiere. Colin Hanks has made a hugely entertaining film packed with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, but like John, this movie is all heart. For us, it's the perfect way to kick off TIFF's 50th edition.' Chu Warned His 'Wicked: For Good' VFX Team That the Film Will Inevitably Be Memed 'The Ritual' Review: Al Pacino Performs an Exorcism in a Horror Effort Possessed by Mediocrity The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Rogers, runs September 4 – 14, 2025. More festival details will be shared in the coming weeks. Added Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds in their own statement, 'When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up. He wasn't just a great actor; he was an even better person. People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn't know how relatable John really was. He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto.' The film, an Amazon MGM title that will debut globally on Prime Video in the fall, is further described as a way into Candy's 'on- and off-camera existence, featuring never-before-seen home videos, intimate access to his family, and candid recollections from collaborators to paint a bigger picture of one of the brightest stars of the '70s, '80s, and '90s. It's the story of a son, husband, father, friend, and professional driven to bring joy to audiences and loved ones while battling personal ghosts and Hollywood pressures.' The film is Hanks' third feature directing effort, following documentaries on both Tower Records and the band Eagles of Death Metal, which chronicles the events before and after the November 13 terrorist attacks that took place while they were performing at the Bataclan in Paris. Of note: TIFF's Film Reference Library already includes a free John Candy Collection, donated by Rose Candy, containing objects related to Candy's professional career and personal life from the 1970s to the early 1990s.
